That seems like a pretty nifty-looking model of the Franklin. (Though I'm not really a fan of the Franklin's design; thought it looked kind awkward from a design point of view).

Re: UHD release announcements

Just bought the Samsung UHD Blu-ray player and these movies. I sitting not too far away from a 65" Vizio P series (2016), these films look and sound amazing. I feel very good about making the leap into UHD, especially with HDR.

It looks like the non-Amazon-exclusive UHD release will not include 3D.

Well, a good number of them are upconverts from a 2K master, so HDR is the only real advantage for them.

While I agree upconvered titles won't look as good as native 4K titles, I have noticed a few movies I own aren't native 4K, but to me can look quite impressive and a notable differences from standard Blu rays.

But is the difference the upconversion, the better compression by HVEC, or the HDR? Does the upconversion look better than what a 4K TV itself can do with a 1080p source?

Somehow missed your reply.

I think it looks better than just upconverted SHD on a UHD TV/disc player, especially for newer movies. Blu-rays look better on my UHD Samsung player, but it can't create more pixels than what is already on the source disc. I'm sure it has something to do with better compression/bit rate or what not for UHD upconverts, but there's still more detail, if not horribly dramatic. I agree that HDR is what really separates UHD from 1080p. I bought a tv that supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10, and the color and contrast make the picture really pop when HDR is available. More titles/shows are popping up all the time.

Daredevil season 1 is now available in HDR, and watching it in DV vs plain UHD (guess my Samsung UHD won't play Netflix in HDR10 yet for me to compare which looks better, though will play HDR10 Amazon titles - beware watching tv show Mad Dogs on Amazon in HDR, it's broken or something, at least for my player) is way better, and dramatically better than SHD. So overall, titles are sharper, but HDR makes for better color and contrast imo.

If this Amazon listing is on the money, Unforgiven is coming to UHD BD soon.

Re: UHD release announcements

Looks like Warners is throwing a nice group of catalog titles our way in December:

GoodFellas
Argo
The Town
I Am Legend

All must-owns for me, except I Am Legend.

Re: UHD release announcements

Planet Earth II preorder is up at Amazon for $60. Should easily be a reference quality set.

Damn, they already have a pre-order. Yeah, since the new series was filmed in 4k, it should look spectacular.

PS, who'd release Terminator 2 on 4k in the US? Paramount or Lionsgate?

Re: UHD release announcements

I hope Warner releases 2001: A Space Odyssey late 2017 or 2018 for the 50th anniversary. Anyone know if it's been restored in 4K?

Sony's press site lists The Fifth Element as hitting UHD BD on July 11th, Close Encounters of the Third Kind arriving on September 19th, and Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula following on September 26th!

All right!

Now where are Leon, Bridge on the River Kwai, Taxi Driver, and Lawrence of Arabia?

Fast and Furious 6 and Furious 7 are both coming to UHD March 28th.

I already own them on BD, so I'm not upgrading for this.

I may get Part 8 whenever it hits UHD (after I see it this Spring of course)
