A simple attempt at an Oscar grab.
The recipe/formula for this musical... get a director (chef) from a past Oscar winning musical (Chicago), add a few cups of Fellini's 8 1/2 (ala All That Jazz), pour a bowl of Oscar nominated/winning actors in, bake at 350 degrees (media heat) until late fall (Oscar season).
I guess the cake fell.

An expensive flop. Although I was looking forward to the movie with great anticipation, I could have told the Weinsteins it was gonna bomb. The average dopey American doesn't like "that foreign stuff", the musical itself is not generally known, and Daniel Day-Lewis and Nicole Kidman arent' exactly money in the bank (box office wise). Kidman's been poison for years now.

Watched this last night. Overall not an enjoyable experience. A few moments here and there are impressive from a set/costume/choreography perspective. But most of the songs themselves are irritating. Plenty of gorgeous women which is a plus, but DDL's character is off putting. I had no sympathy for him. Film also suffers from being disjointed and boring at times, like just going through the motions. Plot is ordinary and unimaginative. Some of the musical numbers seem like they are thrown in just because "hey we haven't had any music for a while so we need a musical number here." Also all the musical numbers occur in an alternate reality so it's like real time is paused while the song/dance is going on. The songs for the most part didn't advance the story... just added fluff. Odd choice for Daniel Day Lewis. He did fine, but fans of his will most likely be disappointed. Didn't like it.

I didn't care for this when I saw it theatrically, but I'm curious to hear the commentary track, to see if Marshall waxes poetic on this train wreck of a film.
