Well, I have my Fandango ticket for a Friday night showing, mainly because I do want to see it with a theatre full of Firefly fans, call it a pop cultural event that I willingly embrace, I see no shame in it, either. And for the naysayers, well, I hope they find something they can support willingly and with some vigor as well because life's more fun when you find something worthwhile to support.

Bcolon 09-29-05 10:15 PM

I will be there on Saturday. Damn brother-n-law picked Friday to get married! Bastich! ;)

mdc3000 09-29-05 10:22 PM

How about all you people who are going to see INTO THE BLUE buy tickets for SERENITY and then just go see ITB instead...honestly, that won't hurt anyone. :) I'm a sucker for Jessica Alba too, but if I see it, i'm checking it out either after the weekend, or doing the proposed scam detailed above.

As the early reviews start to filter in, Serenity holds at 80% (32/40) Fresh (83% from the Cream). While not overly meaningful, it's still a good sign that viewers -- many of whom almost certainly know nothing of the series (e.g. Ebert, who is a movie elitist when it comes to television) -- seem to be leaving the theater with a positive response. I'm still very skeptical about the chances of success, but good reviews certainly can't hurt.

Nevermind. I found the answer I wanted in this thread (about whether viewing without having seen the series was wise). Ahh, the power of reading.

I'll be watching it on Saturday.

Shannon Nutt 09-30-05 04:38 AM

Roger Ebert gives Serenity 3 out of 4 stars!

Mild spoilers, so read at your own risk:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...VIEWS/50926004

Oh, and I love this quote from the New York Times (who gave the movie an A-!)

Scene for scene, Serenity is more engaging and certainly better written and acted than any of Mr. Lucas's recent screen entertainments.

Scott Weinberg 09-30-05 05:53 AM

Seen the flick twice already ... and I'll be buying a ticket on Saturday night. :)

I heard a radio interview with Nathan F., and he said that if Serenity can break $15m in its opening weekend, then Universal will be "VERY happy."

I also remember reading, a while back, that if the movie could do around $70-$80m worldwide, then Uni would climb on for the back-to-back sequel approach. I make no predictions, as I'm horribly bad at weekend box office prognostication, but as a fan, it'd make me very happy to see Serenity end the weekend in first place. (I'm of the opinion that MirrorMask and A History of Violence are VERY good films, and certainly worthy of your nine bucks, but Serenity hits me in a personal way, and man oh man would I like a sequel or two.)

But I do agree with what was said earlier in this thread; I don't think we'll know, one way or another, about a sequel until after Serenity hits DVD.

But all of that's just business-end hoo-hah. I freaking loved this movie, and I hope you guys do, too. Veterans of Firefly will adore the movie, and I'd say a strong percentage of newcomers will find a whole lot to like. And a lot of those folks will leave the multiplex itchin' to check out the Firefly DVDs. ;)

I will be at Serenity on Saturday for sure.

Point me to the Jessica Alba porn and I'll not only rent, I'll buy.

adinar 09-30-05 09:53 AM

Not for another week :(

As much as my wife & I are *dying* to see this, I committed myself this entire weekend to helping the residents of Slidell clean up from Hurricane Katrina & Rita. And with my wife working Monday & Tuesday nights, I probably won't make it to the theater until next weekend. Which means a whole week of avoiding spoilers & discussions. ;)

You, sir, are worse than Hitler.

gcribbs 09-30-05 11:33 AM

I will be seeing this tonight.

I figure if I want to see Alba in a bikini. A dvd with freeze frame and zoom is better than a movie theater anyway :o

If F'ing "Sky Captain" can make $15 million opening weekend (Sept. of 2004), I know Serenity can beat that!

Alright. Serenity tops $15 million, you can make a signature for me that I must keep for a month and I'll paypal you $1.50.

Wait a minute, now. Don't be so cavalier with my sig spot.

Scott Weinberg 09-30-05 01:13 PM

I say the flick breaks $16m this weekend. If I'm wrong ... I'll write my DVD reviews naked for 2 weeks. :)

Silt 09-30-05 01:20 PM

Local radio show here in Vegas has it's supposed "movie guy in the know" on this morning (like every Friday morning)...and he said he was told by a Universal exec that there will only be a sequel if Serenity makes at least $80 million.

dadaluholla 09-30-05 01:52 PM

I say it will break $15mil this weekend easily. People are seriously underestimating the fanbase for this show.

I think it's the other way around, the fan-base may be overestimating its own size. Just because a good chuck of internet people like it doesn't mean that works in the real world. If it makes good bank it'll be because it appealed to people outside of the "fan-base" and by a significant margin.

I also get the sense that with alot of prerelease sneaks of the film, most of the die hard fanbase has already seen this - I am being skeptical that once this movie gets released into the mainstream - its gonna not perform as well as everyone thinks it is.

mdc3000 09-30-05 02:13 PM

Pixy, your sig makes me want to cry -ohbfrank-

Giles, you have a point that a lot of the fanbase has seen it, but everyone I know (my self included) who already saw it, is seeing it AGAIN this weekend...heck, i saw it MONTHS ago...another viewing is certainly in order for most browncoats I've talked to.

Two tickets to Into the Blue please.

Generalize much???? I'm not a comic book geek, I have a life, I have a significant other and I have a dog so what's your point really?
Can I generalize, since you are going to see a movie with very little plot and girl in a bathing suit that you dont get very little female companionship?:)

I'm taking a couple of people who have not seen it and have been telling people at work so...

It's pretty clear it will appeal to them if they see it (reviews from newbies are mostly positive). The question is whether they'll see it or not. I tend to think not, partly because the TV spots suck and partly because of no recognizeable stars. The movie is legitimately good, Firefly fan or not, but I'm just not convinced it's on the radar for the average movie-goer. My co-workers wouldn't know it existed had I not talked about it. If it succeeds, I'd expect it to be more from word of mouth after opening weekend.

Wanting it to fail and taunting the fans, though, is pretty weak.

I'm there this weekend...I'm banking on a 21m opening. Watch and see.

Well, so are the fans (not you) dumping on people who don't like it for honest reasons. There are examples of that everywhere today.

The Whedonphreaks can get pretty mean. At least STAR TREK nerds are kind.
