So, I dont see what is the problem if some of the actors tonight chose to express their opinion (or give a hint) regarding what actually happened. To say that Sean Penn is arrogant because of this is rather...well, a poor choice. In the context of this statement I dont think that anyone could say that there isn't a parallelbetween Iraq and Vietnam- both unpopular wars. That's all.

I really don't see a point in your argument. I didn't say I approve or disapprove of Bush, yet you make it sound like I say "Well, since he's unpopular, I don't like him!" All I said was that Iraq and Vietnam are similar in popularity because someone said there is no similarity. But let's just drop it.

I said Sean Penn is arrogant because he's a typical Hollywood elitist. He feels the need to "educate" the people with his opinion, which he's entitled to, but the reality is this is the Academy Awards and not Das Politikal Open Mic Night. I'm not insulting him because I disagree, I'm insulting him because it's not his place to spew out his opinions like verbal diahhrea.

You won an award. Thank God, thank your family and friends. Thank the film crew.

Don't sit there and tell us about the world as you see it. This is the 76th Annual Academy Awards, not The O'Reilly Factor with you as host.

This is not what I was talking about at all. I was directing my remarks towards the people that criticized the actors that seem to have some active political stance.

So, let's just drop it. This is a night for films. I dont want to get into politics (AND I was not the one that brought up the war parallel, etc).

Cheers.

I'm not sure what is more odd, ROTK winning 11 Oscars or people posting during the Oscars. Are all you guys locked up alone in a room with a tv and a keyboard?

RotK...Furthermore, how could it not have been nominated for Cinematography?
it won the Visual Effects award if that's any concilation. The picture was more effects-driven than photography-driven anyhow.

There are these things called commercials and also long, boring stretches where no awards are given. :)

Giles 03-01-04 12:09 AM

no justing running in between the computer room and the den at all those commercial breaks, and the fact that one didn't really need to watch the show but listen to it.

Still, plenty of amazing shots both expansive and intimate. I just don't see how it was not one of the five best of the year.

FotR won for Cinematography. Was this one any less?

eXcentris 03-01-04 12:13 AM

Not watch? With all that cleavage? Blasphemy! :)

Giles, is that other documentary you mentionned on DVD?

Maybe that's why it did not get nominated because FotR already won it. In hindsight - if any of the three were to win the cinematography award, I'm glad Fellowship did. RotK was the worst-looking of the three, imo. There were plenty of films that looked better than RotK - I agreed w/ several that were nominated (for example: M&C; Cold Mountain).

well, I actually watched a good 6/8th of the show - the very end lost my attention.

I actually caught "The Weather Underground" at Visions Theatre last Friday. Not sure when the DVD is scheduled for release. And for the record my favourite docu film of last year was "My Architect".

I think it looked just as good as the other two (but TTT wasn't nominated either). I didn't say it should have won, just that it should have been nominated.

Although if it had been nominated, it probably would have won.

Edit: perhaps my above post might be interpreted to say that since FotR won, RotK should have also because I asked if it was any less. But I did not intend to imply that.

Giles 03-01-04 12:22 AM

hands down my favourite film for cinematography was "Girl with the Pearl Earring"

I'm a Lord of the Rings nuthugger and damm proud of it !

Giles 03-01-04 12:33 AM

what was up with that jab at Sandra Bullock being late comment (sound awards), that seemed very odd.

Giles 03-01-04 12:34 AM

and Liv, those earrings did not complent your glasses,

Giles 03-01-04 12:36 AM

the Blake Edwards stunt seemed slightly disturbing to watch, the camera reaction of the crowd made them seem equally perplexed by it.

Doctor Gonzo 03-01-04 12:45 AM

anyone know who the lead singer was who performed the nominated song from the triplets of belville?

You must not go in the sports forum often, it's a weekly event there (when the good sports are playing :) )

Myself, I have a TV card in my computer so while I'm working on my computer I watch tv in the corner, and since I'm already at my computer I might as well post. :)

He said 40 years ago we did ____...the parallel was supposed to be between the current situation and the situation near the start of the vietnam war, not between now and 1969 in vietnam. He was trying to say that we don't want this to turn into vietnam, not that the current campaign in iraq is just like vietnam.

I just looked around, since i saw Underground last fall, and I found this:

I guess you can already get it on DVD if you don't mind spending $265! Hah.

Mr. Self Destruct 03-01-04 01:34 AM

Well..my final thoughts on the Oscar's:
- Catherine Zeta-Jones is unbelievably hot, as were most of the women that presented
- I thought Bill Murray deserved the best actor award, since it will be awhile before he may get another chance
- The Bankie Edwards part was surprisingly interesting. Especially the part about the "FOES"--because even when competing at art school--it holds so true
- LOTR deserved its night
- The Triplets of Belville song was amazing--I gotta go see it since its playing around here (where can I hear it again?)
- I thought Liv Tyler looked even cuter with the glasses (but I really like the glasses look)
