Superman 1: okay, this is pretty solid, but the real estate plot?...Entertaining and respectable film.
Superman 2: real estate again, only this time with Zod and co... Entertaining yet cheesy film.
Superman 3: Richard Pryor comedy? Some tv actor villain Luthor substitute? Was Superman in this film? Only great scene was Superman vs. Evil Superman...Awful film.
Superman 4: Solar Man? I don't remember Superman in this film as well...I don't remember anything about this film except it being awful.
Superman 5: boring, stalker-zombie-Bizarro Superman. Superboy? Should have been Krypto instead. Worst superhero climactic fight - a Kryptonite knife and a beatdown from Kumar? What is this film - the Warriors? Long, boring, and awful film.
Zach Snyder's Superman: probably visually amazing, great action scenes, interesting characters with good writing (Goyer shines as a writer, not as a director), a Superman that won't be a biotch as he usually is in all his other movies and cartoons, and entertaining from beginning to end. This time, I hope the movie is long.
I'm not crazy about Jon Hamm - he's a bit too TV actorish for my taste, but if Snyder used him, I'm sure it would turn out fine.

If Snyder uses Zod, there are other famous characters that have been used in the comic book storylines involving Zod, which means the movie could also have:
1. Bizarro
2. Brainiac
3. Metallo
4. Parasite
And that would be an awesome film! Maybe with even a hint of Darkseid at the end of the film!

I'd prefer Brainiac. Bizarro is an iffy premise...yet somehow I can see Snyder make that one work.
Actually....fuck that. I can see all of them working under Snyder. For some reason...he's good at making the absurdness of a character not corny or weird. Fuck...maybe he is perfect for this.

Zod again??? Didn't I say I wanted something new? Oh well, if they must do Zod I recommend:
Ralph Fiennes-my first choice
Daniel Day-Lewis-won't happen, but if you want him to seem like a credible threat...
Alexander Skarsgard-may be a bit young, but could work
Ian McShane-would love this as well
If you want an all-star cast :
Daniel Day-Lews as Zod, Angelina Jolie as Ursa/Zod's female sidekick should they re-name, Brock Lesnar as the speechless Non/whatever they decide to name him. If Lesnar plays in it, then give him NO DIALOGUE whatsoever.
If you want to keep the Mad Men cast involved, then perhaps Christina Hendricks could play the Ursa role.

Well even by accident it's guaranteed to be better than Singer's Superman Returns. Which was a turgid, stillborn hunk of shat.

Anyhow, while it probably won't happen, I just hope they bring back Brandon Routh.

Now I'm not proclaiming Zack Snyder as a genius or anything either but he hasn't made as many movies yet and two of the three I've seen were entertaining. 300 is honestly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but I loved his version of Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen was damn good as well. I think he can do something interesting with the Superman character and with Nolan and co. writing the script this movie should turn out good.

I'm on board with Zack. I hate Routh is getting shafted though. I hope he continues to have a great career.
I think we need a new thread/title now

Uggh, Snyder is one of the few directors I simply don't like. He has no concept of direction past the visual style level, and even that is getting tired.

Agree completely with this, though I'd much rather see a villain we haven't seen on the big screen already (like Brainiac) than a re-hashing of Superman 2. Here's hoping the story is at least original.
And I'm okay with Snyder. I thought he did a good job with Watchmen.

I don't know why people are walking around with a stiffy for Routh. He was decent in the role but it was hardly a standout performance. This had more to do with the material than his abilities, but nonetheless the end result didn't exactly lend one to believe that he was in any way superlative.
I liked him in the role, I just wish Singer and Co. had decided to give him any memorable lines. They barely let him speak at all.
And remember: just because Zod is the "villain" doesn't mean that there aren't other characters / "villains" in the movie. Zod = Krypton, ergo we could have Brainiac or even Doomsday as well. Possibly even gro

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
I was hoping Aronofsky was going to get the nod to direct the next Superman film.
For those who have seen "The Social Network", would Armie Hammer (played the Winklevoss twins) make a suitable candidate to don the red cape? He's 6'5" talle, with a solid build (packing on the muscles shouldn't be a problem), dye his hair black, with a square jaw, he's got the look of the classical hero.
I just don't know if he could also play the gentle, charming, vulnerable side of Superman (Christopher Reeve was rather good in his portrayal during his first rooftop interview with Lois in the first Superman film).
