I've read lots of people on various Cult/Horror Films forums being bothered by Arrow's use of DNR.

I'm waiting on its arrival. I'm no expert on a/v presentations but I know what I like (and DNR isn't what I like). I'll report back with my thoughts whenever it arrives.

Excessive DNR seems to be an ongoing issue with this company. They should spend less time on atrocious cover art and more time on quality control. That said, I thought Vamp looked quite good, all things considered. The selection of extras was pretty nice as well - Deedee Pfeiffer is as adorable as ever - but I don't think they need to include opening and closing credits for a 25 minute featurette.

I own Arrow's BD releases of Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and City of the Living Dead. That's it, since it was around the time after City of the Living Dead came out, when I heard lots of mixed reviews on their BD's.

Excessive DNR and Brightness boosting seem to be the main complaints I hear.

Thanks!

It just arrived 20 minutes ago. Scanned through it and in my opinion it looks good. I'm an "Argentophile" so I wouldn't be satisfied with a crap transfer. It does look brightened in a few of the darker scenes but not even close to ruining it. Its mainly in the scenes that looked murky on the dvd releases. Other than that detail seemed good, skin tones and black levels seemed good too. Not perfect, but judging by this compared to the old dvd releases I don't know if perfect would actually be attainable. I'm more than satisfied and I would certainly say this is the best the film has looked on disc.

I added synopsis/specs/cover art for Rififi to the first post. Also, Ashes and Diamonds is now due 9/12.

According to Amazon, Tenebrae has been pushed back until 5/23.

Please let them not screw up the transfer on Tenebre. That package will be incredible.

Arrow Academy will be releasing The Conformist later in 2011! Also, Bicycle Thieves has been pushed back again to 4/18.

DVD Beaver on Bicycle Thieves - Yet another mixed bag from Arrow transfer-wise. The extras look very nice, however. If it drops to under 10 pounds I might pull the trigger while waiting for the Criterion upgrade.

Re: The Official Arrow Blu-ray Thread

DVD Beaver on Diabolique, which is actually Region B. Another reason to wait for the Criterion, which I'm sure will have the superior transfer.

It looks way better than those caps infer. A very solid package.

Arrow weren't happy with the encode for Tenebrae so they have increased the bitrate. They have been experimenting with the 5.1 track but it won't work because Arrow's version of the film is slightly longer than the previous Anchor Bay version. This means the audio will not synch with the picture and so is not usable. The upcoming bank holidays may make things a little difficult in terms of liaising with other companies so these revised release dates are subject to change. It's all about ensuring these releases are as good as they can possibly be, so the revised release dates are:

Tenebrae: June 13
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage: May 30

I'm fine with them pushing back Tenebre but if it looks anything like the screen grabs of The Beyond replacement I just saw... no thanks.

I suppose the fact that they've increased the bitrate can be taken as a positive sign, but as with all of the Arrow releases, I'll wait for the screenshots.

Great news! The Funhouse is one of Hooper's better films, and this looks like a super-stacked disc.

Plus five featurettes - most impressive. Let's just hope they don't go crazy with the DNR.

This being one of Hooper's better films isn't saying much considering he's only really made ONE good movie his entire career. I'm not one for snark, but I couldn't resist.

Oh, I think most of his films are terrible too - Lifeforce is entertainingly shlocky, but other than the classic TCM, Funhouse is, in my opinion, the only other worthwhile film in his oeuvre, which is why I'm pleased to see it receiving such a comprehensive HD release.

I'm in the I love Invaders From Mars (1986) camp. Though I admit, it's lonely here.
