The Deadly Spawn - 2/7/12
Posted this in the Announcements thread, but figured it deserved it's own thread.
From Elite's website:
I watched this during the Horror Challenge a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. Super low-budget independent filmmaking, but the creatures themselves were pretty cool, if heavily indebted to Alien. The film also had a welcome sense of humor, which is almost a necessity when making a regional, ultra-cheap flick like this. I hope this means we can expect more from the nearly-defunct Elite in the future, though the majority of their releases have been discontinued. Looks like all of the extras from the Synapse disc are included. There's an informative chapter on The Deadly Spawn in Stephen Thrower's essential Nightmare USA book.
From Elite's website:
Two campers in the New Jersey woods have their outdoor fun interrupted by the arrival of a meteorite crashing nearby. They go to investigate the crater, but are suddenly attacked and devoured by alien parasites who have hitched a ride to Earth. After finishing off the campers, the hungry space monsters head for a nearby town, where they make their domain in the basement of an old house soon begin polishing off one hapless inhabitant after another. Four young teenagers, plus one pre-teen boy, try to find a way to stop the angry space monsters before they reproduce and literally eat humanity.

Very unexpected. I enjoyed the film as well, despite the fact that it is VERY low budget and could've probably been a stronger effort with a little more $$$.
I prefer Synapse's cover.

This is a fun little flick. I haven't seen it in a couple years and for the right price I'd pick it up.
Side note: The monster in TerrorVision always reminded me of The Deadly Spawn creature bred with a Critter. Love 80s creature design.

Love this film, and am very glad it will be coming to Blu. However, I'm not expecting much picture quality improvememt over the excellent DVD, since this film was a very low budget effort shot entirely on 16 mm. So, unless it is VERY cheap, there simply won't be that much incentive for me to upgrade.

Hi. I'm the producer/owner of The Deadly Spawn. I moved the rights to Elite because Synapse was not interested in releasing it as a Blu-Ray. Don is a friend and we had a good run with it on DVD. I found a bunch more cool supp items and included them in this version. The quality is what's there. We shot on about 2 dozen different 16mm film stocks, not all top quality. Even with the modern technology it's hard to remove grain and scratches...unless you want to spend a small fortune. lol...eventually someone will make a $50 million dollar remake!

Some clarification:
Yes...as you said...“cleanup of dirt and scratches is nice, maybe even a light grain filtering”...that's exactly what's being done. Nothing too drastic. The tests I saw were nice. No, it's not soft.
