Don't know if you guys heard this yet, but it looks like this might be going direct-to-DVD so that Romero doesn't have to deal with studios. You can read more about it here...http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_6435.html

God I hope there is no CG gore. That was a real slap in the face in LOTD.

Since I see 99% of new movies first on DVD, that's fine by me. Let him make an unrated film and release it the way he wants it.

Also from the link
Another project revealed during the interview sounds like our intial scoop several months ago "Zombisodes". At that point we had no clue what it could be about but today it was revealed to be a project for cell phones. Here is what Romero had to say about it.

"It's a comedy. It's gonna be like the Road Runner and the Coyote cartoons. It's one zombie and one victim. This zombie keeps trying to nail this woman, and everything backfires on him. He just keeps getting fucked over. And of course zombies don't die so if he gets flattened by a boulder, he'll remain flat!"
For some reason, this sounds entertaining.

At Dragon*Con early in September, Romero was asked about this project and he said it was something he wrote years ago when trying to get something - anything - made to continue the Dead series. He really didn't seem like he liked the project, though, given that his more ideal way of continuing the series, Land of the Dead, eventually came through.

(And on a side note, he was also asked about the Dawn of the Dead remake and he said he didn't think it was an actual zombie movie due to the running zombies, and was instead really just an action movie.)

Hmmm...seems like someone has beaten George to the punch: The Zombie Diaries.

SYNOPSIS

In the early part of the 21st Century, an unknown virus began spreading among the populous. Within weeks it had engulfed the entire planet, from the smallest rural communities to the greatest cities. Upon the death of its host, the virus would reanimate the corpse until it was no longer able to support itself. Soon, the planet was infested with a new threat - the undead. So begins our journey into the dystopian world of The Zombie Diaries.

Three compelling video diaries chart the early days of the plague, right through to the last days of the apocalypse:

A documentary film crew travel to the countryside to make a movie about the virus. Unaware of what is happening around the country, the team is accidentally caught up in the outbreak. They later take shelter in a nearby wood, where a much more sinister fate awaits them.

A husband and wife escape London and pick up a mysterious hitchhiker as they scavenge the remnants of dead towns, unaware of the dangers that wait for them in the shadows.

A group of survivors flee to an old farm to seek refuge, only to find themselves under siege from creatures that attack in the dead of night.

Watch the devastation unfold through the eyes of those who were there...
Just released on DVD in region 2. CNN has video up of the "Zombie Walk" in London today. Hundreds of zombies took to the streets in a promotional gimmick: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/off...ies.record.cnn

Well, Romero wrote his years ago, so it's not like it won't be fresh or a rip off.

They are pretty different concepts. Romero's is about student filmmakers making a horror film who stumbled upon the outbreak and film the beginnings of it.

This film seems to chronicles three different perspectives and from beginning to end of the apocalypse.

Both look good to me.

"Diary of the Dead" has been picked up by the Weinstein Company. Apparently many companies were bidding for it within minutes of it's screening (many were direct to DVD companies), but Weinstein company has committed to doing a theatrical release for the film.

Hopefully it'll be soon.

Are we paying attention? George Romero jumping on the 'zombie bandwagon' would be like saying maybe the Rolling Stones should jump on this 'rock and roll bandwagon' or Les Paul should maybe jump on the 'electric guitar bandwagon.'

Glad to see a studio picked this up and plan on putting it in theaters. I saw Land at midnight opening day, so hopefully I can do the same for this one. So far the reviews have been pretty damn good. It's nice to know you can always count on George to deliver a quality film.

You obviously never saw Monkey Shines, Two Evil Eyes, The Dark Half, and Bruiser then. Even Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead were much weaker sequels than it's predecessors (then again, it is hard to follow up on what are considered the two-single greatest zombie movies ever made).

I'll still see it as I have great faith in the man, but like many of the filmmakers who were at their peak the same time Romero was (Landis, Argento, Carpenter) haven't been able to make a film as solid as their first efforts.

I like The Dark Half and love Monkey Shines (though the other two are atrocious).

Never saw the Dark Half, but "Bruiser" was so bad that I didn't even finish it. It was just boring, and it had this awful "jazzy" music playing while people are being killed in certain scenes that completely was out of place. I'm a huge Romero fan though (I love all his zombie movies, and Martin as well.)

I disagree strongly about Day, I put it up there with the first two. It has the best performances and best FX.

Diary is looking great, can't wait, but it probably won't hit theatres for months.

I can't argue that Day has the best FX of the first three, but the best acting? Ouch. Some of that acting is so hammy I'm surprised I don't have to cure my DVD to stop it from spoiling.

I disagree, I felt it was all within reason (except for maybe some one or two line soldiers [Nicotero], but it wasn't any worse than the equivalent in the others). Logan and Bub (especially) are some of the best performances in any film ever. Rhodes is over the top, but understandbly, they may be the last 12 people left on earth, why stay calm and hide emotions? Especially when all his men keep dying and the threat of zombies is a wooden wall and chainlink fence away. He's an asshole on the brink, if he acted any other way it would feel ungenuine. His underlings are following their leader.

Ultimately none of leads were flat, which I can't say about any of the previous films. Of course there is a lot appealing about the previous performances, they helped make many of the lines so classic.
