Best picture that got robbed of the Oscar?

I didn't see this anywhere and I can't remember too many, but i want this to jog my memory of the best pictures of a year that literally got robbed of Oscar gold.

Groucho 06-08-06 09:50 AM

We had a thread like this back in 2000. I remember most of the responses were along the lines of "OMG THE MATRIX WAS ROBED FUK THE ACADEMY!!!!"

whaaat 06-08-06 09:55 AM

Citizen Kane
Pulp Fiction
Do The Right Thing

[/thread]

Mr. Cinema 06-08-06 09:56 AM

The first one that always comes to mind and pisses me off the most is Saving Private Ryan.

Giles 06-08-06 10:02 AM

Brokeback Mountain ;)

Yes, that was bullshit. "Shakespeare in Love" -ohbfrank-

Goodfellas also should have won best picture over that crapfest "Dances With Wolves."

Zodiac_Speaking 06-08-06 10:07 AM

Raging Bull.

SiL was a crap pick. i mean what in it made it worthy anyway? when i saw it it seemed so ordinary. not bad, but not upper echelon.

Dr. DVD 06-08-06 10:08 AM

Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Saving Private Ryan

-While it wasn't nominated, I always thought Heat was the best movie of 1995.

Kudama 06-08-06 10:10 AM

I literally couldn't believe that SE7EN wasn't even nominated, let alone not sweeping the oscars for its year. I hadn't been previously moved as profoundly by how perfect a film was. I still feel that it is a flaw free film as well as groundbreaking. If you look at many of the films following it you can see that it was at least as influential as Star Wars.
The opening credits sequence is mimicked (pun intended) to this day.

Johnny Boy 06-08-06 10:14 AM

Malcolm X. It doesn't make much sense that Malcolm X didn't win best picture. Unforgiven is decent, but to me it's the biggest robbing of all-time. The second biggest is Denzel losing Best Actor to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. A joke.

Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas

I knew that wouldn't take long.

I'm one of the admittedly few people who thinks Ordinary People is a great film and deserved the award.

Since Robert Redford's films have all pretty much sucked since then (Quiz Show is OK) it looks like he was lucky or something but there it is.

Star Wars (1977), although Annie Hall is great, so I am not that mad

Saving Private Ryan (1998), I have never respected the Oscars since

Goodfellas (1990) & Raging Bull (1980), Come on, Scorcese deserves one oscar before he dies!

The Sixth Sense or The Green Mile (1999), American Beauty was overrated

rw2516 06-08-06 10:55 AM

Although The Apartment is an excellant film and Best Picture worthy I prefer Spartacus .

lordwow 06-08-06 11:16 AM

It took 18 posts to mention the one and only(?!?):

The Shawshank Redemption

jeffkjoe 06-08-06 11:23 AM

Oh, in terms of being the most influential motion picture of its time?

STAR WARS, for Pete's sakes!!!

Who gives two shits about Annie Hall (even though it's a great movie, but still!)

tommyp007 06-08-06 11:24 AM

After recently seeing Shakespeare in Love for the first time, I gotta go Saving Private Ryan.

It's hard to believe that A FEW GOOD MEN was nominated for Best Picture over MALCOLM X. X only got Best Actor and Best Costume nominations. A blatant insult to Lee. I lost respect for the Academy Awards that year.

Washington should have won the Oscar as well, but even he agreed that Pacino was passed up for too long.

I also agree that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was robbed.

Taxi Driver should have won over Rocky.

Mr. Cinema 06-08-06 11:55 AM

I think I would have chosen Network over both of those. It did receive a whopping 5 Acting nominations.

I would have selected:

Raging Bull in 1980.
Born on the Fourth of July over Driving Miss Daisy in 1989.
Pulp Fiction in '94
The Insider in '99
Traffic in 2000
LOTR in 2001
Anything but Chicago in 2002
Master and Commander in 2003

[diction nazi]Unless a producer who won best picture was ever mugged of his statue on the way to the after party, I don't think anyone's ever been literally robbed of a best picture oscar. [/diction nazi]

I thought Shakespeare in Love was deserving of best picture. That year I'd put it at 1A and SPR at 1B.

And Pulp Fiction should have won best picture before Shawshank. It's just too bad they came out the same year. Although it seems that over time Shawshank is now being regarded as a better film between the two.
