Romero returns to 'Dead' zone

NEW YORK -- The dead are rising again. Horror maven George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," following in the tradition of his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead." With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches. After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said. (Gregg Goldstein)

Geez, so this will be the 4th "of the Dead" movie (not even counting Shaun) in about 3-4 years? If they make another one, it should be Milking of the Dead.

as an alternate to "of the dead" they could go the route of

... of Hell
... from Hell
... of the Living Dead

You can never have too many zombie movies, in my opinion. The plot for this one doesn't sound too great, but I'll still happily watch this film just as I have the other four Romero zombie films. It will be interesting to see the differences between this independent film and the studio-made Land of the Dead.

After 3 zombie movies that began way back in 1968 you would think Romero would come up with a movie plot that would either show the end of the zombies or of the human race.

I would like to see a Film showing what's going on all over the world or at least with other groups trying to survive.

After Land of the Dead, I have given up all hope for George Romero.

I've enjoyed all of Romero's Dead films up to this point, and actually like Land the more I watch it. Maybe it'll have a similar reception to Day.

Anyway, the plot sounds kind of silly (maybe it's supposed to), and the whole college student thing worries me a bit. However, it's not like he'll have famous young "it" actors of today considering his budget is lower this time.

I also don't like the whole Blair Witch comparison, but Romero is very good at doing the documentary style, so he should atleast be able to pull that off.

With that said, I'll see it anyway, it's a zombie movie and by the best in the genre.

I feel bad for Romero, zombie films are all he has...Zombies at night, Zombies at a military base, Zombies at a mall, Zombies in the future that are now smart. What ever happened to 'Dead Reckoning--Zombies in Canada' the "sequal" to 'Land of the Dead'

It's like Puzo wanting to make ANOTHER Godfather movie. And most in Hollywood fear being typecast, weird.

Romero can't use the phrase "Living Dead" in his films. They're owned by someone else, who used it for the Return of the Living Dead series. Romero got the whole "Dawn/Day" thing.

At this point Romero can't worry too much about being typecast. He's getting on in years and wants to do his "thang" before it's too late.

Now that's just silly. Land of the dead was amazing...

Sure it was. It was amazing in a, "finally Romero is making Dead movies again" kind of way. But other than that, it was just ok. As much as I love the "Zombie/Living dead" genre I still can't get myself to buy "Land" on dvd.

But hey, different strokes...

Romero - Hey guys I have a great new movie idea.
Studio - Let's hear it.
Romero - It's a family drama.
Studio - Really...
Romero - Yeah it examines the inner turmoil of a family going thru a divorce.
Studio - So when do the zombies show up.
Romero - The zombies?
Studio - Does the family overcome its problems when the zombie kills the daughter and they have to band together?
Romero - No there are no zombies.
Studio - So what else do you have?

I know that eating human flesh probably wreaks havoc with digestion, but do we really need Diarrhea of the Dead?

I have Day of the Dead but haven't seen it. I wasn't a big fan of Dawn of the Dead. Maybe my expectations were a bit too high.

Land of the Dead I came in with zero expectations and I liked it a lot. It's not a classic, but it's very serviceable.

What exactly was amazing about it? If anyone else besides Romero had made that film I bet Romero fans would all be on here bashing it.

It was "eh." for me. Compared to the new Dawn of the Dead it was weak, IMO. I think I could make a better zombie film than Land of the Dead. Shaun of the Dead was much better as well, IMO.

For me, Land of the Dead is one of those movies that you can put in anytime and enjoy. The main characters are likeable...hell, even John Leguizamo is tolerable in this...and there's enough action and social commentary to keep it interesting. And anytime you can get Dennis Hopper to be a B-movie quality baddie is a good time in my book.

I can agree with those points. Don't get me wrong, I may not have dug it all that much but whenever it's on HBO I'm watching it. I just don't think "Land" is the "masterpiece" that some make it out to be.

I'm looking forward to this just to watch the fanboys here blow every frame of the film and try to explain the really clever subtext.

I agree, 'Shaun' was far superior IMO to 'Land'

'Land' seemed like a flawed attempt to jump on the zombie bandwagon - even the gore was pretty non-memorable.

To the one thing that dissapointed me about LAND OF THE DEAD was the make-up.
The Michael Jackson THRILLER zombies from 1983 looked better.
The "big daddy" zombie looked like Wal-Mart halloween makeup on his face.
