Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
Well maybe this can light a fire. From CBR:
Warner Bros has won a major battle in its conflict with the estate of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, according to Variety.
The article mentions two interesting things in relationship to the long inert sequel to "Superman Returns." Alan Horn, Warner Bros. Chairman, testified, according to the article, "that the property wasn't under development at the studio, that no script had been written and that the earliest another 'Superman' pic could be released would be in 2012."
Which could be good news for the Siegel Estate. "The Court pointedly ruled that if Warner Bros. does not start production on another Superman film by 2011, the Siegels will be able to sue to recover their damages," says their lawyer, Marc Toberoff

Hard to believe that we already have sequels to THE PUNISHER, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, HULK and DAREDEVIL (well, sorta if you consider ELEKTRA) yet nothing has moved on SUPERMAN.
Just make the damn sequel, WB! You have your actor. You have a director willing to go WRATH OF KHAN on it. Just do it, damnit.
(Hard to believe it takes a lawsuit to get them back on track...)

MAN OF STEEL
While Brandon Routh's contract has expired. The same is not necessarily true for Lex Luthor Kevin Spacey. He tells MTV Splash Page, "They have me."

I don't mind Lex being in a Superman film but...not most of the films need him. Use him if you have a story worth telling...not cuz he's a mainstay villain.

I hope they renew Routh's contract. He really looks the part these days and he was one of the better aspects of Superman Returns.
I wouldn't mind Spacey back as long as they don't have him make a poor Hackman impersonation again and if Lex is reduced to a behind-the-scenes type of villain. I'd like to see him have a hand in getting the ball rolling but not necessarily be the main threat.

SUPERMAN BEGINS?
I'm laying the old "Man of Steel" title to rest if IESB is anywhere near the mark. According to them, the property has a lot of traction at Warner Bros, but Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" is being looked at as the end of the series initiated in 1979, with a new series beginning with the upcoming production. "Man of Steel" was the title being used for a potential "Returns" sequel. "The next films will be a completely new take on the character and the story," says IESB's Robert Sanchez. He also suggests the Wachowski Brothers are at the top of the list to receive the prized franchise.

Just keep Routh and the Theme Music.

Wow, IESB regurgitating the same old recycled rumors yet again (Wachowski brothers! Reboot! New take!!) that we've heard a thousand times over. If anyone ever lists IESB as a source, file it as COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT immediately.

Actually, I hope they dump the music. Yes, it's an iconic theme but it carries the baggage of the '79 movie and its sequels. If they do a reboot, let it have its own look and sound.
But keep Routh. Superman Returns should have been a reboot anyway. Not a love letter to the '79 movie.

I agree, Routh definitely should return. Here he is playing soccer the other day:

He has bulked up a lot in the past three years.
And I love the theme, but I can understand the reasoning behind getting a new one.

Sometimes a second outing of a reboot proves more popular. Dark Knight anyone?
Superman Returns was good on the big screen and IMAX, but after a while you realize it's more or less the same damn movie that was released in 1978. I felt that when the movie did its little prologue scroll, that freed it to do anything it wanted without a need for explanation, kind of like the video game version of the movie. Instead we just got a retread with the added annoyance of a superkid. In short, do something new!

Damn. He's built.
It's too bad Warner Bros. is most likely like any other studio and doesn't accept unsolicited scripts. There's one I've been working off and on for a while as a sort of writer's block excercise. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback for it (amidst some negative - the best kind - which I gladly used to imrpove it) and sometimes daydream of how cool it'd be to get to sell it.
Heck, reading a lot of posts from people in this and other threads on this site, I think plenty here could deliver some solid stories and or scripts of their own.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
I would love for the Wachsowski's to be involved, I don't think there is anyone else more suited for making it.
The final fight in Matrix Revolutions proves they could make the kind of action that a Superman movie begs for
And the earnestness of Speed Racer makes me think they would perfectly nail the tone of Superman, rather than make it some grimdark reboot or another nostalgia trip.
