I thought it was unwatchable and fast forwarded it to the end about 45 minutes in.

That SteelBook is striking and if I knew before release, I probably would have gotten, but fine with regular 4K release...
I prefer the English dub. The movie gets dialog-heavy, and I spend my whole time reading the subtitles when I watch the Japanese version. It's based on a comic book that has twenty pages of end-notes.

It's a typical Hollywood dumbing-down of a foreign film. Any subtleties were sanded right off. What remained offended the fan base but wasn't interesting enough to attract a new audience.

If there were no other Ghost in the Shel material - no anime, no manga, no video games, nothing else - and somebody came up with that concept and gave us the Scarjo movie, it would be considered a groundbreaking concept.

But that’s not what happened. So what we got is an interesting attempt at an Americanized version.

I just happened to have watched it recently and I was able to enjoy it for what it was.

Don’t expect a faithful translation but just accept that it’s doing it’s own thing and you might enjoy it.

The remake is weird in that many scenes in it make a concerted effort to be a shot-for-shot copy of the original anime. If you just watched the trailer, you'd think, "Wow, they somehow found a way to 'convert' the old animated footage to live action." Yet the plot has been completely rewritten and is far dumber and less interesting.

The original is definitely better. It's also shorter at only 83 minutes, so it's not much of a time commitment to watch.

Re: GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995): 25th Anniversary 4K UHD - September 8, 2020

For anyone trying to make sense of this franchise's convoluted continuity, I've charted it out to the best of my ability as follows:

1) 1989 - Ghost in the Shell. Original manga by Shirow Masamune.
2) 1995 - Ghost in the Shell. 1st animated movie by Mamoru Oshii.
3) 2002-2003 - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. TV series reboot not directly connected to 2.
4) 2004 - Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Theatrical sequel to 2 by Mamoru Oshii. No connection to 3.
5) 2004-2005 - Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd Gig. Second season of 3. No connection to 2 or 4.
6) 2005 - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man. Condensed version of 3 comprised of scenes from the series edited into a feature-length OVA.
7) 2006 - Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd Gig - Individual Eleven. Condensed version of 5 comprised of scenes from the series edited into a feature-length OVA.
8) 2006 - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society. TV movie sequel to 3 & 5.
9) 2008 - Ghost in the Shell 2.0. "Special Edition"/remake of 2 with redone animation.
10) 2013-2015 - Ghost in the Shell: Arise. New reboot OVA series consisting of five mini-movies: Ghost Pain, Ghost Whispers, Ghost Tears, Ghost Stands Alone, and Pyrophoric Cult.
11) 2015 - Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture. Recompilation of 10 into TV episode format with some new content.
12) 2015 - Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie. Animated theatrical sequel movie to 10 & 11.
13) 2017 - Ghost in the Shell. Live action theatrical movie starring Scarlett Johansson.
14) 2020 - Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Netflix TV series. Sequel to 3, 5 & 8.

Mixed in with all of this somewhere are various books, manga follow-ups, and video games.

Yikes. My head would explode. Just interested in new 4K Combo which I’m sure has the original 1995 anime in all its glories!

That's an excellent deal. Any word of them issuing 'corrected' discs with the fixed music at the end?

Side note... This disc does not like my UHD-friendly PC drive, so, um, backing it up isn't possible for me.
edit: fixed that issue

I haven't seen anything about it. I will be surprised if they even acknowledge it.

Re: GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995): 25th Anniversary 4K UHD - September 8, 2020

Has it been mentioned before that the original US laserdisc of Ghost In The Shell (1995) had both songs available for the end credits?

The Japanese audio track had the score piece.
The English audio track had One Minute Warning.

Looking a little further at versions of this, I found this about other U.S. releases I own:

1. The original DVD had One Minute Warning on all audio tracks.

2. The 2-Disc DVD Special Edition had One Minute Warning on all audio tracks.

3. The Anchor Bay 25th Anniversary Blu-ray had One Minute Warning on the English track, and the score piece on the Japanese track.

Also, it was interesting to notice that the text screen that starts the film was in English on the 2 DVDs above, but the 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray switches to subtitling the original Japanese text. So does the new 4K/Blu-ray release.

^ IMAX "mini" poster is actually printed on 13" x 19" glossy cardstock (same artwork style as the Best Buy SteelBook). Some of these are showing on eBay already.

Ghost in the Shell Producer Confirms How Much the 1995 Anime Film Cost to Make

Mamoru Oshii's highly influential 1995 anime film Ghost in the Shell not only inspired anime going forward but also Hollywood directors, who still cite the film as one of the greatest of all time. But one aspect of the production of the film has been contested since its release, including on its own Japanese VHS cover – how much it cost to make. Luckily, a producer on the film went to Twitter to confirm the budget of the seminal film.

During a Twitter discussion on the budget of Ghost in the Shell between Japanese university professor Renato Rivera Rusca and translator ehoba, producer of the original film, producer Shigeru Watanabe jumped to confirm that the anime film had a budget of 330 million yen (around US$3 million) in 1995.

This is in direct contrast to the Japanese VHS box art for Ghost in the Shell, which claimed a 600 million yen budget, though this number likely refers to the production, advertising, and other associated costs to make it look like the film cost more to make than it actually did – this was just after the Bubble Economy burst.

Watanabe also confirmed that Patlabor 2: The Movie's production budget (not including advertising and such) was 220 million yen, less than Ghost in the Shell. The confirmation came due to Oshii being quoted in an interview in 2020 saying that Ghost in the Shell was cheaper to produce than Patlabor 2: The Movie, which evidently, was not the case. Watanabe says he has kept records from that time to pull up if needed.
