Just saw this in the theaters - it only came out two weeks ago here. I liked it a lot. I didn't have very high expectations, thanks to the trailer, but ended up enjoying it a lot. I double-billed it with Knocked Up, and I think this was actually the better of the two.

My question is: who stole Claire Danes eyebrows?

The movie continues to do well overseas. Despite not being a huge success in the US, it has made 112 million worldwide so far, and isn't slowing down at the time being.

I noticed the same thing. It's doing really well in the U.K. It should have done at LEAST 100 million in the U.S. What the hell happened??

Word of mouth.

I really wanted to like this movie and it was pretty lame. I wanted to shoot myself the entire time that De Niro was prancing around.

Lack of advertising. 75% positive at Rotten Tomatoes and 8.1 on imdb seems indicate that most people that did see the movie enjoyed it. I mentioned it to a number of people, and none of them ever heard of it.

that's what happens when you make your movie with way too much money.

What? Make a good movie?

I can understand that it might not resonate with everyone but it definately hit the mark for me.

It went way over budget, close to $200m. There was no way this movie was ever going to make that back. And sorry, it wasn't that entertaining. It was very bland fantasy.

I really doubt this went over budget that much...
It probably needs to make around $150 million to cover all production and marketing costs and be in the green which it should have no trouble doing during its international theatrical run.
Also i can easily see this being a big seller and renter. Both during the holidays here in the US and in the long run.

All sources say this was a moderately budgeted flick and it stayed in that realm, where did you get $200m from?

Everything I read says 70 million. I honestly just don't believe the 200 million figure.

"Three other films that opened over the weekend were outright flops. Paramount's Stardust, which reportedly soared way over budget to close to $200 million, earned just $9.2 million."

IMDB news is basically tabloid stuff, i've seen them make mistakes before.. I haven't heard the 200 million figure anywhere else.

The movie's IMDB page lists 65 million as the budget and at Box Office Mojo they list it at 70 million.

Regardless, $70m was too much.

Not if it turns a profit. According to Box Office Mojo it has pulled in $113,189,864 worldwide, throw in DVD sales I'm sure the studio is going to make a profit, so the Studio probably would disagree with you.

Hey, profit's fine. Just think of what they could've made if it was a better movie.

Being a good film has little to do with boxoffice success. It's all about marketing.
