The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Personally, I only try to get slips / boxes on ‘keeper’ releases specific to me: Hong Kong movies (which are my big thing) and virtually all of the AGFA / Something Weird stuff that I’ve bought. For everything else, I’m fine with whatever I can get for the cheapest price, but I do understand why people go for them, especially as someone who eventually sells off of a lot of the VS and partner titles that I buy – those slip versions certainly do retain value. Sometimes shockingly so, considering how lazy and cheap a lot of their slip art often looks nowadays.
Hopefully anyone loading up in this sale doesn’t procrastinate, though. I’m seeing a number of titles that are already “temporarily” out of stock, which suggests OCN may have only made limited quantities available on a lot of stuff.

The ‘half-way’ sale is now on. Seeing some possibilities in the 60% category (personally speaking) for the first time in a while.
Some new VS titles are up as well.
NIGHTWATCH
THE MANGLER (glow in the dark)
ANYTHING THAT MOVES
THE BOYS IN THE BAND (Cinematograph)
HISAYASU SATO VOL. 4
WITHOUT APPARENT MOTIVE
Nice to see some more Shaw stuff that isn’t martial arts in KILLERS ON WHEELS. Plus that uncut (
) HUMAN LANTERNS is a pleasant surprise, despite the artwork being pretty . . . oof.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Took me a while to realize that new Delirium Home Video label is an offshoot of Charles Band’s Full Moon company. Most (all?) of their releases so far have been Jess Franco movies (ROLLS supposedly being a co-directing gig) that Full Moon distributed for years on DVD using their Dietrich prints, which I think Band owns the rights to. There were quite a few, including a selection of ten Franco discs where the spines of the cases created a ‘portrait’ of him when lined up side by side (pic below). ROLLS ROYCE BABY wasn’t one of those, but it was in the overall line, and I vaguely recall it having a few fleeting hardcore moments with Romay in it, so it makes sense that it’s on the Melusine side.
Full Moon would often steeply discount the Franco ‘bundle’ to some crazy price and I think it’s still in my watch pile a few years later, although I did grab LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN at the VS store after it sold out online. Not sure why some of these ‘sell out’ and others don’t considering so much of his stuff is kinda the same in many ways.

VS revealed some pretty awesome box packaging for the previously released VSU editions of Road House and Southern Comfort. If you dont have those releases already they would be worth buying.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
It kind of frustrates me that I couldn't order original slipcase version of The Keep when it originally went up for sale cause it immediately sold out, settled for the standard version, and now they are selling the slipcase version again. That and the rerelease of Southern Comfort makes me not want to bother picking up standard versions now.

I missed out on the original Southern Comfort slip, but I think this new one is rather dull

I am debating the Road House one. I never bought the original deluxe edition that was released with the mini-book and felt I could leave without owning that particular movie, but I definitely have a little FOMO since missing out. I never really read those mini-books anyway if it is just essays or I read it once and then never look at them again.
Tempting.

I will say that I am perfectly fine with the 88 Films release of Human Lanterns from a few years ago. I don't know if I will order any of the new titles from this sale, I might pick up a few of the sale titles, but there is nothing that I feel that I need to jump on right now.

I looked in the out of print section and it looks like the VS 4k release of Road House is going out of print. I have it already and have bought it enough times but I wonder if it will get released again by another boutique label.

It’s partner label month:
Partners Only month has arrived, and this is truly one for the books: a whopping 29 new releases that span gory horror and mind-melting thrillers; sexploitation classics from the 1960s-90s and a surreal Polish three-fer; Cannes award winners, “true” stories told in a compelling new ways, an updated fairy tale, and much, much more. Happy hunting!
ANALOG NIGHTMARES

A leather-clad, numbchuck wielding man on a mission for revenge, NINJA ZOMBIE, shot on Super 8 in Chicago, lands on Blu-ray from Bleeding Skull in all its bloody, butt-kicking glory. And, the final film from co-director Don Dohler (Night Beast), DEAD HUNT, a gory SOV slasher about a disappointed director taking revenge on his negative reviewers, comes to Blu-ray from Saturn’s Core.
HEADY THRILLS

Natasha Kermani’s clever feminist twist on the slasher LUCKY, about a woman who survives endless attacks by a faceless man, comes to Blu-ray from Shudder, and Dark Sky Films has Cody Ashford’s feature debut, DRIVE BACK, a paranoid, twisty timeloop thriller about a couple trapped together on an endless road.
ONE-OF-A-KIND HORROR

An outrageous mashup of violence and sadism from underground J-horror auteur Jun’ichi Yamamoto (Meatball Machine), VIOLATOR lands on Blu-ray from Wild Eye. And, the latest from indie auteur Alice Maio Mackay, THE SERPENT’S SKIN is a lo-fi coming-of-ager, tender romance, and bloody supernatural story—a fresh genre mashup, on Blu-ray from Dark Star.
THE NEW WESTERN

Andreas Prochaska’s THE DARK VALLEY transports the classic arc of a lone rider appearing in a troubled town—armed for retribution—to the snowy hills of Austria, on Blu-ray from Film Movement. And, another neo-Western from John Maclean (Slow West) comes to 4K + Blu-ray with TORNADO, the bloody tale of a young woman seeking samurai-sword vengeance on her father’s killers in early Britain, from IFC Films.
Don’t forget to check out everything Partner’s Only month has to offer—including new documentaries about John “Johnny Wadd” Holmes, punk band The Gits, and more!

The AGFA / Something Weird disc (Voices of Desire + Fly Now, Pay Later) is the only one that caught my eye (not shown in the post above). Still pretty fringe-y looking, but I have a soft spot for the SW bottom-feeders like that. Might get that when the store gets this batch later in the month, but the rest don’t do much for me, especially the abundant releases of movies that are fairly recent. Might cave on a couple or three in a future cheap sale, perhaps.

Re: The Official Vinegar Syndrome Thread
Thanks for posting that. I love AGFA/Something Weird stuff but over the years, I have found that I just prefer their trailer sets or compilation type stuff over the entire movie releases. You typically get all the best parts in the trailers, and a little of those movies can go a long way in a short time...even for a cult film fan like me.
, but I’m forever grateful that the late Mike Vraney of SW was able to rescue as much of it as he did back in the day. The nice thing about (many of) these AGFA discs is they often do include a trailer gallery of some kind (some substantial, others not), which this one does along with the three ‘sex horror’ shorts (which frankly should be part of a larger compilation disc just to get more of them out there).
