Perhaps, you are unhappy with Sean Penn's political stance, no?....as I could see that you place him with Michael Moore.

He wasn't talking about their acting ability, just how they feel the necessity to "inform" the public about their opinion on politics at the moment.

He was saying Errols came off like a prick when he got on stage, just like Sean Penn (last year moreso than this year) and Michael Moore.

There is a parallel.

Both Vietnam and the Iraqi war are not very popular in public opinion, but were forced on us by politicians.

Considering the President's approval ratings throughout the war and the publics specific approval of the war itself, I'm not sure what your talking about....

I agree he came across as egotistical, but I think he meant well.

As for comparing to Vietnam: I've been reading articles and newsbriefs the AP has been ignoring about reinstating the draft, and I must say I feel pretty scurred, being 20 and in my sophomore year of college. I don't know, I think something has to call the rest of the country's attention to just how imperialistic we've become. Sorry for the :crap:

Yeah you'll have to wait a few more years for that one.

When the media is as slanted as it is right now don't count on this happenning, but if you look around the internet carefully enough you can find the real truth.

His approval rating was about 80% or so when the war started.

I'd have to say that approval rating plummeted after no WMD were found in either planning or implementation, and the fact our soldiers are still dying after the war is "over".

Last I heard it was more along the lines of 40%~ now.

My God was that the worst Oscars I possibly have ever watched. Totally and completely unfunny and uninteresting. Here's to hoping that next years is better and has some better movies to root for. :(

I concur.

A lot of those laughs at Crystal were more out of pity than actual humor.

precisely....a rating based on "facts" indicating the existence of WMD. Now, that we all know that such were not present...ratings are....(flash)different.

mllefoo 02-29-04 11:44 PM

Jim Carrey looked like a chemo patient. Why would he shave all his hair like that?

I was disappointed to see Johnny Depp lose the award because I think he's a terrific actor and I'd definitely not kick him out of bed for eating crackers. Oh well, Sean Penn's a local boy, so I guess it's good he gets his due.

December 2003:

63% approve of Bush's foreign policy (up from 53% at the beginning of the month)
Overall approval rating: 59% (up from 53% two weeks ago)
70% of respondants believe Iraq was important to the war on terror, not a distraction

February 2003

49% saying it was worth going to war in Iraq and 49% saying it was not worth going to war. This is the first time that Gallup has found support for the war in Iraq to be below 50%

Slipping, but no where near the 30-something % Johnson and Nixon enjoyed during Vietnam.

I don't want to get into a whole thing with you, but what the Hell are you trying to prove?

Someone said they don't see the similarities between Vietnam and Iraq, and I said there are vague similarities, they were both unpopular.

Just because we were lied to and it was popular UNTIL we found out the truth doesn't make it a popular war.

In 20 years, this war won't be remembered as "the war everyone wanted", but as "the war we were lied to to start that continued because of politics".

Glad to see Master and Commander pick up a couple of awards.

I wish the Sheridans would have won instead of Sofia.

An upset by Depp would have been hilarious, but I just had a feeling it would come down to Penn or Murray - too bad Bill didn't win - it might have been the most interesting and humorous part of the evening.

That damn show is too freaking long.

Dubya 02-29-04 11:48 PM

I was glad Sean Penn got in the WMD comment since he took so much criticism for his stance against the war, but more importantly it was nice to see him win a well deserved oscar.

I don't get the whole "we will wait and reward LOTR after the final one comes out" thinking. By that rationale should they have not given "The Godfather" best picture and just waited until <ahem> the third one? ;) It seems like the fix was in for this picture three years ago. It didn't matter if the second coming of Citizen Kane was released last year, LOTR was not going to be denied.

Probably because he's playing this guy:

As for all the political shit, take it to the Other forum, y'all.

AHEM.

Please stop doing this :crap: to this message thread! Take the politics to the Other forum, please?

But getting back on-topic, I was just AMAZED that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King took 11 out of 11 Oscars. -eek- You'd think they'll give some of the techical awards to other movies, but....

I believe this may be the first time that a movie nominated for so many Oscars took them all.

Depp deserves an Oscar, but not for "pirates".

And Bill would have been such a worthy (and ratings wise, entertaining) winner.

Yes, the show went on far too long. Some catagories should have been on the Sciences and Technology Academy Awards 2 weeks ago. Some of them shouldn't have been presented at all (MTV takes the lesser awards early and not part of the main show, a better idea).

I was waiting for a "best catering service" award.

No one knew there would be a second Godfather picture, let alone a third one.

Personally, I think RotK was the best of the three and a good case could be made for every award it won, just on the basis of that film itself. Furthermore, how could it not have been nominated for Cinematography?

pro-bassoonist 02-29-04 11:51 PM

what I was indicating is that giving president's ratings as a premise to base your political parallel on...well, seems a rather poor choice, BECAUSE at the time the polls were conducted the nation was under the assunption that WMD were indeed present.

So, I dont see what is the problem if some of the actors tonight chose to express their opinion (or give a hint) regarding what actually happened. To say that Sean Penn is arrogant because of this is rather...well, a poor choice. In the context of this statement I dont think that anyone could say that there isn't a parallelbetween Iraq and Vietnam- both unpopular wars. That's all.

With other words I actually wanted to support your claim :)

covenant 02-29-04 11:52 PM

I expected LOTR to maybe get Best Director and maybe Best Movie...but all the other stuff should of been spread out a little amongst the other movies. (even tho LOTR did great in those categories also).

In a way I feel bad for all the other good movies that should have gotten something out of the deal besides: "nominated for an academy award on it's dvd cover.

Right. Titanic won 11 out of 14 and Ben-Hur won 11 out of 12.

getting back to the "Fog of War" while the message retains that wars (specifically the Vietnam War) can be manufactured for the gains of other countries and governments (ie, the US). I thought "The Weather Underground" was a far more powerful movie, which in my opinion was a better overall "F**k the government" film, that demonstrated the pros and cons of civilian outcry against US bullying. Should be suitable viewing to the recent fascist tactics and characterists of what Bush has become.

I thought Penn outacted Murray. Perhaps it was because Murray's performance was SO good, but I kind of felt like he was playing himself in the movie. I mean he's kind of washed up, hasn't done many movies lately, and I could see him doing ads or something. I don't know, perhaps he just convinced me with his performance that that is how he really is.

I totally agree! I loved The Weather Underground and thought it happened (or perhaps was meant) to come at a very good time in terms of the political environment.
