3 reasons to post:
1) Updated my list from top 11 to top 34... that's as far as I go
2) wendersfan - just go back and edit your list... my first "count" won't be at least 'til next weekend anyway.
and 3) had to counter the sig above this.

Looking through this thread I realized what a great year for movies it was!
1. Memento
2. Mulholland Drive
3. LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
4. Amelie
5. The Royal Tenenbaums
6. Ghost World
7. The Man Who Wasn't There
8. Battle Royale
9. Monsters, Inc.
10. Donnie Darko
I could put my top 5 in almost any order, since I loved them all, but I'll go with "Memento" since it inspired my to read and discuss the film more than I ever have with any other film before (and "Mulholland Drive" comes in a close second in that area also).
And grimfarrow, there you go again bragging that you've seen "Werckmeister Harmonies".
Just kidding; it sounds like a wonderful film, can't wait for the DVD!

Best films I saw in 2001 (but not necessarily released in 2001):
1. Dancer in the Dark (Lars von Trier)
2. In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-wai)
3. Tigerland (Joel Schumacher) I can't believe I loved a Schumacher movie.
4. You Can Count On Me (Kenneth Lonergan)
5. Memento (Christopher Nolan)
6. Pola X (Leos Carax)
7. The Jaundiced Eye (Nonny de la Peña)
8. With a Friend Like Harry (Dominik Moll)
9. Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (Joe Berlinger, Bruce Sinofsky)
10. Nobody Knows Anybody (Mateo Gil)
Best films released in 2001 but seen just recently:
Time Out (Laurent Cantet)
La pianiste (Micheal Haneke)
Fat Girl (Catherine Breillat)
Ichi the Killer (Miike Takashi)
Wendigo (Larry Fessenden)
Under the Moonlight (Reza Mir-Karimi)
Zipper and Tits (Shirakawa Koji)

I, too, must bow to the 13 year old, geeky D&D player inside me and go with "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" as best film of 2001.
Followed closely by "Donnie Darko," "Mulholland Drive," and "Moulin Rouge."

Your vote goes to In the Mood for Love (since DitD is of course from 2000). But please don't think I'm trying to skew anything the way I want it - after all, I didn't like ItMfL, but DitD is one of my all time favorites.

IMHO, Memento, Royal Tenenbaums, and Amelie are all three over-rated pieces of CRAP! There, I had to get that out in the open, thanks. Also, The Man Who Wasn't There sure was pretty, but pretty vapid, too.

IMO, With a Friend Like Harry is a very well-done knock-off of a Hitchcock, but it's still a fake like a Rolex sold on the streets of Bangkok.
