Lemme go out and a limb and tell you a secret. There's not gonna be a sequel. Never. Ever. Not gonna happen. I'll get a sitcom with a chimp before that happens.

There's lots of movies that people would have loved sequels to but I don't see threads about them.

Maybe there will, maybe there won't. It's not going to stop my enthusiasm for the show or the movie. I've seen the movie twice. I think it's great and I think people should see it. One of the reasons there is even a movie is because "fanboys" care so much.

Of course there won't be a sequel. Just like they would never, EVER make a movie out of a cancelled show that lasted less than 1 season.

What they have already done is much harder than making a sequel to Serenity. Stop acting like you know everything.

If this film breaks even, there's going to be no doubt in hell that Universal greenlights a sequel. Universal only gave Whedon a chance because at the moment, they're in dire need of a franchise and they believe that this may help them out. It's no wonder why Universal has Whedon in a contract to do two more Serenity films if this one is a success.

But at the moment, nobody knows how this film is going to do. It could tank, it could do well, it could be a blockbuster. Reviews at the moment are mostly positive, but how will the mainstream react? I guess we'll see when estimates come in on Saturday.

Groucho 09-29-05 04:45 PM

The real indicator of whether this gets a sequel won't be rooted in box office receipts (unless they're unusually HUGE), but on sales of the DVD.

RyoHazuki 09-29-05 04:57 PM

So do any Serenity fans wanna make a bet regarding the box office receipts? I say the film doesn't cross 15 mil. Any takers?

Do you mean 15 mil opening or total? For opening, i wouldn't make that bet because i would consider 15 million to be very good opening for a movie that cost 40 million to make.

RyoHazuki 09-29-05 05:07 PM

Yeah, I didn't notice that the budget was that low. Alright, 10 mil or less opening weekend.

Thats a fair amount for a bet. I'm not going to bet money over the internet though, not that my broke ass even has any. I hope/think that it will make more than 10 million opening weekend and remain consistent like the 40 Year Old Virgin.

RocShemp 09-29-05 06:26 PM

Saw the film today and plan to go again tommorrow. If not, I'll see it again Saturday and hopefully Sunday as well.

OldBoy 09-29-05 06:30 PM

i'll wait till i get it burned on a DVD-R...

...just kidding!

If Land of the Dead can open on $10 million, so can Serenity. Universal pushed that film to June at the last minute with barely four weeks of complete advertising (trailer -> poster -> television ads -> release).

Serenity has been being pushed by the studio since late April and has a lot more word of mouth built up than Land. It also helps that Serenity has a PG-13 rating (and not an R).

Shannon Nutt 09-29-05 06:47 PM

I'll take the over $15 million this weekend bet. I'm guessing it will be closer to 17 or 18 million. And if it makes over $20 million this weekend, there WILL be a sequel, no matter what the fall-off is after that.

If F'ing "Sky Captain" can make $15 million opening weekend (Sept. of 2004), I know Serenity can beat that!

I too, will take this bet. Serenity makes more than $15M this weekend, yeah...I'm in. I'm guessing $18M+

I agree with you on all accounts. Will there be sequels? If it does well, yes. Universal would gladly jump on a franchise piece. Especially one that already has a built in audience. If they could make a tidy profit on this and push it for their sister company, Sci-Fi, then I see no reason why they wouldn't. Universal didn't do this for Joss as any sort of favor. They did it for themselves.

What has already been done is leaps beyond what anyone would have ever expected.

Ketamine 09-29-05 08:06 PM

Shitty poll. Need more options. I am interested in it but haven't seen the TV series and won't be seeing it until it comes out on DVD after I have found time to watch Firefly.

zombiezilla 09-29-05 08:19 PM

I'm staying home to watch DVDs rather than pay Hollywood for stuff that disinterests me (just the releases this weekend).

The point of the poll is to get people to see it THIS weekend - pretty much the ONLY weekend that counts as far as UNIVERSAL's commitment to this franchise is concerned.

So
a) you'll see it this weekend
b) you won't

Yes, you may catch it a few weeks from now, on DVD, on cable, whatever...but that's really not the point of the poll. The point of the poll is to see who will go out and try and make this movie #1 on opening weekend. If that is done, then fans have done their job.

rkndkn 09-29-05 08:29 PM

I took the day off tomorrow mainly to see "Serenity" early on opening day. I'll fit in "A History of Violence" tomorrow, also, or on Saturday.

Rockmjd23 09-29-05 08:30 PM

I'm seing Dukes again.

reverie 09-29-05 08:44 PM

So, I know how excited I am to be going tomorrow.. but I'm wondering if I should pre-order tickets..? There'll be 21 of us going to a theatre that's only showing it five times a day. Myself and a friend think we should pre-order, but my wife doesn't on the matter of the extra $1 and that she thinks that we could get stuck if not everyone shows (I don't think we'd have a problem with people sticking us with the bill though.. I'm surprised she thinks that of our friends!). Any thoughts?

And I'll take the bet on $10 mil. Sky Captain seemed to have a much bigger push to me.. I could be wrong though. I never saw it.

RocShemp 09-29-05 09:20 PM

Why not pre-order for you and your wife (and whoever you know for certain will be there) and the rest buy their tickets while waiting on line? That way you and your wife can go in and reserve seats for your friends.
