Looks really interesting and a good cast!

Based on some book or original?

PopcornTreeCt 03-23-07 10:21 PM

Very cool to see a movie based on a Gaiman book. And Matthew Vaughn gets props for Layer Cake.

less Action Comics and more Vertigo titles for you, mister Superman07 because this is a good book.

It was a rather decent port over from the book. Sure, they had to drop a lot and it would have been nice to have Tori voice the tree but I have to say that watching a test screening of this sometime back with limited FX shots, it was a well done film. I enjoyed it a great deal and a lot of folks will relate it to a sort of Princess Bride level when it comes out.

chris_sc77 03-24-07 10:07 AM

Anyone know why Tori Amos is not going to be voicing the tree?...
That would have been a real treat..

Just finishing up the book today...it is such a great little novel and i hope the film does it justice which it looks like it will...

Supermallet 03-24-07 01:29 PM

Man, what a cast.

Artman 03-24-07 01:37 PM

Looks like pretty good light fantasy, would it be comparable to something like Princess Bride?

cause the tree part was cut out. ;)

Ladies and gentlemen, I have to say this is going to be THE biggest flop of 2007. The trailer was terrible looking and got 0 audience response when I saw it.

The cast... it looks great. And when I looked the movie up on IMDB I saw it was based on a Neil Gaiman book. Damn it. I like Neil Gaiman.

I just have a bad feeling about this. :(

chris_sc77 05-17-07 10:27 PM

Hopefully they will program the trailer on Shrek 3 and Harry Potter 5 and Pirates 3....
I dont know how it could bomb it advertised with those films...

Dash 05-18-07 02:22 AM

It looked good to me and I wil see it, but I dont think it will do to well in theaters

Jackskeleton 05-18-07 03:38 AM

I dunno. It may play well to some of the crowd. I think it will grow a following ala Princess Bride. So it may not be all that huge box office wise, but it'll be followed fairly well.

It's a shame people won't open their minds to something new, but are more than willing to have their brain cells systematically killed by seeing the new Shrek movie (also, as I type this, a review for The War At Home is sitting on top of the page. Talk about another brain cell murderer).

Numanoid 05-18-07 11:47 AM

There's really no point in seeing the movie if you've seen the trailer. They pretty much cover the ENTIRE storyline. -ohbfrank-

fryinpan1 06-10-07 09:01 AM

I had never heard of this movie until I saw a display at the theater yesterday. I came home and watched the trailer and I think that it could be good. I will probably get the book at some point too.

Ginwen 08-02-07 01:41 PM

The trailer looks cheesy, but I liked the book a lot so I'll see it.

Oh, but it looks so much fun though. I went down the shop and picked up some Neil Gaiman just to get me in the mood. Looking forward to it.

Elpresidentepez 08-03-07 01:56 AM

I went to the free screening at San Diego Comic-Con. I was only mildly interested in seeing it. I'll agree that the trailers look awful. I had not read the book. in fact i have very little experience with Gaiman's writing, I'm only on the 2nd trade of Sandman. The film was introduced by Gaiman and the screenwriter with a Q & A afterwards.

I thought the movie was fantastic. I described the film to a friend as "Unironically magical." The only movie I can possibly compare it to is Princess Bride (not my thought, Gaiman mentioned it during the Q & A). It has that aura of whimsy and romance that so few films have. The cast is amazing. Pfeiffer and De Niro steal the show, with Danes and newcomer Charlie Cox holding their own. I have a feeling this movie will have the fate of Princess Bride and others and be more of a cult hit, but it deserves so much more.

animatedude 08-03-07 05:55 AM

this movie has a big fuckin' "FLOP" and "MEH" all over it...still..it's getting good reviews so far, though.

mlemmond 08-03-07 08:59 AM

The book was great and if the movie captures even a small part of the magic of the book it will be good.

starseed1981 08-03-07 09:03 AM

I'm gonna catch this since I'm a fan of the book. But I have a feeling the movie is gonna flop terribly....just because of it's name. They should've changed it, it sounds like a "My Little Pony" biopic.

Wolf359 08-03-07 10:08 AM

I agree it looks like it'll flop, can't say why for sure....
I'll still see it for myself though.

Does DeNiro take every single offer for roles? Seems like he has been in a lot of trash the last several years.

I was quite shocked by the early praise as well. The trailer borders on painful....

Jackskeleton 08-03-07 02:22 PM

It's a good film. I liked it a lot. But the marketing will be the downfall of the film.

starseed1981 08-03-07 02:37 PM

I just saw the theatrical trailer and yeah, the above poster was right. They pretty much give away every single plot point in the movie.

Josh-da-man 08-03-07 02:46 PM

Agreed that the marketing blows. The TV spots I've seen are really weak. If I didn't already know what it was, I'd have zero interest in it.

I'm also surprised that they aren't using Neil Gaiman's name to push the film. He's not only the biggest name in comic books, but he's also a best-selling novelist as well. I know more than a few people who read his novels who have never even heard of Sandman.
