I didn't immediately think about My Little Pony. I thought of Ziggy Stardust, which made me want to see it just on general principle. After seeing the trailer and learning that this is a Gaiman story, my interest was piqued 1000 fold.

I love this sort of movie.

It's not as bad as a bad Gilliam fantasy movie, but it's not better than a good fantasy movie (Lord of the Rings). It's about as enjoyable as Chronicles of Narnia, which I thought was just OK. There's a lot of great moments (DeNiro, in my opinion, steals the show) but the story is so basic and the score is so irritating (as if it's done by a marching band on parade) that I had a hard time being engrossed by it. The CGI effects may be cheap, but they don't look it; you won't confuse this for a TV movie. At least, if you have some kids dragging you to see this, you'll like it.

You should see this film, certainly, but there's at least a dozen better films this year, many of which might still be playing and it would be remiss for me to recommend this for immediate theatrical viewing. The audience I was with seemed to like it a bit more than me, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I found DeNiro's performance cringe inducing.

After reading this thread I decided to give the book a shot. I really liked the book and found the pacing well done. Having seen the trailers for the movie I had to wonder if I missed something in the book what with all of the sword fighting they show in the trailer. I don't recall the protagonist even touching a sword in the book. All of that aside, I will be seeing the movie and I hope I will like it. It has great potential. But I think they may have miscast Clair Danes. I would have gone for a more "innocent" woman.

10 years ago, the role that Claire Danes played would have probably gone to Gwyneth Paltrow.

I didn't even recognize that as Claire Danes. I guess it's a mix of her having long blonde hair as well as not being in anything really noteworthy in years.

"The Hours" (2002), "Igby Goes Down" (2002), "Shopgirl" (2005). All great performances IMO.

Noteworthy or side-noteworthy?

Loved Stardust. I actually came away liking it a little better than Princess Bride - but that might just be because it's still fresh in my mind. Have to see if it stands up as well after some time. Still - far and away the best movie I've seen so far this summer.

Well, most of those movies are probably unknown by the general populace with maybe the exception of The Hours. Igby and Shopgirl were all limited releases.

Todd: I liked Stardust more than The Princess Bride, but I didn't like The Princess Bride too much. I nearly fell asleep.

Not sure what side-noteworthy is. How about sponge worthy?

To the Bus: Yeah, I know "Shopgirl" and "Igby" weren't high profile films. I'm talking about the notice she got for her performances. Meaning, positive reviews for her performance.

If noteworthy=widely known, how about The Family Stone then. Not a good movie, but known by the general populace, or since the other poster went back to 2002, Terminator 3 in 2003.

...anyway on the topic of Stardust, good movie. Not as good as the book or as Princess Bride, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

just saw it yesterday and thought it was a really well done adaptation of the book.

Now we just need gaiman to make Sandman and American Gods.

Personally, I think Sandman would work best as an episodic animated series done for HBO or Showtime.

American Gods would make a good HBO mini series.

Just got back and wow, its probably one of the best movies I seen this year and in a while. I LOVED it, 9.5/10 Never read the book or even heard of it but wow. The story was fantastic, great way how everyone came together etc. Loved the score too. The visuals were okay. but great characters, this is a movie with a lot of heart. I thought DeNiro was great. The pacing was excellent, Claire Danes was great in this too. This movie is a classic. Hope Word of mouth spreads, this is a great movie and deserves to do better at the Box Office. I thought this was leagues about The Princess Bride.

It could also be a mix of live-action and animation. (The "earthly" parts could be live-action, while the parts taking place within the Dreaming or Hell could be animated. It might be tricky to pull off, but not impossible.)

I like that, except I cannot possibly imagine who would play Morpheus in real life.

Yea, I agree Maingon, I enjoyed the movie and am tempted to go watch Stardust again on the screen. I was at Barnes & Noble the other day and noticed there was a Stardust visual companion guide. I immediately purchased it, lots of concept art and ideas that were either cut or not film at all, plus the script is in it also. A good buy if you can get a deal, I had a 20% coupon plus a 10% membership off so it was a buy for me.

I am still waiting for the soundtrack, I really hope this weekend Stardust would stay in the top 5.
