I also point to Saving Private Ryan. But the biggest reason I now have no respect for the Oscars is Tom Hanks not winning for Castaway.

I don't know if it should have won, but it certainly was a really, really heartwarming picture.

I believe The Treasure of the Sierra Madre deserved to win. I don't recall ever seeing Laurence Olivier's Hamlet, which won that year (1948).

I have to weigh in and say one great opening sequence does not a great film make. So Saving Private Ryan was not robbed, as it never deserved to be best picture, anyway.

The biggest crime in the Academy's history (aside from Ordinary People beating Raging Bull AND The Elephant Man) was 2001: A Space Odyssey only winning an award for special effects.

I still haven't seen a better-made drama from Speilberg.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned this yet, but my vote goes to Fargo, which lost to The Englist Patient in '96.

I have to go with L.A. Confidential (even though I have softened my stance on Titanic).

I think it's less about hating Forrest Gump, and more about the fact that Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption were much, much more deserving.

I personally rooted for Traffic or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It was the film "Gladiator" that took home Best Picture for 2000.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gladiator and thought it deserved it. Blockbusters or anything bordering on a blockbuster seem to not be given much of a chance at showing their merit at awards time, and thus I feel a lot of people bag them if they win. But Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has got to be one of the most overrated asian films I've seen. "Hero" should have been considered ... maybe.

thats the one i was going to mention after Shawshank of course. Three movies that are critically acclaimed and were up for awards that i just did not like included....

English Patient-- I hated this movie. I did not give a damn for the characters , could care less what happened to them. It was boring and way too long. In fairness I tried it again a couple of years later and still did not care for it. Slingblade or Fargo where MUCH superior films.

Chariots of Fire-- I tried numerous times to get through this one. I would have taken ANY other nominated movie that year. Especially On Golden Pond or heck even Raiders.

Out of Africa-- as a huge Redford fan I was excited for this film and it sure was disappointing. Color Purple had better chartacters, a more compelling story , and was just a much better movie imho.

There is other fine films that I have thought would win over the years (Shawshank, Crying Game, My Left Foot, etc ) and i may have voted different if i had the chance but at least the winning films were enjoyable.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. While up against a very good film in A Beautiful Mind, this film was the catalyst for the global acclaim of the films AND, IMHO, the better of the three in the trilogy based on initial character development and laying the groundwork for such a rich, diverse universe.

I personally felt that Walk the Line should have been nominated over Crash.

However, the reason why AMPAS voters didn't award The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring the Best Picture Oscar was simple: the voters waited for AFTER The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to do so as a cumulative award for all three films. And they certainly did so, with all eleven nominations winning.

They should'nt have. They should have awarded each film for their merits. If all three deserved Best Picture, then all three should've been awarded Best Picture, not be given some "cumulative award" at the end. If the Fellowship was the only one that warranted awards for Cinematography and Best overall picture, then award it at the time. If the Two Towers was the best technical achievement of the trilogy, then award it Best Sound/Visual effects. I don't understand the idea of "saving up all the Oscars" so they can be showered on the trilogy as a whole when it's finished, because the history books will always imply that Return of the King was far and away a whole lot better than the other pictures, which I don't believe - it's Fellowship for me - and the reality is that they're all exceptional.

Munich or even Capote should have won over Crash in 05.
