I am waiting on the "I Pledge to See SERENITY This Weekend (10/7-10/9) Poll"

Let's go!

Serenity might have done better if it didn't offer so many free screenings. ;)

Jackskeleton 10-03-05 03:37 PM

Then how would they have made that marketing campagin of suggesting the theatres sold out so quickly and what not.

Dr. DVD 10-03-05 03:54 PM

They could fudge. It's not like lying about a movie to get it buzz is new to a marketing department you know.

FWIW, while it's nice to see a lot of positive reviews from critics, I notice that a good amount of them are doing something that isn't going to win the movie any fans. It seems the trend is to compare it to Star Wars and then bash the PT as being stupid. One review actually went as far as to call the PT a "for dorks only" series. Now, I loved Serenity, but I also liked the PT okay as well (II and III at least, TPM needs to be forgotten). Saying the movie is better than the recent Star Wars offerings is okay, but going so far to insult those who liked it is not a good tactic.

What free screenings? I must have missed out on those. All the ones I knew about you had to pay to get a ticket for.

Stu 17 10-03-05 07:37 PM

I'm sure all the free screenings had people there that were hardcore enough to see the movie this weekend as well. It's not like they were 2 weeks ago, they were back in the springtime. That's long enough to justify seeing it again for most fans.

Let's go!

I'll cast my early vote for going on Sunday! It'll only be my second time, but that'll make 4 times I've been in the theatre this year. Plus, I needed the week gap to recover. ;)

The screenings in April, May, and June were definitely not free. Only the screenings in September might have been free.

I saw 2 preview screenings and also took in one weekend screening (because I was busy on Saturday and could only go Friday night), mainly because I wanted to see it with a big group of Browncoats, and I wanted to see the finished product with music/sound in place, and slightly cleaned up special effects as well.

to be fair, I saw the film three times for free. But that shouldn't be an issue anyways because it was a test screening and every film gets something along those lines. Just another step to make sure they know how to market it.

Dr. DVD 10-05-05 01:44 PM

That's strange people had to pay for the adance screenings. In my neck of the woods, unless it's a sneak preview that's advertised for a specific film, most advance showings are done through free passes distributed at places throughout the community. More often than not, it's for movies like Into the Blue or Stealth where I think the marketing department is counting on people coming out liking the flick just because they showed it for free.
Back on topic, I will try to take in another Serenity showing if time permits. Football season in my area makes me have to work most weekends and any weekday I get off is spent doing laundry. :(

These "Advance Screenings" weren't for critics. They were for the fans and to promote the film in a new way. Nothing's ever really been done this way before, and it made perfect sense to charge for tickets. There were many typical "free screenings" in the weeks leading up to the premiere. The ones most fans saw, though, were something different.

I had intended to go last Sunday but it wasn't playing locally for me. 2 theatres and 13 screens in town and none of them with Serenity as an option- or, for that matter, History Of Violence. I'm hoping that's not the case this weekend but if it is I'll make the 30 mile drive to the next town to see it.
