I'm just saying that it's a frustrating trend.

It has happened before and will happen again. Subs are almost always an afterthought for most studios.

Are you confirming that Kiki's Delivery Service has the same problem as Princess Mononoke?

Did this also affect any of Disney's prior Ghibli Blu-rays?

nope. If you play the dub and the subtitles at the same time, every other line is different.

for Kiki one way to "tell" if its subtitles or dubtitles is if the drink Kiki drinks is coffee or hot choccolate (coffee for subs)

Phil Hartman did improvise a little for the cat espeically when the cat's face isn't on screen (so there wouldn't be an issue w sync issues

PM had an adapted English language screenplay written Neil Gaiman. While interesting and valid in its own way, it doesn't constitute a substitution of a more proper translation. I'd say to send complaint e-mail, but come, Disney wouldn't be listening even if anyone did. I suppose there's the hope that the UK release will fix the issue, but it's doubtful.

In that there isn't a direct translation option, yes.

The Blu-ray's subtitles (which are the 2010 DVD's subs with a few tweaks) and the English dub are by and large the same, but there are moments throughout where the text differs from the English audio and gets closer to the raw translated script (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/kik...pt_kiki_en.txt). The 2010 DVD also does this, but a few alterations have been made since then that get the subs a little closer to the original intentions, such as properly referring to the drink Osono offers to Kiki as "coffee" instead of "hot chocolate".

Other than Nausicaa, has Disney gotten any of the Ghibli Blu-rays right? It seems that they've f***ed them all up in one way or another.

Per the blu-ray.com review, The Wind Rises has no issues with subtitles, & is in mono which apparently was the filmmakers intent. Did anyone see it in theaters & was the audio just front & center throughout?

I saw it in theaters but don't remember anything distinctive about the sound mix. I kinda think I would have noticed that.

My understanding of theatrical mono is not just the center speaker but a single channel of audio sent to all the speakers, i.e., no surround effects or panning.

Bill Hunt says he contacted Disney about the subtitle issue. He hasn't updated the issue since. I have no doubt it means that he contacted them and they said "Yup. That's right. They're dubtitles. Bye, Mr. Hunt."

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

I purchased Princess Mononoke at Costco. Even with the dubtitles, it was hard to pass. I just wish that they had Kiki and The Wind Rises.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

Just finally got around to getting Kiki and can confirm the English audio has the same problem as the last DVD. Anytime a voice gets high pitched and loud in volume it distorts a little like talking into a fan.

Thank god there's no reason to listen to that track!

Most of the Ghibli dubs are pretty good.

I agree.

I'm also still upset that they didn't include the new score on Castle in the Sky. It is far more mature and full sounding.
