Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

I definitely agree that the basic plot outline of the prequels wasn't a problem, in fact, I really enjoyed the whole idea of the Trade Federation and the Galactic Senate but really Lucas didn't know how great of a story he had and he royally screwed it all up.

Like how there was a setup for Count Dooku to reveal Palpatine as the Sith Lord yet it was never brought up again. What a dope.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

Sounds like this guy had a good theater experience.
I went to a 7:45 show tonight with my wife and two sons. We got there a little early and lucky us because the 501st were in the lobby. My sons got to see Vader, Jango Fett, Stormtrooper, clones etc. It was a nice surprise and the kids loved it. I took a few pics and will post when I get a chance. The theater was about 3/4 packed. There was a guy dressed as Darth Maul and was very vocal. At first I thought he was going to be annoying but he got the crowd into it. Let me tell you was the crowd into this like never before. R2 got an ovation and people screamed when Anakin won the pod race. When the final LS battle started there were clapping and cheering again. A kid behind me yelled go Jedi and there was a man in is 40's next to me clapping. It was great to see the inner child come out of people for Star Wars once again. I seen all the Star Wars movies in the theaters from 1980 to present. (didn't see ANH in it's first run) The special editions, midnight showings etc. I must say this was the most enthusiastic a movie crowd can be. It was like a dream come true because my kids were there and it was so awesome they got to experience this with me. It was priceless to see my 6 year old cheer when Anakin wins the race and I caught my wife (who is not fan) clapping at the end. Good stuff!!

For the 3D well I can see some people who were expecting stuff thrown around to be disappointed but I loved it. The 3D added depth I can see everything clear. The Podrace was insane and so much better in 3D. Space battle was real nice as well. The battle droids looked so much better as well. Can't wait to see the open space battle in ROTS and the final battle in ROTJ. This was a great experience for me but seeing my kids and other children going nuts over this is worth every penny. This leaves me to believe that all the negative stuff towards SW is mostly internet base and Star Wars is alive and will be for a long time!! Good Job Lucas for releasing the saga back in the theaters. Now bring on AOTC!!

I don't have any doubt that for some of the younger generation that's getting a first taste of SW it's a "good thing to experience". However for some of us SW veterans it's the constant rehashing, new improved, first time ever, remastered, delux, special edition, directors cut of the same stuff. We have VHS, VHS Sets, DVD singles, DVD Sets, BR single, BR Sets, Series sets, Saga Sets and we'll soon get a SW:PM 4-Disc 3D Combo set followed by a SE:3D Series set.

But people like this are in the vast minority. I would imagine most consumers only have one version of SW on home video. Oh and you left out laserdisc

Like I've said, Star Wars is one of those movies that a lot of people love to see on the big screen. I plan on seeing Ep IV when it's released. There are other non-Star Wars movies I'd love to see on the big screen again (2001, Jaws). Unfortunately, when those get released, it's usually at one theater.

You think it was a good idea to establish that the Jedi -- the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy -- were used to negotiate trade disputes while ignoring the widespread slavery on Tatooine? The very nature of the story undermines everything Obi-wan said about the Jedi in the original film.

Only $23 million for the weekend...not bad, but nowhere near the $33 million that was predicted earlier in the weekend. The good news is Lucas can blame the snow in the Northeast for the lower number.

Didn't Jabba say he dealt with Jedi before ROTJ? Maybe I'm imagining that.

I think it would have been better to see a young slim Jabba in TPM. At least all other Hutts we see should be slim Hutts. If every Hutt if huge, then Jabba is just normal for his race and not the big bloated gangster we know him as.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012

I will always find it funny that Lucas will go to lengths with the Greedo/Han scene to justify it by saying he didn't want Han to be a cold blooded killer. Yet, he has Anakin kill a temple full of youngling jedi's (which I still have no idea why as he was a good guy 2 minutes before that).

So killing Greedo (who has a gun pointed at you) is not acceptable, but being a child killer and then getting to stand next to Obiwan and Yoda in the force ghost scene is fine and dandy in a galaxy far, far, away!

I would like the PT movies more if they were somehow made with 70s/80s effects. A world of water could just be a huge swimming pool that was really miniaturized, Darth Maul would be something like Chuck Norris style nunchukkery, and space-sails or waterfall structures would merely be further back and greenscreened pieces stuck on actual mountains.

No kidding, if a half assed trained Jedi in Luke Skywalker could figure out a way to kill Jabba and his clan I'm not sure why an entire council couldn't figure it out. To make it even worse, Luke's plan wasn't even very good. The prequels really make the Jedi look stupid.

Well when you can train a Jedi Knight in a matter or weeks what do you expect.

Actually, Lucas talks about this in the Episode II DVD Commentary. He said that they went with mostly CGI for the trilogy for budget reasons (He wanted each PT movies to cost around 115 million). He said he could have built a huge model and sets for planets like Kamino and Geonosis, but it would be alot more expensive.

Now I don't work in the movies, so I don't know how truthful Lucas is being, but I assume he's right that CGI is cheaper then real sets?

I'm sure CG is cheaper now, but 15 years ago? I don't know about that.

I always found it weird when Lucas talks about price of CG, sets, miniatures and what not. When his own companies would be doing it all. Just be paying employee wages. Not like going to another company who wants the wages paid plus profit.

Once again proving you get what you pay for. Maybe his actors would have been more inspired standing on real sets and locations instead of green screen day-in, day-out.

Thank God LOTR was filmed largely on location and real sets. It's beautiful to look at. Oh and they actually MADE costumes for all their warriors. Who'da thunk it - real sets and costumes actually look better on screen?

I think it would have been better to have Ep I - III mirror the Original Trilogy in some ways. Like have all three feature Anakin as an adult.

I don't know why, storywise, R2 and 3PO needed to be there.

I think having Anakin's parents die similar to Owen and Beru would've been good too.
