Pulp Fiction

Disagree with Saving Private Ryan as I didn't care for it and LOVE Shakespeare in Love.

Malcolm X was unfairly overlooked. A damn shame, because it is a great picture.

Goodfellas, Saving Private Ryan seem to be the popular picks.

Also, and i'm being 100% biased in this statement, Casino should have won best picture

The director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. Of course, this is more 20th Century Fox's fault over anyone else, but I think it definitely could've been an oscar contender had it not been raped...

I thought Forrest Gump beat them both.

I agree though that Pupl Fiction and Shawshank are better movies.

Although I liked Million Dollar Baby and of the 5 nominated in 2004 was my pick, the real travesty is that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. Clearly considered one of the very best movies of that year by many critics and people in general.

Chicago was horrible. I actually thought "Road to Perdition" was the best movie that year. I don't even think it was nominated.

well I liked Chicago, but I agree it wasn't the 'best' movie of that year.

Forrest Gump was one of the, if not dumbest film to win Best Picture... ever!

It's gotta be Brokeback Mountain, as the most acclaimed film in motion picture history. How the hell did this trip at the last hurdle? Crash was contrived, manipulative bullshit.

I also feel sorry every time Scorsese missed out on a Best Picture win, and it gets worse each time the Academy snubs him. But Raging Bull has got to be his most deserved but never awarded. I never really thought Goodfellas was as good as everybody claims.

I would say the exact opposite. Brokeback was without a doubt the most dull piece of shit I have ever sat through. A story about two boring guys that do nothing with their lives but go fishing every few months and pound each other.

Crash was a very powerful movie and looked at racism in a very honest way. If Crash had lost the Oscar to Brokeback it would have been a crime.

As far as the thread goes obviously Citizen Kane was the most robbed film in history.

The fact that both of the Haggis scripts went on to win best picture makes the Academy laughable, in my opinion.

Shakespeare in Love is a unbelievably forgettable movie. Horrible at best.

I've already explained the reason why in my previous post listed above. I don't even waste my time watching the Academy, nor The Golden Globe Awards three hour ceremonies anymore, due to the fact they have become so politically unjustifiable. The Grammy Awards are the same way. I just read the results in the newspaper entertainment section the next day.

The reason Crash won Best Picture is because the Academy liked it better. Brokeback Mountain lost in Cinematography, lost all of its acting categories, and was not even nominated for Editing, which is something the eventual Best Picture winner almost always gets a nod. So they didn't think it was as technically well made as its competitors.

at the "most acclaimed film in motion picture history". I think we'd see movies like Citizen Kane and The Godfather to be far higher on a best of all-time list.

1995 might have been the worst overall year in Oscar history. Braveheart took home the prize. A good film, but not a great film. An hour of pure melodrama could have easily been snipped. Braveheart was nominated for director, picture, and original screenplay, but not in any acting categories.

Here's what Braveheart beat out for picture:
Sense & Sensability
Apollo 13
Babe
Il Postino

But here's what films were NOT nominated for picture:
Leaving Las Vegas - nom for actor (win), actress, director, adapted screenplay
Dead Man Walking - nom for actor, actress (win), director
The Usual Suspects - nom for supporting actor (win), original screenplay (win)
Nixon - nom for actor, supporting actress, original screenplay
Toy Story - nom for original screenplay
Se7en - nom for editing, but nothing else
Casino - nom for supporting actress

You can make arguments for any of these films getting a best pic nom over any/all of the 5 actually nominated. Personally, I felt Leaving Las Vegas, Dead Man Walking, and The Usual Suspects all at least deserved best pic noms and ALL, I felt, were much better than Braveheart.

Mississippi Burning should won best picture over Rain Man which I hated it after watching it.

Oh yeah, Hackman should got the best actor. Hoffman was overrated IMHO.

I totally disagree! Dustin Hoffman's Oscar winning performances for Rain Man, and Kramer vs Kramer were superb, and well deserved. Dustin Hoffman is one of the best actors in the movie industry, and he is strictly not overrated.

I'm talking about awards and best picture honours from various societies and organisations. More than any other film.
