Saw the midnight and enjoyed it. Fantastic visuals, and I need to get the soundtrack. Saw it in 3D, but I think I will do 2D on my next viewing.

I fucking loved it!!!!!

Had no issue with Hedlund and I thought Oliva Wilde was great.

Definitely wanted more Michael Sheen. The man is simply brilliant in anything that he is casted in.

Music + Action Sequences = Sensory Orgy for me :D

I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't perfect, but other than a few spots that dragged a bit, I thought it was entertaining. As others have already mentioned, I thought Sheen and Wilde both did a terrific job.

I was surprised that Rinzler turned out to be
Spoiler:
Tron.

I had a feeling it would wind up being
Spoiler:
Cillian Murphy since he played Dillinger's son.

OMG!

That was one of the best movie experiences I've ever had. I fucking loved it. Daft Punk...incredible.

Fucking fantastic. The music almost overpowered the visuals a times it was so good. But the visuals...god. I don't understand how anyone could not like it. I don't want to know those people.

Save for the fanboys, this movie is being trashed for the same reason the original was. Great visuals, idiotic story.

Caught an IMAX 3D presentation this morning, loved it! I don't see what people's issues are...

Quick question at the end...

Spoiler:
Maybe i'm remembering it wrong, but doesn't Sam flip the power off as he's walking out of Flynn's arcade? I was totally expecting to see the arcades or the sign or something power down, but nothing did. Did I miss something, or am I remembering it wrong?

IIRC, I believe he was actually turning the outside sign on.

Count me in the minority, but I loved the ever-loving shit out of this.

I've never been that much of a fan of the original Tron. Saw it when I was a child, purchased the two-disc DVD from Deep Discount DVD when it came out and never touched it until a few days ago in which I re-visited it before watching Legacy. It didn't hold up or even have the nostalgia factor that other films from that time frame (like Disney's The Black Hole) have for me. Needless to say, I just sold my copy on eBay for $50.

Yes, I get that it set the stage for visual effects in films to come; still doesn't mean it's a good movie.

However, I felt this was a great tribute/reboot/sequel to that of the original film. I don't know how easily accessible this is to those who never watched the original film (it doesn't really go to much depth to explain that of the original and few will get the sly reference to Dillinger's son and said cameo), but my girlfriend and I both came out thinking it was awesome.

I can go on and on about how great the visuals, the Daft Punk score, Jeff Bridges, and Olivia Wilde were. I can also go on and on about how terrible of an actor Garrett Hedlund is and how creepy motion-capture Jeff Bridges look. However, I felt that's been already done to death by the detractors in this thread.

What I will talk about is the IMAX 3D presentation which I thought was mixed. I saw it in 70mm over that of digital for a few reasons:

1. Closer to my girlfriend's house.
2. Cheaper than the fake-IMAX screens.

However, while the scenes that switched to the 1.7:1 aspect ratio looked simply better than that in 2.40:1; I feel that the 3D effect didn't work as I noticed a lot of ghosting throughout the picture. Now I don't know if this is an effect due to the DMR process or just the theater in general, but I thought the 3D in the Born to Be Wild trailer before the picture was more immersive than that of Tron. I'm curious to how the 3D looks in that of the fake-IMAX presentations or even a Real-D setup.

This is interesting, because I was considering seeing it at the newly revamped Seattle Cinerama...hmmm.

I cannot fathom people loving this and hating the original Tron. I guess because this is a big slick movie or something.

I was born three years after the original one came out. There's other films from that era I still love, but the original just didn't hold up for me.

I watched the original on DVD earlier this year and I still enjoyed it. After reading some of the reviews here, I've decided to go see it with my younger brother next Wednesday. If "Legacy" is like the original with better visuals and audio...then I'll be very happy.

I will go in with low expectations though. There have been so many major crapfest Sci-Fi, fantasy, and super hero movies the past few years...I don't want to be let down again.

FWIW...I was 4 when the original was released.

33 next week...son of a....

Well you come off as older good sir. :p

I remember watching the original on the Disney Channel when I was younger, back when the channel was legit and showed movies like Gremlins and The Poseidon Adventure uncut (yeah). I remember liking it then, but it just didn't hold up when I re-watched it this past week.

It's a very disjointed film. There are some moments that do actually hold up such as the light cycle race (which I actually prefer compared to the sequel's attempt), but the film hinges on cringe inducing at times mostly due to what seems like a weak script. I get that it's a Disney product of the late 70s/early 80s, but they produced other films during that era that still maintained their "adult" and "dark" tones despite their attempt at making it kid-friendly (The Black Hole, The Watcher in the Woods and Something Wicked This Way Comes are all good examples as films that hold up).

Yes, it's a product of it's times; but in my opinion, just doesn't have the longevity factor to go with it.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

For me, the awkwardness helps sell the wide-eyed idealism that the movie espouses. The sequel doesn't have the benefit of that.

The movie could have been in 2D and have had the same effect, imo. The only reason I suggest people see it in IMAX in my review is for the opening up of the aspect ratio.

And Born To Be Wild has some of the most impressive 3D I've ever seen.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Caught this this afternoon in IMAX 3D. This is the first IMAX movie I've seen in a long while and the first modern 3D movie I've ever seen. I liked the original Tron but I really dug this one. The plot is a bit convoluted sure but visually it's great (the 3D isn't overkill at all and is just right), the soundtrack is great, and hey anything with Jeff Bridges is usually OK by me.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Saw it today in the 3D IMAX as well. Soundtrack really worked well. Visuals are pretty sweet as others have said. I thought the acting was solid also, with a decent little story.

Something I didn't care for:

Spoiler:
Having Tron still alive as a bad guy and then suddenly turning back to good and save them Han Solo style because he does what's best for the users. I get it, but it just felt like they shoehorned him in there, it didn't really seem fit.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Just got back from seeing it, here's my quick take.

TRON LEGACY suffers from the opposite issues that plagued TRON. Instead of being too silly at times, it's way too serious; instead of being fairly brief, it's a tad too long.

A visually pleasing movie with a piece of wood for a lead (Olivia Wilde is the real star, IMO) and can't decide whether it wants to be a fantasy tale or some misguided allegory (like the original).

Still, I had fun and give it a solid "B" (or 3.0/5.0)

In comparison, I'd give the original a "B+" (3.5/4.0) which I just watched the other day. The original had a sense of wonder that the sequel never managed to recapture. The only way the sequel would have had a chance of doing that, is if the trailer showed absolutely nothing of the new GRID.

Loved the visuals/3D, loved the music - was bored to tears for the last hour. Really was expecting more... maybe I was too hyped for it. I was fighting to stay away at a 1pm showing which is never a good sign. I had no connection to the characters (other than Bridges) and things just seemed to happen for no real reason. Maybe I'll see it again sometime and warm up to it, but it just felt very hollow and meaningless - pretty but dumb.

I believe that Born to Be Wild was filmed with actual IMAX 3D cameras (70mm), so naturally an original 70mm image would look much better blown up then a 1080p image up-rezed to 2K and then up-rezed again for the IMAX print.

True, but I saw Avatar in both 70mm IMAX and fake-IMAX and I thought it looked impressive.
