Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I knew going in that this wouldn't be the only release of the film but it's kind of lame of Disney and Abrams to announce deleted scenes becoming available online so soon after the Blu-ray release. Basically telling us that there will likely be a new edition out by the holidays.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I will rebuy The Force Awakens this Christmas if it comes with the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy as bonus features.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
 It's Star Wars. If you thought this would be the only version I have some oceanfront property on Jakku to sell you.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I specifically said in my post I knew it wouldn't be. Just that I didn't think they'd put out new potential special feature material as soon as they did.

And now that Disney is handling the releases, I wouldn't expect much after the 3D release later this year.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I watched this for the first time since seeing it in the theater.
Daisy Ridley is simply radiant in this thing. Her facial expressions.... the wonder in her eyes.... there is more "life" in 20 minutes of her being on screen than all of the PT, and TFA works for me because of it. I do think, despite Kylo Spoiler:
The science behind, and relative ease of destruction of Starkiller base is ridiculous and the biggest let down of the movie, IMO. Carrie Fisher got slammed for her performance, and while it was a bit wooden, the look on her face when she hugs han goodbye, with her head on his chest.... again, the eyes... spoke volumes to me. John Boyega looks and has the mannerisms of a black Matt Damon. Once you realize it, you can't unsee it. |
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I hope they explain what made Finn "snap" out of being a stromtrooper.

I do think, despite Kylo killing Han, that he will be redeemed somehow and be spun off into becoming "the hero". I think he's going to be the redeemed character, but have to sacrifice himself in the end for something. Starkiller was dumb. If they only had it doing one planet like the original and Alderan, I think that would had led to a little more seriousness to it. But it firing once missile style and destroying several planets was a bit too silly for me. Yeah, Fisher isn't the same cute woman as in the originals, but I liked seeing her again, despite her way more wooden performance. I definitely don't see Boyega in any way shape or form resembling a black Matt Damon. I can easily unsee that. In fact, he's the only new actor in this I see no real added value to. Maybe once we see him in the next two chapters, that'll change. This is funny, but these points are the ones my wife and I hit on after we saw the movie the first time. These and the fact that the 3D wasn't worth it, but the IMAX was. |

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I saw it 4 times in the theater, but was anxious to watch it on BluRay at home where you can really focus on everything in the movie. I have to say that I still really enjoy the movie as it moves the whole 2 hours and doesn't stop. TFA has gotten progressively better on each viewing, whereas the PT movies got progressively worse upon each viewing as they eventually became a chore to watch. I finally realized they just weren't working for me, where the opposite is happening where I love watching TFA again and again.
-I think that Daisy Ridley is the reason this was so liked by the OT fans like me. She could have easily been another Hayden or Padme where you didn't give a crap about the character, and then they would lose me for another trilogy. -The more I watch TFA, the more I love Kylo Ren. HE should have been Anakin Skywalker in the Prequels! I think Adam Driver did a good job of being whiny, being menacing, and yet you still have some sympathy for him cause he knows Rey is more powerful then he is. -I was worried about the OT big 3, but Han Solo really shined. His great one liners with Chewy were what was missing in ROTJ. So glad now they held off Luke til Episode 8 as it will be more fullfilling to get a film of just him. Sorry guys, but Carrie Fisher just didn't work for me as she just came off wooden. If you watch the documentary, even JJ admits she was very nervous cause she hasn't acted in 10 years and it shows. Hopefully she gets that spunk back for Episode 8. -Finally BB-8 is great! He could have easily been another Jar Jar and ruined the film, but he made me forget about R2 and C3PO cause he is so cool. -My ratings were Empire #1, Star Wars #2, Jedi #3 and then The Force Awakens at #4 (The Prequels don't exist to me). But right now I may put TFA over Jedi simply because the middle part of Jedi just comes to a complete halt with the Ewoks, and TFA never stops. |

Boy, so much for the "exclusive" Best Buy steelbooks. There must be at least 20 copies at the store I just went to. I can easily see those going on sale sometime in the future.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
With the blu-ray disc version being $20 and containing a digital code, is there any reason whatsoever that a sane person would buy the digital version by itself (From Vudu, Amazon, Google, etc.) for $20? Is there something I am missing?
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Some people now prefer digital only and don't care for or want a physical disc.

Well, it makes sense to people who live in smaller spaces. Which I never fully understood why in Europe and Asia, physical media sells really well, enough to release a ton of stuff we don't get here in the States. On average, housing over there is smaller than in the US.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Was a nice release. Wish the deleted scenes were more polished so someone could make their own Extended Fan Edit. Not too shabby if I do say-so me-self, chappy chaps.

Even if someone didn't want the disc at all, they could redeem the code and turn right around and sell the disc to recoup most of their costs. I get that some people may not want to take the time to do that, but it still seems silly to pay the same price for digital only.

The iOS version of Vudu and iTunes let you download it.
Now I've wasted my digital download that I could've given away to someone. |
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Using Disney Movies Anywhere let's you download the file to play offline. Not exactly an mp4 or avi file directly, but I did that recently for a flight on my tablet.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Bottom line is you need an app of some sort to play movies offline. You hardly ever get any digital download option that's an mp4 or avi. I think the Drafthouse film releases still do that.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Seems like a minor issue though, if the ultimate goal is to play a movie offline on your phone which was the original ask. Heck, I use a different media app like VLC to play movie files on my tablet anyway, same thing :p

I think your argument is not than an app is needed, but an app of not-your-choosing is needed. |

Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens:
BR Units Sold first week...2,944,417 Dollar Amount...$73,492,648 Very impressive, sure to go well over $100 million. (Only BR title for the entire year to go over $100 million?) (In one week it became the #1 BR title for the year, over 3x the dollar amount compared the #2 title) DVD sold 669,318 Units. Total Units = 3,613,735 Percentage for BR - 81% Percentage for DVD = 19% Must be the highest BR % ever. |

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
More info:
We all knew this was coming, but it doesn’t hurt our wallets any less. Disney has just announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming to 3D Blu-ray November 15. The four-disc set will include a feature commentary by J.J. Abrams and new deleted scenes. Which, honestly, are the biggest selling points. The 3D will surely look great at home (I’ve almost always had better 3D experiences at home than the theater) but it’s those new features that get me. What will Abrams say? What are the deleted scenes? The answers are probably “Not Much” and “Things not as exciting as the first release,” but it’s still intriguing. Here’s a trailer, of sorts, for the 3D version. It’s basically just a scene that’ll look great in 3D, and features my favorite non-Rey cue from John Williams’ score. The release will also come with the regular Blu-ray, DVD, digital copy (hence the four discs) and these features, copied from the press release: Audio Commentary with J.J. Abrams – Enter the mind of visionary director J.J. Abrams as he reveals the creative and complex choices made while developing the first film in the new Star Wars trilogy. Foley: A Sonic Tale – Foley artists, consisting of old pros and new talent, unite to bring the world of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” alive through the matching of sound to action. Sounds of the Resistance – Hear how the epic sound design of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” moves the Star Wars legacy forward. Deleted Scenes – View never-before-shared scenes that didn’t make the film’s final cut. Dressing the Galaxy – Costume Designer Michael Kaplan reveals how the costumes of the original Star Wars movies were re-envisioned for a new generation. The Scavenger and the Stormtrooper: A Conversation with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega – The two new stars share the thrill of working together on the adventure of a lifetime and becoming part of the Star Wars legacy. Inside the Armory – Take a fascinating tour through the design and creation of the weaponry in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” |

Do they really need to put a fucking DVD in this set?

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
Tough choice. I liked the movie a good deal but not enough to double dip (at least so soon). I'm also a new receiver away from being 3D equipped so that's not a huge seeking point just yet.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I'll pass on the 3-D release.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
The 3D nuts are probably going to gobble this up for the Holidays.
But for me who doesn't own a 3D HDTV or 3D BD player, not sure if the new content is worth a double dip, especially just for a JJ commentary. The other material doesn't sound very substantial. and how many of you would actually take the time to listen to JJ's commentary? I know many here feel commentaries are a waste of time and would rather watch a new movie from their backlog instead. |
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
And some of us love listening to them. I tend to listen to most, especially with movies I like a lot. And I have 3D, so this is an automatic buy.
|
Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens - April 5th, 2016
I just like to put on the commentary for key scenes to see how or why they did it. Can't have it on all the time. I do like that it's an option though...
