I have to weigh in and say one great opening sequence does not a great film make. So Saving Private Ryan was not robbed, as it never deserved to be best picture, anyway.
The biggest crime in the Academy's history (aside from Ordinary People beating Raging Bull AND The Elephant Man) was 2001: A Space Odyssey only winning an award for special effects.

I still haven't seen a better-made drama from Speilberg.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gladiator and thought it deserved it. Blockbusters or anything bordering on a blockbuster seem to not be given much of a chance at showing their merit at awards time, and thus I feel a lot of people bag them if they win. But Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has got to be one of the most overrated asian films I've seen. "Hero" should have been considered ... maybe.

thats the one i was going to mention after Shawshank of course. Three movies that are critically acclaimed and were up for awards that i just did not like included....
English Patient-- I hated this movie. I did not give a damn for the characters , could care less what happened to them. It was boring and way too long. In fairness I tried it again a couple of years later and still did not care for it. Slingblade or Fargo where MUCH superior films.
Chariots of Fire-- I tried numerous times to get through this one. I would have taken ANY other nominated movie that year. Especially On Golden Pond or heck even Raiders.
Out of Africa-- as a huge Redford fan I was excited for this film and it sure was disappointing. Color Purple had better chartacters, a more compelling story , and was just a much better movie imho.
There is other fine films that I have thought would win over the years (Shawshank, Crying Game, My Left Foot, etc ) and i may have voted different if i had the chance but at least the winning films were enjoyable.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. While up against a very good film in A Beautiful Mind, this film was the catalyst for the global acclaim of the films AND, IMHO, the better of the three in the trilogy based on initial character development and laying the groundwork for such a rich, diverse universe.

And they certainly did so, with all eleven nominations winning.
