I'll be the first to admit that I never thought the movie would do this well...but the last line of that blurb from "reputable" news source IMDB really seems like hyperbole. The movie will make oodles of money, likely sailing right past $400 million, but $600 million is another level. $600 million is a cultural phenomenon.

Let's check out the movies legs in week 3 (when it'll actually have competition again) and then start breaking out those predictions. If its still breaking off $15-20 million weekend on August 1st, then we can talk.

I can see it doing $400-450 million domestically but not over $600 million. There's still a lot of summer movies that'll catch movie-goer's attentions. Titanic came out in the winter with virtually no big competition.

From IMDB
WOW!!!

Now only if the Matrix sequels blew up this big . . . I'm really eager to see how the 3rd one does next year . . . we know the "Reloaded" followed by "Revolutions" within the same year wasn't so "hot" at the box-office . . . there's at least a little more time between the sequels for "Pirates" and it's obvious the fanbase is much larger.

$600 million is just plain unrealistic. 400 million is more like it.

They're just going to keep trotting out that "bigger than Titantic" line until finally some movie actually does beat it.

No way this will reach $600 million. No way this will reach $500 million. The writers speculating this are the same ones who pick a blockbuster every year and start the "it may have a chance to beat Titanic" nonsense.

POTC 2's front loaded opening was great, but Titanic is the definition of consistency.

-10 straight weekends earning at least $20 million
-16 straight weekends earning at least $10 million
-#1 movie for 16 straight weekends

Its opening weekend total was only $28.6 million.

$400 mil: probably.

$600 mil: Not until tickets are $20 a pop.

I don't think the time frame had anything to do with Revolutions poor performance. The problem was that WB followed up a small turd with a steaming pile of shit.

Well if it only drops 38% this weekend, that's what Spider-man did in its 2nd weekend, then it will make over $80 mill this weekend. Realisticly, that probably won't happen. But if it does follow Spider-man's % drops for the next 3 weekends here's roughly the totals for each weekend:

This coming weekend: $83 million
3rd weekend: $52 Million
4th Weekend: $33 Million
for a total of $168 million and you still have to add in weekday grosses.

Of course this is all based on Spider-man only dropping an average of 37-38% each week but if Pirates can do it then it has a shot at breaking Titanic.

I think POTC2's drops will be a little higher, but there's no direct competition coming out for a couple of weeks. Lady in the Water should open well and so should Miami Vice, but nothing else will come close to Pirates for this month.

I don't think it will beat Titanic. Even Return of The King - only the 2nd film to crack a billion dollars, made "only" $370m (ish) in the US. Didn't Titanic make so much, partly because it had great legs but also repeat viewings? (That said it can't all have been teen girls creaming themselves over Leo)

I believe that Pirates will be #1 again this weekend as I can't see You, Me and Dupree overtaking it.

I don't think it's a question if it will be #1 again this weekend but how much it will make in its second weekend. I will go with $65 million.

I know a lot of people who haven't seen this film but still plan on going. I'd say 80 mil this weekend. I haven't been yet and plan on taking someone on Monday.

I think there's a very good chance this will be in the $70 - $80 million range. I doubt Little Man and You, Me and Depree will even combine for $70 million. I'd be shocked.

Don't give them any ideas! (They're going to be looking for some way to make POTC 3 an even bigger event.)

Don't underestimate Little Man.

If there's anything the first half of the year taught me, it's "don't count on the taste of the moviegoing public."

There's no way it opens bigger than White Chicks ($19 Million). If there's any decency in this world, it won't make more than 19 Dollars, but if it makes even more money than White Chicks, it will be a dark day indeed.
Spoiler:
And I mean that in a non-racist way.

Pirates almost made $200 million before today. Thursday's total was $12.1 million, brining the US total to $195.7 million in 7 days.

Box Office Mojo is predicting $63.5 million this weekend.

Tight race between SW Episode 3, This, and Spidey 2 right now.

However, SW Ep3 and Spidey 2 opened on Holiday weekends.
