Hope the artwork posted by the OP is the blu-ray artwork

Wonder if they will release the original 90's batman films on blu-ray at the same time since the anthology set is OOP?

Please let the trilogy have a remastered TDK! -pray-

Although, given the amount of disks, it's likely the same previous releases of the first two with new disk art.

Okay what is the deal with TDK? Why does it need remastering?

Go back to any number of TDK posts here for the whole thing, but there were lots of complaints about grain, colors and the richness (or lack thereof) of the black throughout. The DVD release was even worse, and there was a widely popular conspiracy theory that Warner gave an especially shoddy DVD release just to artificially promote Blu-ray.

Also: Is it just me, or does it appear they gave the Batman Begins side of the Trilogy Digipak two disc spaces and TDKR just one?

Yup. Although, in all fairness, most WB's DVD releases were shit that year.

As for the BD, the issue was with how the non-IMAX footage was transferred.

It's not just you. But given the amount of disks shown, either you're supposed to keep the movies in reverse order or someone just plain screwed up when they created that display model.

You're right, it does look like BB has two and TDKR has one.

As for TDK, the 35mm sequences have all kinds of problems. It's always painful to watch it because the IMAX sequences look perfect.

Because Warner used the IMAX master to create a 2K/1080p master for the Blu-ray and digital releases rather than going directly from a 35mm negative like the DVD.

I've always had the stance Warner should've used seamless branching and given the customer the option:
  • Watch the entire film at 2.40:1 a la the DVD.
  • Watch the 35mm segments at 2.40:1 and the IMAX sequences at 1.78:1 a la the Blu-ray
Even with a film like TDK, the IMAX footage is under 30 minutes leaving plenty of space to house both versions of the film with ample room for great compression and audio options. However, Warner hasn't used seamless branching on Blu-ray outside of Blade Runner because they're a bunch of cheap fucks.

The other problem is that, from what I've read, IMAX releases of 35mm films tended to look like crap back then (dunno if that's changed) because of some "enhancements" they'd do to the footage. That's apparently what's reflected on the BD.

Yes, the Digital Media Remastering process. In a nutshell:

IMAX's proprietary DMR (Digital Media Remastering) process, which allows conventional films to be upconverted into IMAX format. This special digital intermediate technology allowed films shot on 35mm for conventional theatres to be shown in IMAX venues. In 2002, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and an IMAX-format re-release of the 1995 film Apollo 13, were the first official applications of the DMR process. Because of the projection limitations at the time, Apollo 13 and Attack of the Clones had to be edited down from their original length. As IMAX updated the system and expanded the size of the platters, the later DMR releases did not have this limitation; current platters allow a run time of up to 170 minutes where films could run longer in venues with digital projection.

Reviewers have generally praised the results of the DMR blowup process, which are visually and audibly superior to the same films projected in 35mm. But some filmmakers, such as producer Frank Marshall, point out that DMR blowups are not comparable to films created directly in the 70 mm 15 perf IMAX format, and that directors Ron Howard and George Lucas expected better. They note that the decline of Cinerama coincided roughly with its replacement by a simpler, cheaper, technically inferior version, and view DMR with alarm. IMAX originally reserved the phrase "the IMAX experience" for true 70 mm productions, but now allows its use on DMR productions as well.

Since The Lion King in 2003, no Hollywood studio had suggested in re-releasing and restoring classic films through the IMAX DMR process. But in August 2012, IMAX and Paramount Pictures announced a one-week exclusive re-release of Raiders of the Lost Ark on September 7, 2012, to promote the release of the Blu-Ray collection. The film, before it underwent through DMR, was already restored in a 4K digital intermediate with 7.1 surround sound from the original negative. The process for IMAX theaters, like with the complete restoration, was supervised by Steven Spielberg and sound designer Ben Burtt. "I didn’t know if the 1981 print would stand up to a full IMAX transfer, so I came expecting a sort of grainy, muddy, and overly enlarged representation of the movie I had made years ago," Spielberg said. "I was blown away by the fact that it looked better than the movie I had made years ago."

In regards to Spielberg's quote, there were a lot of negative comments regarding Raiders' IMAX presentation earlier this month in its respective thread over in Movie Talk. A lot of complaints that the film at times would appear blurry and overly compressed despite the fact the DMR presentation came from a 4K master. I never had a chance to witness it due to this month being quite hectic, but it doesn't surprise me. I've witnessed quite a few DMR processed films where edge enhancement was the norm.

I don't know, I'm just not that picky about the TDK BD. I've never found it unwatchable because of how it looked. Maybe because I like the movie so much that I am just not paying attention that much but the picture doesn't seem as bad as people make it out to be. If it gets a remaster I will definitely buy to me I've never seen the big problem with how it looks now. Is it perfect? No but it isn't to the point where I just can't watch it again.

I'm getting TDKR. There's no stopping that..but if TDK BD in the trilogy set is remastered..well fuuuuuuck. I'll glady throw down some cash for that set. Tagging along would be BB.

That has to be the laziest steelbook artwork I've ever seen. You'd think they'd go all out for the trilogy. ;)

Of course the only thing I'm really interested in is that supposed longer cut on DVD so what the hell do I know?

They did like a 30 minute version of it as a special on the CW like last month.

As a long time Batman fan, I really enjoyed it.

Interesting. Kinda looks like they may have miniaturized the already-available "Dark Knight Trilogy" book -- which is rather good -- so it can fit in the box with the foldout packaging.
