The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This was an easy pick for me. One of the few recent movies where time seemed to stand still while I was watching it. Absolute film magic.

I somewhat agree about Amelie and Memento, but The Royal Tenenbaums?!?!??!?!? I'm sorry but I COMPLETELY disagree - I felt a very strong connection to the film, especially with the sense of familial bonding that happened after each of them were able to appreciate what they were each given in life.

IMO, With a Friend Like Harry is a very well-done knock-off of a Hitchcock, but it's still a fake like a Rolex sold on the streets of Bangkok.

I should probably go back and watch it again, but it didn't do a thing for me, except for the soundtrack selections (Anderson always picks great music for his films). All in all I thought it was very juvenile. I realize I'm in a small minority with that opinion, but I'm a big boy and can handle the abuse... :-)
I agree, but for some reason I couldn't think of another film released in 2001 that I liked much at all. I think AI was pretty good, though.

There were plenty of truly excellent 2001 films. In fact, my top 4 are modern classics in their own rights.

Although there were many fine films in 2001, I'm very much torn between The Royal Tenenbaums and A.I. I guess I will go with The Royal Tenenbaums, as it leaves you such a feeling of vitality. A.I. imho is a masterpiece, but it is a coldly calculating Kubrickian-Spielberg meld. Wes Andersons's films have a great grasp of humanity, so I will go with that.

Tight race so far between the three films I pretty much expected to be the tops, but not necessarily in this order:
1) Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (12 votes)
2) Memento (10)
3) Mulholland Dr (9)
4) Ghost World (4)
5) Black Hawk Down, In the Mood for Love, Royal Tennenbaums (3 each)
6 more films with 1 or 2 votes each.
Note... one vote was given for Dancer in the Dark (see this brilliant film if you haven't already!), but it was replaced with their 2nd place film, ItMfL since Dancer is from 2000.
This is still wide open... keep the votes coming!
1965 is now open here!

It's pretty much a toss-up between the 3 M's, but since I actually prefer Lost Highway to Mullholland Dr, I'm going to vote for the underdog Moulin Rouge (with Memento a close second).
