Kind of sad that some of he best material came after Roddenberry's death, and some would argue "against his vision." Not that I necessarily think so. Anyway, fantastic season with some of the best best episodes, and continued kudos to the incredible amount of work which went into these remasters for countless hours. Shame that Paramount won't put the same effort into the film series, but alas, so it goes.

Most of the 'best' Star Trek didn't come from Roddenberry. Gene's vision for Star Trek was what you got in The Cage pilot, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and the first season of TNG. Most of the good TOS stuff came from Gene Coon, most of the best movie stuff came from Harve Bennett, and most of the good TV stuff was Berman, Braga, and Michael Pillar.

Most of the best stuff from the movies came Nicholas Meyer, you mean ! Who's work Roddenberry evidently loathed.

Meyer just directed a pair of movies - Bennett came up with the story for Wrath of Khan - then turned it over to Jack Sowards to pen the screenplay. Meyer contributed to stories too, obviously, but Bennett was the idea man - particularly for Star Trek II and Star Trek III (he also co-wrote Star Trek IV). Both Shatner and Nimoy have credited him as "The Man who Saved Star Trek" over the years.

I have no doubt that he was, and without him as producer, they wouldn't have been able to make many of the risky decisions they did, but IMO Meyer deserves lots of credit too. He all-but reinvented the franchise with the naval stuff and his classy direction, rewrote Sowards script in pretty much a week for no pay, and made the most of a limited budget and directed what is pretty widely regarded as the dominant fan favorite. Don't get me wrong, if Bennet hadn't come on, he wouldn't have brought Meyer, made the budgetary decisions and production decisions he did, and he's definitely the one who moved the franchise in a commercially viable direction after they dumped Roddenberry and was probably responsible both for most of the broader strokes and many of the details as well. But IMO, Meyer set the template for pretty much every film to follow, reinvented the franchise, directed the two best films, and wrote the part of IV which everyone loves. Let's just credit them both and call it a day . And WOK still has yet to be topped, IMO.

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

Caught the tail end of a ST:TNG episode on BBCA HD. This was an SD episode, and I measured the aspect ratio, which worked out to be 1.44:1.

BBCA is airing a marathon of Season 1 episodes 7-12 on Tue 6/17 starting at 6pm ET. Their online schedule marks several as "NEW", so I'm expecting them to be the HD remasters at the proper aspect ratio of 1.33:1

I wonder why it's 1.44. That's really weird, I've never heard of that ratio before.

IMAX (film format) has a native aspect ratio of 1.44:1. I don't think that's why it's being used though.

I found a few references to the BBC using the 14:10 aspect ratio, originally for BBC News:
http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/thread...6#post-7210059
http://www.satelliteguys.us/xen/thre.../#post-2110229

There's more references though to a 14:9 (1.55:1) aspect ratio as being in use as a "compromise" ratio between 16:9 and 4:3. I don't think that ST:TNG is being broadcast in that wide an aspect ratio.

I'm guessing BBCA tried to find an aspect ratio they could zoom in to that would reduce the black bars, without eliminating too much from the top and bottom. So the 1.44:1 or 14:10 aspect ratio is what they settled on. The HD remasters are supposedly being broadcast in the full 1.33:1 pillarboxed frame though.

I think Best Buy has it listed in their ad for $57.00 or around there.

Can't read the review - can't deal with the light text on black background. It's like DigitalBits all over again.

For that matter I could copy the text into notepad to read, but mostly I just moved on.

I'm still hoping there's a Black Fri deal for all 7 sets of this.

Too bad that Target stopped doing the deals on the purchase of the season sets and movie discs. It was convenient for me to just stop in and get it from them, but I guess I'll just be ordering from Amazon again.

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

The big question is what's going to be in the inevitable complete series set that will be released after season seven comes out. I only picked up the first season of TNG, and I'm going to hold off on any more season sets for a while and see if a complete series boxed set with "exclusive" content doesn't come out.

I wouldn't be shocked at all to see a complete series come out with all seven seasons (retail copies), the five "feature" discs, and a sixth disc with exclusive bonus features.

That wouldn't surprise me if they did that but I'm not sure they will. There wasn't anything extra for the original series when they bundled them together. Not even special packaging as far as I remember, just the three sets wrapped together with an insert. The season sets for The Next Generation have been pretty loaded with extra features plus the "movie" discs having their own extras.

They could always put the "movie" extras on a bonus disc.

Not a single Best Buy in town (3 of them) or any within the search area has it. Plenty of the standalone... Guess it's off to Amazon too unless I get by a Target first.

Yeah, Paramount's history of Complete Series is just bundling the individual releases together and even for something like this they won't put any additional resources for it.

Owning only a few of the TNG DVD sets, I would be very tempted by a complete BD bundle, new features or not.

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

With the exception of the TNG: 20th Anniversary Set, all the Trek show DVD's have just been bundled together in a cardboard holder with no new extras.

I highly doubt that they will do what they did for TNG-20th for Blu ray as it just isn't as popular a format as DVD. But, who knows?

Re: Star Trek TNG remastered on its way for 2012

So I went ahead and ordered season 6 and Chain of Command.

I know these new BD sets are expensive as hell and not many here can afford to spend $60 per season and an additional $15 for the 2-part movies. But, I look at it this way, if I'm supporting the sets now, it will give CBS the incentive to produce more kickass sets like this.

Granted the people who are purchasing the TNG sets are a very niche audience. Maybe DS9 will get the same treatment in the future after TNG is finally done?
