Re: UHD release announcements
More Macross II updates, for anyone who backed it on Kickstarter:
Just a quick update to let you know how things are progressing.
The big news is that all of the HD and UHD color grading has been completed and is now going through final checks and approvals. This is the last major milestone before we begin authoring.
To give you an idea of the process, here are a few screenshots. We start with the raw 4K film transfer. Each frame is 4174x3152 pixels.
It looks faded because transfers are done using a logarithmic color space that maximizes dynamic range. This has to be scaled and cropped to UHD resolution (3840x2048, of which 2880x2048 represents the 4:3 framing of the original), and then color corrected. This gets us here.
For comparison, here's the same frame from the Japanese HD transfer.
The newer 4K transfer resulted in a slightly more vibrant result -- and this is the HD color grade -- the UHD grade (which jpeg's can't reproduce) is even nicer.
And while it's a totally unfair comparison, just to show you how far we've come (and how much your elders suffered back in the dark ages), here's the same frame from the DVD.
Finally, if you look very closely, you'll notice that our version is very slightly wider than the standard 4:3 framing. That's because when we were scaling the raw transfer, we realized we could include some extra area to the left and right without hitting the ragged edges of the raw film frames, so why not give you about 8% more Macross for your money?
We expect to finalize the subtitles in the new few weeks and proceed to authoring right after the new year.

Very cool to see both Deep Blue Sea and Don't Torture a Duckling get the UHD treatment.

I already have Macross DYRL pre-ordered. My wife and I bonded over Robotech and a bootleg VHS of DYRL way back in the day. My wife generally doesn't care for my physical media spending, but when I showed her this and the price, she was like "well, sometimes you gotta pay a little more for things you really want".
