Wouldn't that kind of honesty be nice to see.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

This news is rather disheartening. I understand that many people don't like 3D, but I've always had a lot of fun with it. I will definitely continue to collect 3D discs, but I worry how long that will last if there isn't much manufacturer support.

I think there are a couple big things that hindered the growth of home 3D. The first is all the competing formats. Do you go active or passive? And then even within those formats, there are differences. I think that has finally been addressed, but that's tough on consumers. Also, the price of the discs can be pretty ridiculous. I understand its a premium product, but the normal price for most 3D titles is ridiculous.

The lack of network content might have had some impact as well. When I first got my 3D TV, I watched the Directv 3D channel some. It had a couple decent things on there, but it was just the same programming on a loop. I don't think there were any actual movies either.

Well, here's hoping that this doesn't signal the death knell any time soon. It's making me feel like I should start buying the discs while I can.

The thing that frustrates me the most is that, with 4K sets, the technology has finally reached the point that we no longer have to make that active/passive compromise decision- with 3D-capable 4K sets, we can have the best of all worlds... and now they're pretty much going to stop making them.

I think 4K 3D is still being worked on, but we won't see those until CES 2025-2026.

I just want my 4K tv to be able to display 2K 3D, which they can do beautifully when the CEs bother to design for the feature. Waiting for 2025 is not a reasonable option for me.

But you can watch the same discs on either no matter which one you choose, and if you switch to the other your discs are still good- not like HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray.

Also, the price of the discs can be pretty ridiculous. I understand its a premium product, but the normal price for most 3D titles is ridiculous.
I have about 90% of US 3D releases and have not paid more than $20 for any of them- I just wait until they go on sale, and eventually they reach that price point. It is discouraging when often the 2D edition will be on sale for about $15, but the 3D still around $27 which often happens at Target.

The real question here is: Do the movie studios and electronics companies WANT 3D to continue to be a viable product or not? While it hasn't taken off as big as expected, it still seems like people are gradually getting into it and it still has nowhere to go but up at this point, unless the higher-ups decide to limit the availability of content and equipment. (It would have been nice to have had a good 3D cable channel and I might have even subscribed if that existed. There's a lot of 3D user-created content on YouTube though which is good when you just need "something to watch" and don't want to commit to buying a movie.)

It seems the movie studios want 3D movies to continue in movie theaters where they can charge a premium price for tickets. And if you want to see the movie again in 3D, the only option would be to see it in a theater at that premium price for tickets. The movie studios controlling the content as usual.

But in the beginning of the home 3D days, it wasn't just active or passive. It was also competing versions of those technologies. The 3D glasses for my projector won't work on my 3D TV, even though both are active systems. When there are too many options and those options aren't always compatible, you can get paralysis by analysis and people might have waited until things got more worked out.

I have also found many deals on 3D titles, but those of us hanging out in a DVD forum aren't exactly the norm. Most people don't search (or wait) for deals the way we do. I can see where someone who isn't as familiar with MSRP of discs and don't follow sales from various stores would experience sticker shock. It's not like DVD or Blu-ray that always have a sales section or bargain bin. Casual shoppers probably miss most of the deals we jump on. They just see the high sticker price.

And the ONLY reason I'll buy the Point Break remake is because it's in 3D. If it were only in 2D, I wouldn't even pay it any attention. I've been thinking that if 3D does go away, I could do without seeing a lot of new movies and just concentrate on older ones- 3D was just about the only thing that got me interested in a lot of recent movies.

I got it in the mail yesterday but haven't had a chance to check out the 3D yet. More than likely I'll watch it this weekend.

I got it too but likely won't have time to watch it for a while, got 4 others to review for here first! I bought this and Inside Out (which I also haven't watched yet, but should watch back to back) mainly to give Disney positive reinforcement for putting them out in 3D after screwing the US out of other titles!

You do realize that they haven't actually broken any recent trends by releasing these in 3D, right? These are Pixar titles. Pixar (and Marvel) titles always get 3D releases. Disney Studios hasn't had one in some time.

True, but these still have the "Disney 3D" logo on them so the average person will equate them with Disney and hopefully be mad if Zootopia or any future Disney movies don't come out on 3D disc. I also noticed the Pixar titles still have actual disc art instead of the boring plain labeling Disney and Marvel titles have been using. They should get John Lasseter to head the whole company.

If the average person cared about 3D BDs, Disney might not be so reluctant to release them. (That's not a slight by me against 3D; I think they're just uninterested in anything that's not going to move a ton of copies.)

Okay, the 3D on this is great. Like really great. A lot of what makes it great is that a lot of the atmosphere is really well done, like almost realistic. Not a whole lot of in the face stuff, but overall a very enveloping experience. Good solid Pixar 3D really. And the sound shook my house.

As for the movie? Jesus H, could Pixar could have just gone a little more sad and weird. Sad in that there's a whole lot of sad moments in the movie. Won't say any more, other than it's prevalent. Weird in that you will easily see why this was a PG movie. My 12 year old said it was "Okay. But kind of had a lot of funny parts." My 2 years old twins were totally in it when they saw it just for the colors and cute animals. And no, they saw it in 2D after.

Looks like the Disney's move is now digital. I just noticed they have The Good Dinosaur on there for purchase in 2D/3D. I went ahead and searched for 3D. Every Disney movie that's been converted is there. The only one I did not see is Ratatouille. So I guess Disney is hedging their bets on digital only. Which spells bad news for any major support of the 4k blu ray format.

Oh, and the 3D is always bundled with 2D, and the bundles are $34.99.

One thing I found interesting about redeeming The Good Dinosaur on Disney Movie Rewards is that on the Disney Movie app, all of the extras are on there, including the commentary. That's the first I've seen that before. And it's a separate option, you play the movie with commentary, not just change the audio on the main movie.

None of the equipment I have can even access 3D movies on Vudu or Netflix, and the prices of 3D movies on Vudu are too high anyways. Still cheaper to import from Europe if they're going to keep playing that game.

I'll continue to do the same, import them. I prefer physical copies, especially with 3D. But point being is that there is still a way to buy Disney 3D, it's just digital only. So they didn't fully abandon it in the US. Funny how they have done zero press about it.

Saw a tweet from Kino yesterday that they'll be releasing the 3D version of Paul Leder's A*P*E (1976), apparently in collaboration (yet again) with the 3D Film Archive. I can finally retire my old 2D DVD!

Now if they can just release everything else on this page, I'll die a happy man!

Wow, I never knew Emanuelle IV (from Cannon) was in 3D- I have it on CED videodisc, in 2D of course. I have a number of those other movies on field-sequential 3D VHS including The Chambermades, which is beyond awful and the 3D isn't even very good, but I'd still love to see it again as I can't play those tapes on any HDTV.
