Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

There are still 2 more "new" Ghibli movies that have yet to be released in the US, "Princess Kaguya" (GKIDS has the rights) and "When Marnie Was There". Disney US is taking their sweet time

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

Can Disney release either of those? I thought I read something that stated "Wind" was it other than the older titles like Porco that they have been making us wait forever for.

Could those actually be coming from the same guys that released "Poppy Hill" instead?

I hope they fix the audio problems on Kiki's english audio track. It sounds like Kiki's talking from inside a toilet bowl.

But given that they dropped the updated score on the last Castle in the Sky dvd and blu-ray I don't have much faith in them.

The Tale Of Princess Kaguya, 12/3/2014

In addition, in January, a "Isao Takahata Collection" on Blu-ray, from his debut "The Little Norse Prince" to "Princess Kaguya", but it is still not announced which titles in between will be or will not be included.

Also, for Ghibli to milk more of fans money, on 12/3 they will also release this separately:

Yup, the making-of Princess Kaguya will be sold separately...

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere in this thread but are all of these limited edition "disney vault" bullshit type releases?

No, Disney merely licenses the Studio Ghibli films. These are not considered Disney films.

I'm very surprised that the Disney banner is all over the Princess Monokee Blu ray since it's rated PG-13. It was the reason Miramax released it and not Disney when it first arrived in the states. I'm still waiting for Spirited Away. I don't want to spend 70 bucks on the Japanese Blu Ray.

Disney might've loosened up after POTC showed how profitable a PG-13 venture could be for them. Though you're right that if someone pick it up expecting a Disney movie about nature, they're in for a rude awakening. Though I suppose with Miramax gone, what label would they have used?

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

It's rare, but there have been PG13 "Disney" movies in the past.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

The Miyazaki boxset was to include the Miyazaki directed music video for "On Your Mark", had to be deleted from the set at the last minute.

Ghibli has announced that they will now send out a blu-ray or dvd of the music video on its own, for free for people who purchased the boxset.

How do you know it's region free? All of the other Studio Canal releases are Region B

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

per the main review here, Disney fucked up and did not include regular subtitles that translated accurately the dialogue like the original dvd, that the new blu is essentially dubtitles

That's disappointing, I was very close to pre-ordering that title, but I'm glad I didn't.

Re: Studio Ghibli in HD

Was the Miramax DVD also dubtiles? Still have my copy of it. Kind of disappointed that Disney put dubtitiles on the blu-ray, I might still pick it up for the the 19 min. extra of film promoting in North America.

They're the same style of dubtitles from the 2010 DVD, which is a mix of direct text from the English dub and some deviations. The subtitles also omit points where the English dub adds more elaboration in scenes.

Maybe John Lasseter convinced them it would be good to put it under their main Disney banner? Or they just decided to simply because they have so many Miyazaki films in the same style of packaging. This is very accurate though, only a few PG-13 movies ever get released under the Disney banner and this is why it was Miramax originally.

It's actually sort of strange that this is what they did for The Wind Rises on it's release...

Yes, but it didn't happen with the last release of the same film, and they already have an alternate proper set of subtitles!
