But this movie ... very real. The camerawork. I didn't see any method. No style. Cold, disconnected work-driven characters. The lack of backstory and setup - and subsequently, the way they just throw you right in there. The point blank headshots. I even picked up on little details like the split second delay in Foxx firing that grenade (or whatever it was) at the end. This movie tried it's absolute best to emphasize those details.
I dug it.

just rented this the other night and was very impressed overall. the storyline was a bit weak and yes, there were cliches, but damn, stylewise it was over the top and stunning to behold. Gong Li is a goddess...

Saw it a couple of days ago and I have to say that this IMO is one of the better films of 2006. One of Mann's most underrated, one day it will get the respect it deserves.
The visuals and the feel of the movie remind me of Jean-Pierre Melville & Terence Malick with its sprawling nighttime urban landscapes and deep focus cinematography.

Nice bump. I never posted about it in this thread, but I think Miami Vice is far and away one of Michael Mann's best films, perhaps even his second best after Heat.

Yeah, it's one of his better films, though I'd also place (since I recently seen it), Thief ahead of it along with Heat.

Re: Miami Vice - The Review Thread
I remember this movie getting largely bashed by my friends, who were either disappointed or upset it wasn't just like the TV show, taking place in the 80's. I thought Mann hit it out of the park with his movie update. I even got by with Colin Farrell looking the way he did. Watching the theatrical and unrated cuts, I actually wondered why any of the footage was cut for the theatrical, especially that sequence at the beginning with the boat race. Made a hell of a lot more sense for there later scenes. Great, now I'll have to pull this out again and watch it.

Re: Miami Vice - The Review Thread
I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters and am actually in the minority in that I feel the theatrical cut is superior to the extended cut (Mann makes a point in the audio commentary to state that, despite the labeling on the cover art, the extended cut is not his director's cut of the movie). The boat race wasn't needed at all and I prefer how the movie originally began in the middle of a case with not opening credits sequence whatsoever.
I just wish Mann had used the original version of "In the Air Tonight". The cover version was absolute crap.

God did I hate that song when it came up in the movie the first time I saw it. I still prefer the boat race though, if anything because it looks damn cool. But I know Mann is big into just jumping right into the story the way this movie opened up theatrically. I guess I like both versions, I don't really see one superior than the other when it comes to this movie.

I went opening night and actually enjoyed the movie. (The extended cut on Blu-ray is better) I just remember walking back to my car from the AMC at Universal City and hearing a couple behind me bitching, "That was nothing like Bad Boys!"

The only thing I remember from this movie is the audio for the vocals was shit in the theater I saw it in. The action and surround was blaring, but could barely hear anyone talking.
I rented the movie when I came out only to find the exact same mixing problem. So, I can only assume it was meant to be like that.
Fail.

Was there ever any talk about a sequel or did this not perform well enough in the box office to warrant one? I would have liked another movie with Crockett and Tubbs.

As for how much money it made, Wikipedia had this to say about it:

I like the movie a lot. The ending kind of sucks. Apparently Jamie Foxx was a real bitch during the making of the film and refused to do the original scripted ending.

Spoiler:
Retrospectively speaking, this was a good movie. Basically an action movie for people who like the slow burn approach.

Just read this in IMDB as well as why the ending was changed. I can sort of understand Foxx's reasoning for that, but this was a total dick move.
"Shortly before filming, Jamie Foxx won the Oscar for Ray (2004). Because of this, he demanded a raise in his salary which originally was lower than Colin Farrell's. Farrell's salary was cut. "

Surprised to read that so many people liked this. I remember thinking it was an okay film but pretty forgettable overall.

That said, he was a bitch during production demanding a pay raise and that Farrell have his salary cut because Foxx recently won an Oscar for Ray.

I was in the same boat. I didn't like the movie much the first time I saw it. Picked up the blu for $2 at one of the Blockbuster closing sales, gave it another shot and really enjoyed it.
