Question:

In one scene, the head-honcho, hairy drug lord and the Asian chick are driving down a dark street in their motorcade. The street is littered with what looks like crushed styrofoam coolers and people are picking through them.

What was that all about?

maybe to show the poverty in the area and that people will pick it up to sell it, beats me.

anyway, just saw this today and really enjoyed it.

I don't think Universal will be planning a Miami Vice 2. This movie is a big time money loser. It's only made $60M worldwide.

Alright movie but nothing special. Oh and Mr Mann. Next time you get an asian chick to play a major role make sure she's had more than 2 english lessons. This movie needed subtitles.

Miami Vice was on when I was, like, five. But I always thought of if to be this escapistic, pop-song-laden craze. A lot like Bad Boys.

But this movie ... very real. The camerawork. I didn't see any method. No style. Cold, disconnected work-driven characters. The lack of backstory and setup - and subsequently, the way they just throw you right in there. The point blank headshots. I even picked up on little details like the split second delay in Foxx firing that grenade (or whatever it was) at the end. This movie tried it's absolute best to emphasize those details.

I dug it.

Finally, someone who gets it! This is Mann's most hard-boiled film.

I saw this last night and I came out of it not liking it. But I don't know, perhaps it will grow on me like The Hulk did.

I still can't believe how many of you liked this movie. I know about 8 other people that saw it and all of them hated it.

An excellent point. There's a difference between movies that lack proper exposition and movies where the development of a character is underdone on purpose and you (as the audience) need to fill in the lines. I don't mind movies where I have to fill in the lines; I enjoy them.

A few posters here are on some sort of anti-Miami Vice crusade and bringing it up on other threads where it doesn't even make sense ("What's your favorite sci-fi movie?" "Not Miami Vice! That movie stunk!"). It's like Michael Mann did some personal disservice to them by making this movie. Get over yourselves.

Here's my guess: The area looks to be possibly some type of fish market. Perhaps the fish are shipped/stored in styrofoam, then the styrofoam is thrown out at the end of the day. The lowest end of the poverty scale is so extreme in these countries that to some it becomes unthinkable: families that live in landfills and make their living from finding scrap and selling it. That's not how everyone lives, obviously, and that's not how most poor people live, but it's a reality nevertheless.

The documentary Darwin's Nghtmare shows this very thing in Lake Victoria in Africa. In this case the scrap is fish carcasses!

To each his own, I personally liked the movie, but I can understand why people didn't like it.

I liked the movie, seen it last week and Thought it was pretty good, too long though. Wasnt really Miami Vice, too dark and seemed like it never took place in Miami. I thought it was kind of wierd how the movie just started no credits or anything

Saw some of the unrated version last night. Not a vast improvement, but it was nice to see the boat race we saw in the teaser and trailer re-instated at the beginning. It also adds opening credits.

I saw this again and was even more captivated by the camera work, as well as by the Luis Tosar's portrayal of the bearded, elder Montoya. The guy has what, like 20 lines the whole movie? There's a scene where his entire response is doing nothing. You see the back of his head but can just imagine the glare he's giving the person talking to him.

I'm slowly liking this flawed movie more and more.

i saw this yesterday on dvd. not a bad movie but needed a little more action. i love michael mann but this movie is about a half hour too long for the story he is telling. very realistic but paced poorly.

funny both new films on dvd pirates 2 and miami vice both have pacing problems. i still liked miami vice it was interesting despite its pacing problems. but poc2 seemed like the movie that would not end. it seemed like a pointless story to lead into and set up the 3rd film. i don't care how much money poc2 made and dvds it sells i still say it's a clunker of a film. a rare time i agree with the critics over the audience. the poc2 reminds me of jurassic park 2. i'm sorry i digrees from miami vice. good film a little slow but interesting if you stick to it.

Question: I skipped to the end credits of the Director's Cut and found that "In the Air Tonight" is gone. I actually liked that on the original version. Is it gone altogether or has it been relocated like some of the other stuff?

After viewing the visual style extra, I am gaining a new respect for this film. It still has major story and pacing problems, but it is great to look at any given scene and marvel at its beauty.

Spoiler:
The song is now heard during the setup for the final shootout up until the shootout begins.

That actually would have worked better in the theatrical cut IMO. While I doubt it would have made much difference in terms of ticket sales, I think this unrated version is what should have gone to the screen.

I liked it, but one thing is absolutely driving me crazy.....did I miss something???

Spoiler:
Dom (the guy from entourage) was the team member that Farrell sent over. When the shooting commences, I believe he flanks over to the left of the scene near the Black Suburban. He proceeds to take the driver out from behind with his shotgun and then he gets another kill later in the scene. What the hell happens to him? Did I miss it? It kind of ruins the scene as is because he took out two guys and would be able to flank the skinheads from their right. But their attention is never drawn that way during the fight and we never seen Dom again. ???

Ditto.

I'm a little .. alright, very .. late to the party on this film. Striking off the bat! Mann delivers more than I anticipated .. sad to admit since I am a fan of the original TV series. His signature is all over the board, but when it comes right down to it, (and as of others have said) it's a beautiful(ly shot) film but it's seriously sensible based on what else Hollywood has to deliver these days.

As silly as some of the scripting elements may have seemed, and plot predictability and holes - or typical nature (well, Hollywood does need to sell films), it far made up for with intent and direction. It is raw, slick and to the point. Above all else, it was intriguing ... no matter as to whether or not a typical shoot out ending was meant to be. Heat set the bar, but MV delivered in another form of entertainment. Great shootout!!

Forgiving its weaknesses, Miami Vice, while I wouldn't necessarily call it that aside from its tie ins, is an excellent high level policing suspense film that .. albeit doesn't fit the typical bill (which is a good thing), kicks into high gear from start to finish.

Btw .. as old as Gong Li appears, she it still a gem of nature as I could ever ask for ..

I'd love to hear what their top ten movies of all times is just for shits and giggles. Then, I'd like to hear what they really would have been ...

.. for strictly baseful purposes of course ... ... not that it matters.
