Going to see this tomorrow for the third time. =) Let no one say I wasn't doing my part for it's box office. I'm mainly going because we just got a new IMAX theater here and I haven't had the chance to see it in IMAX yet.

I think this may seriously be my favorite movie of the year. Can't understand why it's getting slammed. But I think the score may play more a part in making the movie for me than for others. The first Rinzler fight and Light-cycle race are seriously two of the most epic scenes I've seen committed to film.

 Had my 4th screening last night. May just continue seeing it once per week until I've had my fix. :D

This was probably one of the greatest films I've seen in a long time. I'm also surprised at the negative reviews. I found Tron Legacy to be much better and impressive than Avatar, and yet that got very good reviews.

Saw it today. Enjoyed the heck out it and surprised by the negative reviews.

I appreciated the elegance of the filmmaking which is pretty much a lost art these days. The editing was truly "invisible" and all of the scenes had rhythm and flow. Shots and camera moves were actually choreographed/composed with precision! No random grabbing of shots with the floatycam. This was really a great example of classical craftsmanship using modern tools. When hackery from the likes of Chris Nolan receive near universal praise it makes me kinda sad to see the venom directed at this movie. Sometimes I wonder what planet I'm living on...

Anyway I do have some nitpicks. The grid could have been a bit more imaginative, colorful and surreal. There was too much of a "real-world" vibe going on with the smoke and dust and pig dinners and whatnot. The original Tron was almost like an acid trip gone bad. I wanted more of that. Also some more computer references would have been fun and maybe made the grid a bit more relevant. I liked some ideas I read earlier in the thread about firewalls, viruses, etc.

Despite all that, this was the best filmgoing experience of the year by far.

Sorry if some of us require a story and characters that are worth a damn, but I'm glad you enjoyed your laser-light show.

Oh, you're back. Hilarious comment from someone with a Scott Pilgrim avatar.

I love how you only came back to piggyback on someone else's comment. Couldn't formulate a response of your own?

no need to if slop makes a point that I already agree with and find no reason to add more if I didn't need to at that moment.

The film on an audio and visual basis has top notch value, I like that. But...it was pretty damn boring. I didn't care about the story or what propelled to what. The lead character was very boring and the acting was stale.

Seems like you take great offense towards differing opinions for your love of the film. Did I enjoy it? kind of..sort of...Do I think it's a good movie? It's mediocre/competent w/ very well done visual and audio value. It garners no depth of feeling to care about it though. I never felt pulled in by it's "engaging" story. Hell...seems not even Pixar could help them out w/ whatever needed helping out. Heaven forbid it was to fix the story...cuz if that's what Pixar had to do...I could only imagine what was originally there.

Hey, the fact that you, for whatever reason, were not pulled into the story does not mean that, to quote slop"101" "the story and the characters [aren't] worth a damn.". That simply means that you were not pulled into the story, for whatever reason, whether it was an inherent bias against the material or ignorance to the previous movie in the series.

I don't take a "great offense towards differing opinions for your love of the film". What I take a "great offense" to is people like you and slop who don't seem to understand that there is an inherent difference in disliking something simply and disliking something while simultaneously implying that the people who did like it are a bunch of fucking morons.

You didn't like the story, alright. I think the entire Toy Story series, including 3 is overrated crap. I certainly didn't go into the Toy Story 3 thread (even once!) when it was out to proclaim my hatred of the story over an over again as slop and others have seen the need to.

Don't eat dirt. Your mother really should've taught you this.

Why hang around the Tron Legacy thread if you've made it clear numerous times that you didn't like it? Take your dump and move on to greener pastures...

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

The negative comments are especially funny seeing as that I made a Christopher Nolan reference, like he is some kind of bastion of character and story. He and his screenwriters have no interest in people or genuine human behavior, only comic-book (excuse me, graphic novel) pretend profundity and the mathematics of overly complicated plot mechanics.

Which would be OK if he weren't so bad at it. His movies lack artfulness and elegance, which is the real sin IMO.

Tron Legacy might not be game changing in the story or screenplay department (how could it be?) but it is more than competent in that area and the filmmaking (digital capturing?) has actually been constructed with care.

I don't hate the story. I dislike it's inability to be compelling or exciting or whatever it is to pull the audience into it's world. It's....boring.

And to be honest...I hated Tron as a kid...it was boring. I was really keen on this one though....cuz it looked exciting. To believe that one needs knowledge of the first to recognize and accept the 2nd (in whatever form) is ridiculous. A film needs to stand on it's own. It doesn't need the audience to do some backtracking. That's a bad idea, filmmaking wise. It's got to stand on it's own. And this one does stand on it's own....is it better than Tron? No idea....and it doesn't matter if you're just looking at Legacy on it's own and taking it for what it is.

probably cuz it was a game changer in the filmmaking dept. Effects were really good and the technology for it was top design. Storywise...well..it was average. The tools to create it though probably rank it higher that what it is, critically speaking. And that's the magic of Cameron's filmmaking work there. Sadly....it's predictable...but...enjoyable if you don't mind the story that we've all seen.

The thing is I know I will watch both Tron movies again and again but have no interest in seeing Avatar again, regardless of its technical virtuosity. I liked the characters far more and while the Avatar story I found boring the Tron stories I find interesting. Verdammte personal preferences.

I dunno. Personally I don't over-analyze movies like this. I take them for face value for what they are. If I'm entertained then great. I liked Avatar (even though it was very predictable) as well as both Tron films. I'm sure I'll watch all of them again.

I don't want to get caught up in a Tron vs. Inception debate, but if I was mounting a defense for Inception, I definitely wouldn't start with the characters.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

I wasn't coming to the defense of Inception at all (nor did I think it was a debate between these two movies), I was merely pointing out Tron's lack of story and character, two of the most important elements of a narrative which Tron sorely lacks. The debate is between Tron and movies with competent scripts.

Battle Royale has more substance and style than 50 Tron Legacies could.

Christ on a stick, THANK YOU! Some of these "Tron" fans need to get a fucking grip. Look, I loved the first. And I'm one of the few to admit I saw it in the theater. And when I heard a sequel was in the works, I was beside myself. And waited anxiously for the next chapter. And, well, you saw my reaction to "Legacy" here (and a few other threads). Was it the worst movie of 2010? No, not even close. But I was deeply disappointed. And felt no one took the time to write a good script.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

I do think there's been some stupid railing on this movie just for the hell of it, not really from here though. /film had a review up on their site and even though the three people who did not like Tron: Legacy at all, that it was boring, etc were supposedly "fans of the first movie," they asked question of Legacy like "Why did they have a disc on their back" and "what were the discs anyways?"

I definitely did enjoy Tron: Legacy more so than Inception but the fact that the characters were developed previously in a prior installment allows for an easier task than Inception.
