Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!

I just wished they continued on track with Singer. Did he not want to make a 2nd film or was it the studio?

Returns was an excellent, well-crafted film. It could have used more action, but I was expecting that in the sequel.

I'm sorry but...people want some entertaining action for their Superhero films...that and a good story. That film had a airplane rescue sequence and that was it. The plot was boring and mediocre. The film went nowhere. Also...Lex isn't the Lex that people want now. That was the Lex that Hackman was cuz of that timeframe. Bosworth was incorrectly cast as Lane.

Iron Man had little action...but it had a damn fine actor with a good story that propelled Scene A to B to etc etc very very well. Routh was fine as Supes..but he never talked. the Kent used in Returns is the Kent of old. Not the Kent of now...which is the better no BS Kent. He's a man and he's damn good at his job who doesn't act like a fool.

Singer was SO wrong for the job, it wasn't even funny. He brazenly admitted how his only exposure to Superman the character was through the Richard Donner films, and that was why he spent $200 million simply rehashing those movies. Almost every thing in that movie was wrong: the pacing, the casting, the story (a Lex Luthor land scheme! WOW! NEVER seen that before!), the kid, the Super-Stalker, the glum, muted color scheme, the lack of action... well other than all that, it was superb!!

Singer didn't understand the character or the universe. He only knew the 1978 and 1981 movies, and just regurgitated that back onscreen.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!

Director Zach Snyder tells Digital Spy no decision has been made in regards to the film's 3D prospects. "I don't know for sure, I can't say for sure but I will say that the experience of the 3D in 'Guardians' was so successful for what I wanted it to do. I think that 3D is pretty awesome if it's done as part of the cinematic language as opposed to being a gimmick," he says. In the past, he's mentioned a post-conversion of "300" impressed him, but he's still unsure of using an actual 3D camera in a live action setting.

Meanwhile, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the legal fight for the character has been delayed by the judge over some lawyer shenanigans. As I understand it, this sort of thing goes on everyday, but we never here about it because "Superman" isn't involved in those other cases. Lastly, various sites are pointing to this Comic Book Movie scan of a "News of the World" article claiming Brandon Routh still has a shot at the part, but as Ain't It Cool News points out, they've been wrong about casting before.

Yeah, 60+ pages worth.

I know i'm in the minority for really liking Returns. I guess I just had no idea Singer knew so little about Superman. The film looked great though. ha...

Correct. I liked it initially, but as time went forward and many FX showings later, I found the film to be flawed. I remember when I saw it with a woman I was dating and they had the scene of Superman crash landing she leaned over and said: "We've already seen this stuff." While it wasn't the infant storyline she might have been expecting, she definitely had a point.

What's sad is how they really had a great opportunity to do so much. After the prologue, it's established Supes has been around for a while, and has probably vanquished several foes. The video game took this concept and ran with it. You saw Bizarro, Metallo, and Mongul. They could have taken this route, but didn't.

What a ridiculous thing to do in a movie that was meant to be a sequel to those films.

And for all that we can thank WB for making sure the final X men movie was also awful and terrible.

Making sequels to two movies made 30 years ago and rehashing the same exact scheme from the first from a director who had no understanding of the property whatsoever? I got your ridiculous and raise ya a heapin' stack of buh-wha?!

40 pages or 60, its pretty long. Maybe now that a solid choice has been made for director we can get a new thread for the movie?

Agreed. We also have a release year, since WB is under the gun.

I liked the idea of making a sequel to Superman II, ignoring 3 & 4. Execution... not so much.

Yep. Well, except for the cool bank-robbery scene; and the cool Metropolis Mayhem portion (with the firey gas pipe, super breath, flying upside-down and zapping debris with laservision, catching the Daily Planet globe, etc.); the thrilling lifting-of-the-boat rescue; the way-cool recharging and triumphantly slamming into the ocean floor followed by the lifting of New Krypton scene; the touching falling-back-to-Earth "death" scene; the wonderful and exciting soundtrack (including the new themes); etc. Other than that, yeah, a bleh movie.

But I guess people can always watch Iron Man 2 again, which lacked any inspiring, touching, or thrilling moments, IMO.
