I just got back from seeing this one, and it was way better than I thought it would be. It was far more disturbing, dark, and seriously freaky...almost to the point of actually being "scary", than I ever could have imagined. This movie hit me harder than most movies that are billed as true horror.

As much as Tom Cruise pisses me off lately, I just can't hate the guy on screen, I can't. I admit, I went into this WANTING to hate him in this movie, but about a second into it I was already so involved with the story, that I forgot about my hate for him, and realized that I love almost, if not all, of his flicks.

Dakota Fanning was great, but yes she did piss me off a couple of times. The entire plot point of her

Spoiler:
being claustrophobic, that method used to calm her, etc...

seemed pointless to me, and could have been elminated completely, which would have helped keep her from being so annoying. I didn't really see the point in it, since it didn't pay off or build to anything. I'll tell you what though, this girl continues to impress the hell out of me. Put her in more and more films Hollywood! Stretch her talents just a bit more, and nothing will be able to hold her back. A few more roles that really push her, and she'll be set in stone for sure, and it's going to happen.

My favorite line in the movie came from Fanning herself:

Spoiler:
Is it the terrorists!?

by itself, it's not a great line or anything. However, coming from a child, in that situation, and just her fantastic intense delivery of the line...it really hit me hard, very hard.

I had no idea that
Spoiler:
Morgan Freeman
and
Spoiler:
Tim Robbins
were in this film, so it was a nice surprise to see them both show up in one way or another. I'm glad I purposely didn't read anything at all about this film before I saw it.

I even thought Justin Chatwin did a great job as Robbie, I believed that he could actually be Cruise's son. However:

Spoiler:
I hated that SS made it so that Robbie showed up at the end, that really pissed me off and almost ruined that final scene for me. A huge fireball, or whatever that was, destroyed an entire military unint (and tons of other people), but this moron lived through it...without any injury, AND made it home before his father and sister (yes, I know they were sorta held up there for a while). His showing up there at the end took away from the bitter-sweet ending, and I hated it.

I'm at least glad that SS didn't have it where Cruise's ex's husband was killed, leading to Cruise getting back with her at the end.

Ugh, but why bring the son back!?

I really enjoyed it, the two hours just flew by, and most of the film had me in a ball of nerves, just like the characters. Like I said before, this one got to me than most horror movies, and that's exactly what I was hoping for.

I saw the movie and I enjoyed it, but the experience was damaged by the morons in the theater.

There were these two guys a couple of rows back that laughed loudly at just about everything that happened in the movie. For example, they apparently thought the scene showing

I agree with G. Kleinman's review. It was an incredibly visceral experience but it was so unsatisfying.

Dakota Fanning was okay. Not Haley Joel Osment but also not Jake Lloyd.

The ending wasn't that bad honestly. Only people who are completely ignorant of the story won't understand.

I don't mind the ending itself.
Spoiler:
I just mind the sudden reappearance of the son. It's ridiculous as he clearly should have been dead.

My theater was filled with a massive field trip of 10 - 13 year olds. ALl they did was talk random nonesense and throw popcorn at each other all throughout the movie. The only bit of peace I had was during a brief cell phone incident. Some guys cell phone rang and he politely rushed to turn it off. Suddenly one of the little jackasses starting saying "¡apaga el celular!" over and over again. This was already an hour into the film and I had enough of all those damned kids (asking one of the employees to send someone in to get rid of some of the louder ones was, sadly, fruitless - I assume because the other screen room across from mine was in the same situation as the field trip was very massive). My voice doesn't boom nearly as much as my dad but there are times when I come close. So very pissed off I yelled louder than anyone in the damn theater "¡callate!" and most the kids in the theater, including the main offender, practically shat themselves. The peace only lasted like 5 - 10 minutes but after that another loud sequence in the film kicked in so I was, mostly, able to ignore them.

just got back in from seeing this, i thought it was great. amazing special effects- really terrifying-

I didnt ever read the book, can someone elaborate on the red stuff? And also can someone elaborate on why the tripods stopped working, or why they died ? I thought it was too vague in the movie.

Spoiler:
The spores were their means of terraforming.

The aliens died due to the germs and microbes on earth that humans have mostly built a tolerance or immunity against.

Just got back from a showing. Loved this movie. Agreeing with some earlier posts, the people complaining about the ending are totally clueless.

I loved the tripods. I loved the sound as well. Terrific effects. My favorite part, which I'm sure will be others, was not only the first showing of the ship, but the time leading up to it. That was very intense and it kept building the curiousity. I also loved the look of the movie. Very hazy. But I expect nothing but the best from Janusz Kaminski.

This was a very dark and disturbing sci-fi movie. No doubt about it. Which is what it needed to be. My only complaint was that it could have used a little more action near the front. Or at least some extentions of scenes. Other than that, I'm very impressed. I don't see this film doing under $200 million. It has a very good chance of doing over that because I don't see another sure fire hit the rest of Summer.

Will be seeing this Friday afternoon. Do you see this getting good word of mouth or negative from J6P?

I am glad they didn't go into detail about that. It left us, the viewers, in the same situation as all of the people in the movie. This film, unlike most films I've ever seen, really made me feel like I was in the movie myself. The sounds, the confusion, the tension, it was all great.

I just got back and I agree with everything you said. I loved this movie! It was a GRAND film. A big over the top flick that just rocked. The first part of the invasion was incredible. The build up, the start, the means of invasion once things got rolling, they all added to the feelling of dispair. The sound of the Tripod alerts were awesome. I'll be honest in that I didn't like the Alien design too much but hey, that was minor compared to all the pluses.

I don't know why people are bitching about the end but hey, that's their opinion and it doesn't have to agree with mine. It wasn't whimpy at all. People are just harder to please these days....

Let me say again that that red shit was just nasty. It creeped me out to no end.

Saw it this afternoon and while I liked it overall, I was a little peeved about the end, but I also didn't like the opening.

Spoiler:

The opening completely gives away the ending. From the very first scene I said "yup, they're gonna die from bacteria, just like the original." and that is fine, there was just no reason to give it away. I was glad that it wasn't Tom figuring out how to kill them, though he did have his moment about the shields... it would have died without the army butting in.

Ok, another point I just realized was a bit off, Cruise killing Robbins. It didn't matter, they found him anyway... just a little later. He could have just knocked him out and left or something... why make such a big deal of having to kill the guy.

And the ending itself was fine, but I didn't like the son coming back... or rather, I didn't like that they didn't explain it... They show Tom and the girl going through all of this crap to get to Boston, and then its like "oh look your son is ok too!" If they would have just shown some scenes of him getting home, I would have been fine with it.

Visually, the movie was great, and I thought the alien design was good...
Spoiler:
...perhaps a bit too close to the ID4 aliens, but oh well.

I thought Minority Report was a better film overall, but WotW was defiantely good.

I found this movie terrifying, but completely unsatisfying.

Spoiler:
Why did the aliens have to enter the basement after the probe tentacle? If the purpose of their conquest was extermination, why didn't they just use multiple tripods with some sort of strategy to completely obliterate WHOLE areas. I understand they were "harvesting" humans for part of their terraformation, but they could have placed the humans into pens, and farmed them like cattle. I think Speilberg and Koepp should have taken some liberties into making the story more cohesive, if they were so dead set on making this movie terrifying, by only allowing the viewer to know as much info as Ray and his family knew. I also don't think we ever needed to see the Aliens, and it just reminded me of the scene in Signs.

Just got back. I have to say the movie is visually incredible-- you really have to go see it in a good theater, don't wait for the dvd. Apart from that, I think it could have been better. The plot felt thin to me. I'm trying to imagine how it would hold up in 10 years, since basically it's the family running from here to there throughout the whole movie. And about the ending:

Spoiler:
About 20 minutes before the end, they're in the basement and it's raining blood outside-- it looks like there's no chance in hell of mankind even leaving a dent on them. Then all of a sudden they start dieing, and Cruise makes it home with his daughter to see that his whole family is just fine. The last 20 minutes felt surreal. It's like the movie pulled a 180 at that point and the real spielberg came back to finish it off.

Definitely worth seeing though. BTW, didn't the whole basement scene feel similar to the raptors in the kitchen one in Jurassic Park?

That foreshadowing didn't bother me but do agree about not having Tomcat figure it all out.

I disagree. I think one of the points of this film was to show the utter breakdown of society and otherwise decent people. It's showed just how far Tom was willing to go to keep his girl alive and it fit well with the film's overall theme.

FWIW, Jurassic Park was something I liked a lot when it was in the theaters, but when I look back at it, I realize that it too is thin on plot and overall doesn't seem to hold up as the CGI, while still impressive, isn't unique to it anymore.

Did anyone think Steven had this terrifying a movie in him? WOW!!!

I agree that he did get away with an R-rated film, but Michael Jordan got away with a lot of push-offs and fouls in his career.

I was only hoping for it to be scary as hell, and I think it delivered in a big way. This movie is certainly not for small kids.

Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning were both good. It had a touch of humor on occasion too.

The ending wasn't so bad either, what else could they possibly have done with it.

My favorite scene was when Dakota Fanning was standing in front of the river, and they shot it from well behind her. That was just fu**ing freakish and horrifying.

I thought it was damn good, very brutal. Totally immerses you in the film with the tension, and there's really no wasted scene. I really don't mind Dakota Fanning, I think she played her role well. The ending just sort of came, and it wasn't as satisfying as I would have wanted. But looking back this makes some sense. . .the film isn't really about plot when I think about it, but more about survival and just getting through what was happening, so I guess I'm more forgivable towards plot specifics that are questionable. Just the actual ending with the characters seemed . . . meh. Still, all in all it was very good, and I hope it does well at the box office.

Pretty much felt the same way on everything as you. I can totally see why people bitched about the ending but it didn't bother me.

My favorite film of the year, I thought it was absolutely phenomenal, just an incredible film & by FAR the best film Spielberg has made since Schindler's List & yes better than SPR, although it really isn't fair to compare the two. The film is a directing masterpiece IMO, & F' all of the trendy Cruise haters, he is phenomenal in this movie.

My only complaint was Fanning but I didn't let it bother me b/c I hated her in Man on Fire & almost always hate kids in movies, so I knew going in I wouldn't like her.

Just got back from seeing it. I know its been used a thousand times already but, the film is easily one of the most terrifying motion picture experiences I have had in years. I would have preferred a bit more exposition on
Spoiler:
What the Red roots were and how did they fit into the aliens plan for global conquest?

Spoiler:
I thought the whole coming up out of the earth and the water was excellent but if they were so advanced as to plant these devices millenia ago, why wait all this time to come back when there are people here rather than initially colonize and wipe out the humans before they populated the world in total?

Spoiler:
The ending was heavy on the lame side. I wanted to really see more of the aliens affected by disease.

Spoiler:
The whole thing with the son showing up at the end was the worst possible way they could have ended this thing. I would have preferred Cruise & Fanning arriving in Boston to find his wife alive but the husband and her parents very dead. Unfortunately, such was not the case.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. The look and sounds of the tripods were absolutely incredible.
