Picked up Finding Dory in 3D this week. I usually find the 3D effects in computer animated films to be more impressive than in most live-action films, but I wasn't blown away by the 3D in this movie. There was some added depth and a couple of pop-out moments, but there were also several dark scenes where the 3D effects couldn't be appreciated and lots of crosstalk throughout the film.

Recently picked up Star Trek Beyond in 3D. There are so many dark scenes in the film that it's a complete waste of money to buy the BD 3D version. (Why don't director's keep that in mind when they choose to make a 3D film? Or why doesn't the studio release the BD 3D with the brightness/contrast and colors punched up?) Prior to buying it, I had read a review on another web site that mentioned how difficult it was to appreciate the added dimension, and I should have listened.

I'll actually quickly nab this one just because of the three stooges shorts. Interest has appeared to have died down for TT limited blu-rays but you never know.

I saw Star Trek Beyond in IMAX 3D and it was one of the weaker 3D presentations I've seen in a while, especially since the previous IMAX 3D release (Ghostbusters) was one of the few films that needed to be seen in IMAX 3D.
I preferred the Dolby Cinema 2D presentation of Star Trek Beyond over IMAX 3D.

Here's what a "professional" reviewer had to say on another site about Star Trek Beyond 3D:
"I found the 2D version of this 2.39:1 transfer to be much more enjoyable than the 3D. The 3D edition does include some great depth, but dims down the movie -- all the way to the point where some sections are borderline unwatchable. Just compare the opening shot on Kirk's sparkling blue eyes on both versions and you will instantly see what I'm talking about. However, it's also really evident in some of the action-heavy scenes. For instance, when Krall makes his first appearance, the 3D effects completely mess with the black levels and all of the detail seen on the standard Blu-ray. Star Trek Beyond is a pretty dark movie in the first place, so making it darker isn't a good thing. Of course, there are plenty of brighter moments in the movie where it isn't so bad, but I would recommend the 2D version for a better overall experience."

It really wasn't anything spectacular. Some added depth, a little dark, but next time I would just do 2D. Movie was a slog first hour and not much better the rest.

Cool, I'll return the 3D version and keep the 2D version then.
Also, Target has 15% off most items right now. I ordered Moana 3D for $23.55.

An interesting note the recent Savant column:
Apparently 3D archive is working on a restoration of the 1953 Rock Hudson/Donna Reed western GUN FURY for future release through Twilight Time. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045846/).
And on the SEPTEMBER STORM front, apparently American Cinematheque and 3-D Space will be re-premiering the restored film on Dec. 8, followed by a Q&A with Bob Furmanek, Eric Kurland and co-star Asher Dann. It'd be nice if they record the latter for inclusion on the Blu-ray, but I guess we'll see . . .

I just got a 3D set. LG OLED55E6P.
Anyone use www.3d-blurayrental.com ? They rent out 3D and 4K blu-rays, either per-disc or as part of an optional subscription plan.
This thread over at AVS seems positive.

I signed up for their $6.99 one-disc-at-a-time (2 per month) plan and have The Walk 3D on the way.

Never heard of it before. Be sure to give us your thoughts on the service. The Walk has very good 3D, and not just during the Walk itself.

We watched about half of The Secret Life of Pets last night and it has to be one of the best 3D discs I've seen in some time. The bright, vibrant city and landscapes really popped and the different types of fur on all of the animals gave everything a depth that you don't see too often. Highly recommended and the kids loved it as well. Looking forward to finishing it tonight.

matty, you just cost me $10.
When I saw how pretty the Steelbook (with no 3D copy, natch) was, I just decided to return the unopened 3D version to Amazon -- as an aside, what an ugly slipcover for a 3D release. But after reading what you said, I got a friend to take the set, minus only the 3D disc for $10. So for the other $10, I'll keep the 3D disc in the Steelbook and put the DVD in my wife's minivan DVD holder.

Quick question : Does the 3D version of this or any other movie ever come with a 3D Digital HD code? I saw that Vudu does have some 3D movies for sale/rent.

I received my rental of The Walk 3D Blu-ray on Tuesday, 12/6. I had requested it on Fri 12/2.
The mailer reminds me of the ones for Netflix, except they include a cardboard sleeve the disc sits in, to make it a little more durable during shipping.
Here's some pics of the mailer:
I'll probably watch the disc over the weekend.
