^ got that twice actually. well, turns out it was free bc Walmart made a mistake and couldn't find it and then found it twice and refunded cost bc it was trouble. even though i was totally calm. but, as long as they keep making, i will still buy. i will die with 3D and will not go to 4K until i can find something that implements the option, at least, 3D with the 4K TVs...

The hidden, unadvertised benefit of 4K screens is that they can do passive 3D without the obvious resolution loss (scan lines) that previous passive displays showed.

If they have passive 3D built in. I bought in on the last generation of LG 4K OLED screens that could do passive 3D (E6 from 2016). The higher resolution also reduces the "windowscreen" effect of alternating lines, since the lines blur together at even closer distances, for a given screen size.

Also, there's nothing wrong with a solid 4K UHD transfer of a film that never had a 3D version. But if Oldboy has to choose between keeping his 3D capable 1080p TV, and moving up to UHD but losing 3D, I can see what he sticks with 1080p 3D.

Got an email from Zavvi this morning announcing their RISE OF SKYWALKER sets, including, of course, a couple of 3D combos:

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Some great 3D on the HOBBS & SHAW import, especially during those expansive – and extremely well-designed – action sequences through city streets and in outsized secret lairs and during that ridiculous but fun island battle climax. I noticed only some minor issues in backgrounds like cement walls or pillars during a handful of static dialogue scenes, which is something I notice on a LOT of 3D presentations, but when the action scenes kick in, it's a thing of beauty. No pop-outs, which should surprise no one, but lots of depth. The 3D conversion crew listed in the credits is fairly extensive; it's a damned shame Universal only saw fit to release their work in a couple of international markets.

It’s from Germany, region-free and English friendly. You select the menu language at start-up. You mentioned troubles with German 3D discs earlier in the thread, but I can’t say I had any with this one. Alternately, there is a version from India, but perhaps that’s just the same disc with a different label? On the plus side, though, that one includes the 4K as well as the 3D and 2D discs.

Indian:

Nah, I figured it out. Got the German on Amazon UK for $25 shipped. Not bad considering 3D and import. Thanks for recommend. I figured you’d mention if any problems and didn’t think you got the hard to find UK SteelBook, but I will require at minimum 50% of cost if it sucks balls...

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Good luck with that. 😄 I’m fairly forgiving of most 3D discs, maybe moreso than some folks here. The little flaws I mentioned above on a few background walls in certain scenes (crosstalk, I assume?) could’ve just been my player or TV for all I know. Now, as for the overall film itself, well, it’s everything a F&F movie is supposed to be, for better AND for worse...

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

I’ve actually only saw the first many moons ago. Only little teeny bits of others on tv, but have no idea which is which, only know 1 or 2 didn’t have Diesel and of course now Walker. All I know is slick car chases that tops each other from one to the next in outlandish stunts. I own them all sure in one form or another, but as of yet to see...

Saw this at TIFF a couple of years ago, and likewise bought the Blu-ray. It's a unique experience as 3D movies go, especially on a big screen but obviously it didn't play much outside of fests and arthouses. That reviewer gushes a bit too much for me -- the film in concept and execution is not that original; it's just that prior variations on the theme didn't have the benefit of 3D to open up the space -- but he's not far off the mark.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

For those who missed Twilight Time's release of THE MAD MAGICIAN before it went OOP, Powerhouse Indicator is releasing it in the U.K. on March 23. Supplements are significantly different than Twilight Time's disc (although the Stooges shorts are carried over), so I might grab this in a future sale:

Limited Edition Blu-ray (UK Blu-ray premiere)

Made shortly after the box-office success of House of Wax, The Mad Magician returns Vincent Price to the world of three-dimensional horror. He plays Don Gallico, the creator of elaborate illusions for stage magicians, who seeks their fame… and will turn to murder to achieve it!

Directed by John Brahm (The Undying Monster), The Mad Magician is presented in two- and three-dimensions, and is accompanied by a pair of 3D comedy shorts by the Three Stooges.

INDICATOR LIMITED EDITION BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES
  • 2K restoration
  • 3D and 2D presentations
  • Original mono audio
  • Audio commentary with film historians Kevin Lyons and Jonathan Rigby (2020)
  • Three-Dimensional Magic (2020): appreciation of The Mad Magician and the 3D filmmaking boom of the 1950s by cinematographer Frank Passingham (Kubo and the Two Strings) and archivist Tom Vincent, presented in 3D and 2D
  • Super 8 version: cut-down home cinema presentation in anaglyphic 3D
  • Two short films starring the Three Stooges and produced by Columbia Pictures: Pardon My Backfire (1953) and Spooks! (1953), presented in 3D and 2D
  • Image gallery: on-set and promotional photography
  • Original theatrical trailer
  • New and improved English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Limited edition exclusive booklet with a new essay by Kat Ellinger, a look at the career of producer Bryan Foy, an archival interview with director John Brahm by David Del Valle, a guide to the promotional campaign of The Mad Magician, an overview of contemporary critical responses, Jeff Billington on the Three Stooges’ 3D shorts, and film credits
  • UK premiere on Blu-ray
  • Limited edition of 3,000 copies

Looks like Amazon is matching most (or all?) of those. Figures, too; I waited ages for SKYSCRAPER 3D (a film I'm not even that big a fan of, but hey 3D!) to drop to a cheap sale price with no luck, and finally gave in and purchased the UK version a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully it worked out to about the same price, but still.

Skyscraper is not a great 3D disc. I think the 4K is markedly better.

i’ll tell ya, I think this is a completely ridiculous movie, but made more fun bc of chemistry of Statham and Johnson. I mean so over the top, but in a very fun way. The 3D was ok. The action scenes in FPS style were good. Coming down the office building. The street chase that ensues. Very fun. Johnson just looks ridiculous with that body. Just hope it’s natural. But he’s damn charismatic. They both are. But Johnson exudes presence. And, I like anything Elba does. It hams it up real good as baddie. The girl reminds me of young Sienna Miller. Not bad in visuals, but def not nearly best I ever saw. Audio was stellar.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Amazon UK has a new 2/£18 sale on 3D titles. Seems to be just Marvel titles (no Disney/Star Wars as previously), but it finally includes AVENGERS ENDGAME and CAPTAIN MARVEL, plus ANT MAN 2 (which was included in the last 3D deal). I seem to recall the previous 2/£18 sale morphing into a 3/£25 sale last time, too, with an expanded selection, so the big question now is whether to wait it out for a few days . . . (My cart update showed DUMBO 3D going from £12 back to £18, so perhaps I missed a Disney 3D sale?)

I'm way behind on my 3D movies, so I added the movies you listed and added in Black Panther 3D which all were labelled with the 2/£18 sale, but it looks like the promotion only got applied once, so maybe it's once per order? Or one of the movies didn't qualify or apply correctly?
