Uhm...considering that Crash has, like, what, 10-15 prominent cast members? Of *course* it's going to get the loudest reaction to, say, the four from Brokeback Mountain.

I didnt see Hide and Seek, but it sounds like something she would scream and cry in.

I dont really care for her either. I didnt like "I am Sam" at all. The only thing that I liked her in was Man on Fire.

Was it an entertaining movie? Yes. Should it win some technical awards? Yes. Thats about it though.

It was being discussed back in December how having a chance, as was Jackson for director. But all the critics choices have squashed this one's chances.

I do think it will win both Sound awards and Visuals. Could win a couple more techs.

I think the point is that Crash is very underestimated.

Brokeback is clearly the frontrunner, but Crash definately stole some steam from it last night. I wouldn't be surprised if Crash appeals more to the broad range of the Academy. Which, as MrCinema said, would be amazing since Crash came out in May.

It very well could upset. Im excited about the possibility.

Definately agree there. Also, I remember Naomi Watts being a possible for actress, but even that has not been the case.

Hollywood loves this movie. It's on most critics top 10 lists. It also grossed 12 times its budget. I'd say it's popular.

This is one of the few years were I'm rooting for several movies. Crash, Capote, Kong, Hustle and Flow, to name a few.

Yeah, I just watched Hustle and Flow this weekend...not my kind of movie normally, but it was very good. I enjoyed it.

I liked Hoffman in Capote and think he should win, but I dont think Keener has ANY place to be nominated. There are better performances out there for supporting actress.

Do you think there is any pattern to the nominations that could hint towards what will win Best Picture? Say, if Brokeback gets a nom for Heath, Jake G, Michelle and Crash gets no actor noms?

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 10:37 AM

Definitely. Usually whatever wins Editing wins Picture. But that isn't always the case. Traffic won for Editing and Director, but lost Picture to Gladiator. I think this show will be spread out. The movie with the most noms almost always gets the big prize. Crash will most likely get noms for the major categories. I have a feeling it will get the consolation prize with Screenplay. The top 2 movies usually get something. BM will likely get Picture and Director, but Crash will get Screenplay. Kinda like last year. Million Dollar Baby gets Pic, Director, Actress, Supp. Actor, but Sideways got Screenplay, Aviator got Supporting Actress, Editing and Cinematography.

fanning is the "it" girl when it comes to child roles, just like cameron bright is for the male type so who she works with is irrelevant. she has some talent but in most of her roles, she annoying as hell. only in man on fire and i am sam did i think she did a good job that no other child actor could've done but child acting isn't really that tough.

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 10:40 AM

I think Jake Lloyd proves it is tough. :)

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 10:42 AM

I think Brokeback Mountain will get Picture, Director, Editing, Score, Song, and likely Cinematography, but 0 acting wins. Hoffman, Witherspoon, and Weisz have won the Globe and SAG, not to mention almost everything else. And Supporting is down to Clooney and Giamatti.

I really think Giamatti is more of a lock. The Academy likes to reward those who were overlooked.

Does anyone think this year is similar to last in that Brokeback and Crash are as close as Million Dollar Baby and Aviator?

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 10:52 AM

I still have Giamatti penciled as the winner. Keep score of who wins on March 5th. Once they get down to the big 4 (Actor/Actress, Pic/Director), whomever has the most wins is likely taking the last 2. One scenario, and it is a long shot, is they reward BM with Director and Crash with Picture. Those 2 don't always match up either.

Sadly, Shakespeare in Love won Picture, but SPR took home Director. It was their way of saying "we love both of these movies".

They still may give Clooney the Supporting Actor, kind of as a reward for getting a Picture/Director nomination. Terrence Howard could get in for Hustle and Flow because he was so well liked in that and Crash. Multiple great performances/achievements can pay off.

I vote for Paris Hilton (the only thing I'd ever wish she'd win!)

Yeah, I can see this happening also.

Yeah, I remember when Harrison announced Shakespeare in Love. Surprised the hell out of me. I HATED that movie.

Yeah, Im pulling for Giamatti, but your right, Clooney could sneak in and swipe it.

Yeah, she was at Sundance recently....Best Week Ever on VH1 interviewed her and asked what movies she was excited about seeing there...she basically said she was there to party only. I bet Redford rolled over in his grave. She is such an idiot, but she looks good naked.

Brokeback will get 8 or 9 nominations tomorrow. (And it won't win any acting awards--maybe Michelle, but even that's a long shot--but it'll win every other award it's up for... for a total of six Oscars, including BP, director, adapted screenplay and cinematography.)

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 12:14 PM

I'm not so sure Brokeback Mountain will win Screenplay. It's going up against Capote.

Capote won the USC Scripter Award, which is probably the 3rd highest writing award behind the WGA and Oscar. BM wasn't in the final 2 slots. Syriana was the other choice. The WGA's are Saturday night. Whomever wins that is likely the frontrunner.

Last year's WGA winners, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sideways, both went on to take the Oscar.

Mr. Cinema 01-30-06 01:22 PM

Tomorrow should be fun to watch. The Academy usually has 1 surprise pick in at least 1 of the major categories. I hope that happens tomorrow, just to shake things up a bit. Something like A History of Violence for Best Picture. I do think Cronenberg will get a Director nod.

Do we know what (if any) channel will carry this live? I think I saw some of the morning news shows cut in with it, but I thought maybe E! or TV Guide would have a lil pre-hype and reactions.

No mention of TV coverage here: http://www.oscars.org/78academyawards/noms.html
