I’m one of them. The common thread is OLED + Panasonic 820 (or 420, presumably) + Dolby Vision. If I change players (including another one with DV) or disable DV, everything plays great.

Manga Ent. pretty much exists in name only. Not sure how Lionsgate handles it. Personally I'm not expecting anything. They can't top what Anchor Bay did with GitS: Stand Alone Complex BD (no acknowledgement of problems & blocked people on social media if they complained)*.

Regarding this one... Ugh. Sounds like someone will need to combine the best aspects of this new release with the best aspects of the Japanese UHD disc.

In addition to the audio and subtitle issues, the SAC Blu-rays from Anchor Bay also have a number of video problems and are missing all of the bonus features from the DVDs. The UK Blu-ray box set from Manga Ent. is better in all respects.

Right. I love SAC and even though the blu-rays have been cheap at times, I never bit because of the issues.

Ugh. I only have the compilation movies of SAC, so I'll definitely stick with DVDs to get the whole series.

Best Buy is saying my 4k set arrives tomorrow, I may leave it sealed for a while to see if I want to return it.

How was the Bluray version? I already sold off my DVD copy when I pre-ordered this.

Sadly, those DVDs have aged really poorly. The transfers (especially the first season) are heavily edge-enhanced and have lots of compression artifacts.

If you like the show, the UK Blu-ray set is worth the investment. It has both seasons, accurate subtitles, a number of bonus features, and much better video quality than either the American DVDs or Blu-rays. And honestly, it's not that expensive.

The only problem with it is, like the American Blu-rays, the video has been frame rate converted from the original 60 Hz to 24 fps, which results in some occasional visible stuttering. I don't think it's too bad, honestly. Most other anime has jerky frame rate issues anyway, so you get used to it.

As I recall, the Japanese Blu-ray set was encoded at 1080i60 to avoid this, but it has no English subtitles or audio. There was a set from South Korea, I believe, that had 1080i60 video, good English subtitles, and the English dub, which is generally held up as the best release for English speakers, but it's long out of print.

^ Thanks for all of those details! It's really too bad that there isn't a "perfect" release so to speak. I actually have the US Blu-ray set, but never got around to watching it. I may just go ahead and get the UK set from Zavvi, though I'm interested in finding out more about the last one you mentioned there, if for nothing else than knowing more about it, even if I can't get my hands on it.

My Best Buy order actually just arrived. It's a gorgeous looking steelbook, but I'm not unwrapping it yet.

I'm going to wait a bit to see if they do a fix for the discs.

The Japanese BD sets does include English audio (no English subtitles). IMO, the Korean BD sets were the best release for English speakers. Unfortunately the re-stock for the plain edition stopped sometime in 2018. It's unclear if they will do another edition with same on-disc content.

My copy arrived! I'll be opening it because, on the off chance they actually issue a replacement, there's no way they'd replacing anything but only the disc, not the entire steel book. For now, I'm ok with the known issues.

Yeah, I think I'm there too. The movie isn't embedded into my memory like other films, but I'm just glad to get an otherwise good copy.

Note that the digital copy appears to be English dub only.

I'm not generally a fan of putting slipcovers over SteelBooks, but the way the inner and outer layers of this one interact when you pull the case out is very striking. The problem it's giving me is that the protective sleeves I usually store SteelBooks in won't fit over the slipcover.

That SteelBook is striking and if I knew before release, I probably would have gotten, but fine with regular 4K release...

And how does the ScarJo movie, which I’m sure doesn’t come close, compare to anime?
