I'd say LotR deserved maybe half of those awards. I knew it was a complete farce when it won best editing.

How could a movie where everyone universally agrees it's riddled with false endings that go on 20 minutes longer than it should?
...

Everybody doesn't agree with this. I thought the last 20 minutes were great. I knew how it was supposed to end and that's how it ended.

And the LotR sweep...well, if LotR was so frickin' great, how come it didn't sweep for the prior two movies?
Because they didnt treat the other two like they did with this one. They are treating this as a sum of all three. They didn't vote for those other two because they felt they can easily vote for them the following year. put off the vote so they could go for the next best thing

I thought Ben Kingsley deserved it but Sean was my #2. Way ahead of Murray.

I personally thought Ben Kingsly did a better acting job.

I'm chalking it up to lack of competition and complacency.

The Academy waited until the 3rd film to award the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Well deserved I'd say.

Oh, I'm sorry. Only the vast majority do.

Let me put it this way. It's got enough popular opinion to pretty much knock it out of contention to win.

I mean, I'm not the first person who has said that RotK had too many false endings and went on too long, am I?

covenant 02-29-04 11:22 PM

But does the false endings ruin the entire Trilogy? I think not....
Peter Jackson was simply giving the fans their moneys worth. Your not one of them, let it go.

sinister 02-29-04 11:22 PM

penn deserved it but to think depp didn't deserve one for fear and loathing is as bad as denzel beating out crowe 2 years ago. the actress category was weak this year.

DVDho78DTS 02-29-04 11:22 PM

"Is that my daughter in there!?! Is that my daughter in there!?!"

That line gives me chills when I hear it.

Not at all. I just think you're all wrong. :)

or even the fact that the story felt very trunscated when one is aware that an expanded edition is slated for video release later this year.

Howard Shore, best music, whatever, the music on the whole is the most flawed aspect for me.

drjay 02-29-04 11:25 PM

I am a huge fan or LotR, but I thought there were some other great films this year which were overlooked. Say what you will, but I thought Big Fish and 21 Grams should've been on the list for Best Picture. I think it was the right move for the Academy to wait till the 3rd LotR movie, but unfortunately it fell on a year where there were also alot of other great films, both in terms of entertainment value and critical appeal.

I'm not sure if I'm asking for punishment here, but I'm curious as to who liked Master & Commander? I thought it was absolutely terrible and a waste of $6. Even my two friends who were looking forward ot it eagerly thought it was awful. Maybe we have a sickness or something, but aside from editing/special effects/costumes, I thought it sucked. Not entertaining in the least IMHO.

darkessenz 02-29-04 11:25 PM

Just happy that Tolkien got props in the final thankyou

Erol Morris (Fog of War) came across as a real pretentious ego-minded git.

I really don't care that the Academy or the Independent Spirit Awards thought that this was the best docu film of last year, I didn't think so.

Maybe it's common in documentary directors (Michael Moore) and best actors (Penn).

I sure could go for some wings right now...oh well....

11 for 11....incredible...

I liked it a lot, especially when they got to the Galapagos Islands. I thought the pre-Darwinian stuff was great. Not the best movie of the year but deserving of its Best Picture nomination.

RyoHazuki 02-29-04 11:31 PM

My thoughts:

 to Robbins. Didn't ruin his good speech with "Um......**** you president Bush."

 Billy Crystal. He did a great job.

 to Jack Black and Will Ferrel. Very funny.

:thmbsdwn: to that Fog of War goofass. Lousy speech, came off like a total snob.

:thmbsdwn: to Jim Carrey for being an attnhor once again.

:thmbsdwn: to Sean Penn's WMD comment.

There is a parallel.

Both Vietnam and the Iraqi war are not very popular in public opinion, but were forced on us by politicians.

But that can be said about pretty much every war, except WW2.

maybe you could explain to us your statement....I thought that Sean Penn acted great. Jude Law on the other hand was acting a bit off.

Perhaps, you are unhappy with Sean Penn's political stance, no?....as I could see that you place him with Michael Moore.

it thought that it was a very wll drawn parallel. As already was pointed to you....war is not popular regardless how you look at it. Perhaps you disagree?
