It’s funny how excited I was for this to come out and I still haven’t made the purchase. I’m kinda surprised they’ll release the standard right away. Unless of course the US version is coming out around the same time. They’ll want to capitalize as much as they can.
I’ll order the standard through Diabolik next month. All these July sales are killing me.

With these editions being openly Region Free, I’d imagine potential distributors of a U.S. edition would see sales impacted by the existence of these. I’m curious if Second Sight has the North American rights as well (?).

I was holding out for a US release, but at this point I just said screw it ordered the SS set. I can retire the old snapper case dvd and whatever company releases it in the US will not make a set as nice as this one.

Re: The Official Second Sight Blu-ray Thread

If all the rumors and stories are true, Second Sight kind of had to bend over backwards to get their hands on this from Warner Brothers. That’s pretty much the reason I’ll get their release down the road.
Supposedly someone has the rights in the US and all the delays in this coming out were because of that deal WB made with the US label. So I’m guessing an announcement is imminent unless Second Sight was able to leverage a small exclusive window for doing all the restoration work themselves.

I can’t recommend this set highly enough. It definitely ranks as one of my favorite sets ever. The extras are amazing. Wait till you see C. Thomas Howell. Looks good but barely recognizable. The audio specific commentary was great. Hearing Rutgers’ voice was thrilling. He didn’t even want to do this movie. I think John Ryder is an iconic villain.

I got the Blu-ray instead, which I likewise highly recommend (and the 4K non-box combo is only a bit pricier. Same extras, which is where the meat is. I was able to see the books outside of the box at a video store here and can do without them: the screenplay is unnecessary because the movie’s right there, and the bigger book has two interviews with Harmon and Red that seem to cover ground already in their av supplements, plus a bunch of blogger essays. It’s a nice looking set, though. I’ve been watching Howell age through his rather odd mix of mainstream TV and B-movies for a couple of decades now. Gotta give him credit: he’s not above playing shaggy-looking characters that look a lot older than his actual 57 years (in fact, in the trailer for his new DTV movie called RIDE he practically looks like a hobo).

The extras are great. Of course, Howell seems like a looney bird now. In the new interview I had no idea wtf he was saying. Long rambling 30 minute story. It really seemed like he was on something, in his speaking and gestures.

Re: The Official Second Sight Blu-ray Thread

I’ve seen things written for a while now about him possibly being a bit nuts. Not sure if that explains his latter day career options, but he’s been in some pretty dire Asylum/SyFy-grade crap that is definitely beneath his former talent, but then he’ll turn up in some TV guest spot and do a solid turn. I guess a gig’s a gig at this point. Kinda sad, too, that supplement producers occasionally let subjects ramble on like that without trimming down the results. I don’t see it often, but just enough to make me think they might be afraid of angering them even when they’re borderline incoherent.

Re: The Official Second Sight Blu-ray Thread

Considering the long road this has taken to get a proper, and of all things, a 4K release is a big deal. Let them ramble - who gives a shit. I have the non-limited set on 4K disc.

Re: The Official Second Sight Blu-ray Thread

Yeah, the C. Thomas Howell interview was wild. I don't think he was necessarily high but just excited to be there. Reflecting on what a cult classic the film is. I know he had some health issues a couple of years ago that almost killed him, so who knows if that has anything to do with his temperament.

Oh, and the 4K from SS is phenomenal.
