Overall positive reviews from both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, each with what appear to be very minor spoilers.

The Variety review specifically mentions that "certain aspects of previous entry's storyline have been conveniently or oddly ignored," so kgrogers1979 isn't the only one pretending that V doesn't exist.

Got two enthusiastic thumbs up from Roeper and Aisha Tyler (had spoilers). They commented that Stallone directed the movie just right, and was seemingly aware of how poorly it would come off if he did get it right.

I was going to see this movie no matter what, but it's nice to hear guys like Roeper giving it thumbs up. That Aisha is a real cutie. I wish Ebert was better to review it.

...I still think if Roger ends up retiring, Aisha would be the best replacement. Might be a little hard to take serious at times, but she's just fun to listen to.

But yeah, to prevent getting off topic: The movie had a lot going against it, it's prevailed pretty damn well so far. When I first heard it was getting positive test screenings (before the trailer), I was surprised, the trailer was another surprise.

I agree, the streetfight in Rocky 5 sucked, the fight in Rocky 4 was great

The fight in Rocky 4 wasn't realistic either. Drago was supposed to have such power that he could literally kill a man in just a few hits. But yet, Rocky somehow manages to last 10-12 rounds (not sure how long the fight lasted) without being smashed into a quivering pile of mashed potatoes.

That's Rocky's thing! He takes a beating that no normal man would survive, tiring out his opponent in the process, then comes back to win the fight.

Rocky IV was cheesy, cheesy goodness.

Well, none of the fights in any of the Rocky movies are very realistic. Not only could no fighter last against some of those blows, but any half-decent referee would stop a fight where one guy was taking so much punishment.

Anyway, I'm officially excited to see this one.

Yeah, I love the Rocky Movies, but I've never confused them with real boxing. It's just a metaphor for working hard in RL.

I always thought the first fight between Rocky and Apollo was somewhat realistic. Wasn't a real life boxing fight the inspiration for the movie? I thought that there was a real life underdog fighter that fought against Muhammad Ali and went the distance like Rocky did against Apollo. It wasn't until the sequels that the fights started getting silly. Although, Rocky's first fight against Clubber Lang was realistic IMO. Clubber beat the shit out of him and Rocky did not hang on long. He was KOed in the second round, unlike his other fights where he gets his ass kicked and keeps coming back like the Energizer bunny.

It's GOT to be better than Rocky V, I guess...

After seeing the trailer it is definately something I want to see, probably in the theater, a rarity for me nowadays. I would not be surprised if the this one does some better then expected box office.
