^Sweet!

If I remember correctly they included the 3D trailer for this on 3D Rarities.

I will buy any vintage 3D released. I loved Twilight Time's release of Man In The Dark. Very nice 3D in it.

I have Dredd and can recommend that one. Good movie. I haven't seen any of the other dirt cheap 3D titles at Best Buy. Any opinions? Any worth a view? They are cheap enough that I wouldn't mind some blind buys.

Conan had some good 3D in it. Movie isn't great, but for that price, it's worth seeing in 3D.

Too bad Lionsgate is now doing separate 3D and 2D-only editions for its movies- these cheap titles was when they were putting out only single-inventory and not charging extra for them. That was the best way to get 3D material into as many hands as possible. But considering they completely snubbed a 3D release of Step Up All In for the US, I'm just glad they're putting their other titles out in 3D at all.

So which company, excluding the bloated Twilight Time, ought to release far older retro films on 3D Blu-ray?

Two classic 3D BDs that hardly go on sale are $19.99 at Bestbuy in store and online: Dial M For Murder and House Of Wax (1953)

Gamer - another 3D movie which is crazy but I found it fun is only $4.99 but that is in store only.

Gamer is a conversion done just for Blu-Ray. I saw it on Vudu in 2D and liked it so I bought the 3D Blu-Ray. It came with a UV code for the true 2D version. Haven't checked out the 3D conversion yet.

I picked up Conan and watched it last night. That's pretty much my impression. It was at least better than I thought it would be.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

how's Top Gun in 3D? the bluray.com review made it sound like the tits and this is how it should be seen. good dimensionality?

it's funny i had the 2D version in, just as Cougar was flipping out. the Dolby True was boomin and then i read the review and was like yes!

but how is it? it still retains the fantastic 2.5 hour doc right? want to see that bad boy...

No, the 3D isn't all that great. Reminded me of Predator. A few good scenes, but otherwise a waste. Even more of a waste with Top Gun in 3D is that they remastered the picture but only used it on the 3D disc. The 2D that came along with it is the older master.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

I picked it up when Walmart had it on their $6 display. You might still be able to find it in store. I figured for that much I would give it a shot since I never picked up the original release.

We watched Winter Soldier in 3D last night. Some of the action was a little blurry in 3D, but everything else looked really good.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

I reviewed the 3D Top Gun here- it was actually better than I expected, but as a purist it still alters the original movie. The 2nd disc is the same as the stand-alone Blu-Ray so it has all the extras- but the transfer of the original 2D movie has been de-grained.

My personal review of the 3D release:

Top Gun - Popcorn fun from the 80's. Gotta mention that this has one of the most aggressive 6.1 tracks of any mid 80's movie I have heard on blu. The 3D is decent. Some really nice depth in most of the aerial scenes. The everyday scenes are nothing special. But the biggest detractor is the color of the 3D release. I compared it to the included 2D disc and the colors are way blown out on the 3D release. Not sure why or what happened there?

Movie: **** out of *****
3D: ***1/2 out of *****

The 3D is actually closer to how the 2D version was supposed to look in terms of grain and color- excessive clean-up was done on the 2D transfer.

^The colors on the 3D still look way blown out though.

I like the depth to Top Gun and it looks ok, but is it me or is it kinda dark and a little teal?

Definitely teal, and maybe a little dark. I have my brightness and contrast turned up on 3D to compensate for the darkness caused by the glasses. Next TV will be UHD with passive 3D.

Your TV doesn't automatically compensate for that? My projector does it automatically in 3D mode is nice and bright.

And I agree. When I move to a UHD projector (not anytime some), I will look for one with passive glasses. I was really surprised to read that passive was better than active after getting my new projector. I just assumed active would be better 3D. I was dumb and didn't read much about the difference before I bought my projector.

But I will say the 3D on my projector is excellent. Brightness was one of the main features that everyone praising it for when I got it.

It has separate settings in 3D mode but I've still adjusted them for the best picture. (The default settings on my TV are SO wrong all around it's scary!)

I bought mine in early 2012 when there were still adequate 3D displays in stores- one had an active and passive TV next to each other showing the same material, and the active easily won for overall picture quality- you could see scan lines on the passive which I could never tolerate. I've heard they've basically fixed that problem on UHD sets since they have more resolution to work with- my Sharp active TV has a bit too much crosstalk but that was still preferable to sacrificing overall picture quality. Might get a projector if my next residence has room for it, but I assume you also need an expensive screen for it?

Screens are a lot cheaper nowadays from what I have seen.

Or you can just do like I did and have your wall framed out and use silver screen paint or something like that. No screens to mess with then.
