If you didn't think Jar-Jar was in your face enough, imagine him in 3D.

does Lucas know that The Phantom Menace is universally hated? I'm getting the sense that he really doesn't. He must have a fantastic entourage that shields him from negativity.

^ No one can be shielded from that much negativity. No way he doesn't know. He just doesn't care.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
Lucas addressed it recently at Celebration V:
On annoying characters:
"There always has to be someone who takes the brunt of the ridicule," says Lucas. "In the first film, it was Threepio. Nobody could stand Threepio. They hated him, he was the worst character on Earth. All he did was talk, he was fussy, etc. Then, in the third film, we introduce the cute little Ewoks, and that then took all the pressure off Threepio. The last victim of this ridicule is poor old Jar Jar Binks, which is basically the same fussy mumbly guy that Threepio was."
On the generation gap between trilogies:
"We know we have a real honest-to-God generation gap with Star Wars, which we found out after Episode I," explains Lucas. "Anyone over 40 loves IV, V, and VI, and hates I, II, and III. And you'll notice the kids under 30 all love I, II, and III, and hate IV, V, and VI" (at this point, a din of friendly protests arose from the audience). Now, we've got The Clone Wars for the under-ten-year-olds. Come on ten-year-olds, fight for your rights!"

So he knows that the masses hated Threepio so he keeps doing it?
As much as I support 3D and I love the SW universe, I will not pay to see this movie... now Episodes 4-6? Hell yes.

Not really interested in 3-D conversions after the fact, but I do have to defend TPM a little. It is full of flaws to be sure, but I maintain to this day Eps 2 and 3 would have done far better if they had maintained the tone of Ep 1. George apparently took the criticism of Ep 1 to heart and that's why 2 has such a different feel, and why it suffers (even though the story does hang together better than TPM's does).

You think 2 and 3 would have been better if they were as bad as the pile of shit that TPM was? Milo, you're losing me!
Anyway, I enjoy 3D but this news sucks. Should wait for next year and release OT in 3D. He'd easily bank 250 - 500 million again for each picture. Well, he'll probably do that anyway! No one wants to see Jar Jar stepping in 3D doo-doo.

O yea, I was joking btw! Despite it's flaws I can still rewatch TPM. AOTC is simply unwatchable for me anymore. The Hayden-Portman scenes are brutal to get through, much more so than Jar Jar or young Anakin.

Now they don't talk about the trilogies like we do, they just call them by episode numbers. My one friends who was not a SW fan growing up so he doesn't even know what the PT or OT is, he just told me they like the ones with Luke Skywalker more. Although the one PT movie that kids seem to like is Episode III.
The ironic thing is most of them get into the movies and really have moved on as they just don't seem to be as big fans as we were as kids. Star Wars was our life as a kid, there was nothing like it.
As for Star Wars in 3-D, I am done giving my money to Lucas as I learned my lesson. I'll take a pass on this.

Exactly...that "dialogue" she says to "Ani" on whatever the fuck they were in RoTS right before Kenobi comes around..is literally the worst acting I've ever seen in a mainstream movie that i've gone to a theater for. WHY?! Does Lucas like shit acting? Seriously...actors and etc need to stand up to this man...

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
The younger generation isn't going to go see a 30 year old movie and most of the fans of the originals don't care enough about 3-D to see a movie that wasn't even meant to be in 3-D for probably the 200th time.
I love Star Wars, but I certainly don't need to see it again in the theater. I'll just sit at home and watch it and 3-D doesn't interest me in the least.

I'll never watch the OT in a theater until we get the original OT. In otherwords..I've never seen the OT in it's original form.

Fuck 3D conversions of older movies, just let some other people make newer films. The fact that the various articles mention that the rest of the films would be released contingent on Episode 1's take should force them to consider new films.

Did people really hate Threepio when the original Star Wars came out? I've seen plenty of criticism of the original movie (real criticism, not internet fan boy crybabying) and I never got that impression.
