So a program that wants to dominate and control the world because it feels it is smarter and better than humans is more believable than a program designed to seek perfection in an imperfect world?

Not saying MCP and Sark were bad villains, I thought they were great but I thought Clu's reasoning were pretty solid and clear when it was all said and done.

Hell, compare the shot of young Flynn giving that speech in 85-89 about how "in there is our future" and how Clu mirrored that to his rectified programs in saying that their future was out there. Probably even recycled the same CGI effect and replaced Encom with orange/red lights.

He's programed to make the perfect system. He's doing just that with 1989 Flynn's mind set.

Yeah, I get it, I just never felt it was a genuine threat. The MCP is essentially Skynet, who, as we know, is a great villain so long as McG isn't directing.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Yeah, it's never perceived as a threat to the world as opposed to just Kevin Flynn, which is fine on it's own but they never expressed it as much.
Spoiler:
Even the army is just extra people; they can't carry over their weapons to the real world so what is this massive army going to really do?

Had it been something where had CLU gotten out, he would usurp ENCOM and control the world because of how integrated ENCOM is in everyday life, that would be a better threat. Use the army/re-programmed bits to show how daunting the task would have been for Sam/Quorra/Kevin to deal with, showing off how Sam is ready to take charge of the company because he can exploit the mainframe's weakness aka chosen one, and then keep the finale as is.

One thing I didn't mind, which people are complaining about, is why the movie didn't deal with the internet because the logical step to the next movie is that people in the real world will want to enter the Grid because of what it means in regards to disease/lifespans and the endless potential in manipulation of the Grid.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Well, they may very well be able to take their weapons. They digitized pants, jackets, boots and what not with flynn. So maybe they'll materialize their weapons.. then again, hitting people with a disc or poking them with a rainbow prod may not have the effect. But man, the overwhelming force.

I'm glad they didn't do anything with the internet. I would have hated to see the self referencing facebook, youtube and any other website. Keeping it that Flynn wasn't alive all this time on the information super highway and just on one server was nice.

Yup, completely agree and it served to point to the "fact" that however advanced the outside world became 27 years later, it couldn't hold a candle to the Grid.

So I just watched the first Tron for the first time last night... and maybe it's because I didn't see it originally 28 years ago and so I don't have that nostalgic feeling toward it, but it was cheesy as hell. The idea of the movie was awesome, but executed very poorly (and no, not just because of the ancient visual effects). Felt like a 1980's version of Metropolis... which wouldn't be a bad thing if it wasn't so goofy. I guess you really had to grow up with it to appreciate it.

That being said, should I even bother with this second one? Again, I really dig the idea of the movie, but if the new one is just as silly as the first, I don't want to waste two hours.

No, don't watch it.

Metropolis is an apt comparison. Both films are lovingly constructed hand wrought masterpieces created by skilled craftsman using methods that amount to a lost art. The sights (and in Tron's case sounds) on show have a texture and look that is truely lightening in a bottle. That you (and many others) failed to see this is sad.

I would say that Legacy is not cheesy, maybe Sheen's character is but not the whole movie.

"Oh dear god no!"

I think Legacy has less cheese then the original.

You're making a mistake if you're avoiding this one solely because you didn't care for the original.

Yes, there are some cheesy parts (when the babes dress Flynn, for instance...and most of the club sequence...which I really dug), BUT, there's also Olivia Wilde, a bad-ass, what-Snake-Eyes-should-have been Tron, a killer soundtrack, some pretty spectacular action sequences (highlight: the light cycles), and a fun Jeff Bridges.

So, A LOT of improvements on the original.

Sound and visuals were impressive enough to overshadow lackluster, exposition heavy story. The Daft Punk score is really breathtaking.

So lemme get this straight. Great visual, great score, and a shitty script? Sounds like the original. I'll check it out.

The first had a great score (!?)

Tron is running strong here in the city. Last night I tried to buy tickets to an IMAX 3D showing and it was sold out. Pissed me off with the hassle of driving and being stuck in downtown traffic.

Well I did see the new one today (along with a double dose of Jeff Bridges in True Grit) and must say I did enjoy this better than the original.

Again, I can completely understand the love for it, but I think you had to of grown up with it to really appreciate it, and not watch it for the first time 28 years after it was made.

There was some cheese in this flick, but not nearly as much goofiness as the original.

Hell yeah, Wendy Carlos (formerly Walter Carlos, who scored A Clockwork Orange).

Wait, Disney employed a tranny to score a movie of their's in 1982!? Edgy!

Truth be told, I haven't seen the original "Tron" in years. I need to watch it again.

I was never crazy about the original but thought Legacy was a total blast.

Great movie. It just flew by. I liked th Oz like flat start and end. The score was great. I saw it in imax 3d and it looked and sounded great. It was not dark like most 3d movies. I will be seeing this again in the theater. It was a fitting sequel to the original whick I also liked very much.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Anyone else find it amusing/odd that once again, for a film titled Tron, the title character hardly factors at all in his own movie? I mean sure he defeated the MCP in '82 film but Bridges is still clearly the main star, protagonist, lead character, POV in both movies. "Rinzler" looked awesome in the sequel but they missed a HUGE opportunity at the end when they could have revealed Boxleitner's face right when he thwarts Clu and is taken out.

This series seriously needs someone remotely resembling a competent writer/storyteller working on it.

You're awfully defensive about anything regarding the original Tron.
