• scott shelton • At least STAR TREK nerds are kind. das |
Any passionate group of fans can get snippy, snooty, defensive, or jerk-ish.
I'm definitely no "Whedonite," but I feel rather passionately about both Firefly and Serenity. If other people feel the same way, awesome. If they don't, that's perfectly cool. But to knock the movie sight unseen and try to talk people out of supporting it ... tacky. |

Wanting it to fail and taunting the fans, though, is pretty weak. das I see a lot of taunting here too. |
Going to see it in a couple of hours. I have never seen Buffy or Angel and only started watching Firefly on the recommendation of a friend. I love the show and went into panic mode when I realized that SciFi wasn't going to be done with the episodes before the movie came out. Fortunately, I was able to pick it up at the library and watched the last episodes last night. I love the mix of this show and hope to see more movies after this.

Though I wonder if it's low screen count will hurt much. It's only on like 2100 screens. Either or, I'm off to see it now. |
Nice diss with the Dukes of Hazzard reference. No I will not see Serenity. I will try to see a History of Violence, which looks like a far superior film.
Why the internet nerds are grasping onto this movie is beyond me. |

Why the internet nerds are grasping onto this movie is beyond me. Just because one does not get the attraction to something like Firefly doesnt mean you are nerd. |

Why the internet nerds are grasping onto this movie is beyond me. I guess that is hard to grasp when you decide what movies to see based on what trailer looks better. |
Just some frame of reference:
I saw this at a local mid-sized theater, 7:30 pm showing. The theater was about 80% full, and from listening to people around me, I guess about 1/3 were unfamiliar with the show. A family of 4 with 2 teenage kids was in front of me and asked, "so this is like some sci-fi show or something?" I ran into them afterwards, and they loved it. Talking with the manager of the theater, the 10:00 pm showing was about half sold as I was leaving (9:30ish). This isn't the big theater in the area, but it's not tiny either, so I suspect it's a decent gauge. The manager also indicated that it was a really slow night, but A History of Violence was doing pretty well, and Into the Blue was bombing. das |

Like you aren't an internet nerd also... |
I didn't know who Joss Whedon was until I saw some buzz about this movie, and I haven't seen any of his shows, and I am having a hard time thinking of the last time I had this much fun at an action/adventure type of movie. I was beginning to think the only movies I could still have a really good time at were raunchy comedies. I know there were inside jokes and comments that flew over my head as someone unfamiliar with the show, but they were not done in a way that took me out of the movie - who says I have to understand everything a character is saying, like I'm some omnipotent observer? I had a feeling I was in the minority in my theater, but I hope that more outsiders like me will seek this movie out. The bottom line is that I feel bad for someone who wouldn't feel like it was not only worth it, but a treat.

Like you aren't an internet nerd also... No shit. I may not find Rocky Horror Picture show to be the best of the best. But I wont be dissing the cult following of it simply because it's strange to me. |
I went to see GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED again tonight (a fantastic film nobody here is talking about), and I peeked inside a 7pm SERENITY screening. It was a good sized theater (400-500 seats), and only had about 50-100 people in it. I was shocked.
Maybe it was a fluke. |

Maybe it was a fluke. I sure hope it was. The theater I was in was smaller, maybe only 150 to 200, but it was 80 to 90 percent full, of which everyone was clapping and singing praise at the end. No idea how many were previous fans, though. |
I saw the 7:30 p.m. show at the Hollywood 24 Regal in Atlanta tonight, and it was packed! They put up some line barriers for the Browncoats to keep their position in line (being in lines seems to be a necessary component to all things Firefly/Serenity in these parts).

My wife and I are going to see Serenity tomorrow.
We just finished the series last night on DVD, and while my wife was VERY skeptical at the beginning, she ended up loving the series and was bummed that there weren't any more episodes to watch. I'd like to see the movie do well enough to justify a sequel, but I'm not counting on it. My wife asked me if the movie did well would they bring the series back - I don't think that will happen (unless the Sci Fi Channel is willing to put up enough money to bankroll the show). I'm just looking forward to seeing a really good, entertaining movie tomorrow. |
Going to the 10 PM show tonight. I've got four eps left to watch to stay up to date on the season, but I don't think I'll have the time today.
|
I just called one of my sisters to ask her if she wanted to see it this weekend, and I stressed the importance of going now rather than later. We were on the phone, but I could practically hear her rolling her eyes--apparently she'd just gotten off the phone with one of our other sisters who'd told her the same thing. Yes, we're a family of geeks, but we'll be there. :D

worth seeing--I did. definitely worth seeing. Even Mal is funnier than Han solo.
|
Saw it this afternoon; seeing it again tonight!

I cannot help but wonder how a movie with about 25% of the critics liking it can trounce a legitimatley good movie with over 80% approval ratings.

(Hate to be a jerk, but I'm freaking THRILLED to see Into the Blue open so poorly.) And if Serenity can break $12m, I believe Uni can call that an opening weekend success. I was hoping for more, but oh well; I'll still be purchasing the DVD. :D |
