Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

If ever 4K was going to look like a needless gimmick to sell crap to people who should really know better, it would be in the service of a Jess Franco film (even if it is one of the very few of his that borders on "good"). I'll give Severin credit, though – they've said in many of their podcasts that they have much more Franco stuff in the pipeline, and they're cranking it out. Sigh.

I noticed on FB that Severin also has an extremely limited edition – 70 copies (!) – of Al Adamson's DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN + BRAIN OF BLOOD (previously in the Adamson box) available only during a fest called Texas Frightmare Weekend. Looks like they're trying to engineer "collector's items" now, at least until they inevitably release a standalone later on.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Posted this in the Severin sale thread, but it's worth noting here as well:

Their next beast is a Ray Dennis Steckler box.

https://severinfilms.com/shop/incred...-steckler-box/

10 discs, 20 films, (including some porn stuff), 30 hours of supplements. The decent bonus material from the old Shriek Show DVDs seems to have been ported over as well (including the excellent Joe Bob Briggs commentaries)..

Kinda curious what "READING PENNSYLVANIA" is on Disc 10 (aside from being his home town). It's 237 minutes long and doesn't seem to be in his filmography.

See: the incredibly comprehensive 10-disc career spanning collection from producer/director/writer/showman/star Ray Dennis Steckler – along with noms de cinéma that included Sven Christian, Wolfgang Schmidt, Cindy Lou Sutters and Cash Flagg – “an unheralded auteur misunderstood by the mainstream and de-legitimized by a critical community unable to appreciate his genius.” (PopMatters)

See: 20 incredibly strange films scanned in 4K/2K from the best existing 35MM/16MM vault elements, sole remaining prints and video masters – including several rarely-seen, thought-lost or never-before-on-disc, plus all-new Special Features, audio commentaries, a full-color book and more that smashes the fun barrier!

See: the incredibly true story – filmed in Hallucinogenic Hypno-Vision & Terrorama! – behind one of the most incomparable, unstoppable and wildly original talents in horror, exploitation, adult film and pop culture history.

The Incredibly Strange Filmmaker Who Stopped Living And Became A Mixed-Up Legend written by Zack Carlson, co-author of Destroy All Movies!!! and Bleeding Skull: A 1990s Trash-Horror Odyssey, with contributions by Charles Devlin

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Severin just announced a couple of new titles:

ATTACK FORCE Z
In one of his earliest film roles, two-time Academy Award® winner Mel Gibson stars with Sam Neill (JURASSIC PARK) and John Phillip Law (DANGER: DIABOLIK) in the true story of Z Special Force, WWII’s top-secret Pacific commando unit: When an American fighter jet crashes on an island held by the Japanese, a five-man Z Force assault team launches a daring mission of courage, carnage and desperate jungle warfare to rescue the survivors. Chris Haywood (RAZORBACK), John Waters (BREAKER MORANT) and Sylvia Chang (the MAD MISSION series) co-star in the complete version of this 1981 Australia/Taiwan co-production directed by Ozploitation veteran Tim Burstall (ALVIN PURPLE), written by Roger Marshall (AND NOW THE SCREAMING STARTS) and edited by David Stiven (THE ROAD WARRIOR), scanned in 2K from the original negative at The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

  • Region Free
  • Run time: 94 mins

VIOLENT STREETS: THE UMBERTO LENZI/TOMAS MILIAN COLLECTION
Italian director Umberto Lenzi had recently completed a landmark string of kinky gialli with Hollywood outcast Carroll Baker. Cuban-born/Actor’s Studio-trained Tomas Milian had become one of Spaghetti Westerns’ most popular stars. But when these two notoriously mercurial talents came together for a series of shocking Poliziotteschi –reactionary crime films that reflected the political and sociocultural violence of 1970s Italy – they grabbed audiences by the throat, gunned down the conventions of the genre and changed the emotional velocity of action cinema forever. This collection presents Lenzi & Milian’s five greatest collaborations, now restored uncut and uncensored from the original negatives for the first time ever.

Disc 1: ALMOST HUMAN (1974)

Released in Italy under the title MILANO ODIA: LA POLIZIA NON-PUÒ SPARARE (MILAN HATES: THE POLICE CAN’T SHOOT), this first collaboration between director Umberto Lenzi and star Tomas Milian remains both “a degenerate treat” (Mondo Digital) and “definitive Eurocrime” (DVD Talk): When a small-time criminal (a fearless performance by Milian) kidnaps a wealthy industrialist’s daughter, he’ll trigger a depraved spree of class warfare, sexual violence, mass murder and the rage of a police commissioner (Henry Silva) determined to end the carnage. Anita Strindberg (YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM…) and Ray Lovelock (LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN) co-star in “one of the peaks of the genre” (Indiewire) written by Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) with a classic score by Ennio Morricone, now scanned uncut from the original negative.

Special Features:
  • Audio Commentary With Screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi
  • Audio Commentary With Mondo Digital's Nathaniel Thompson And Troy Howarth, Author Of Make Them Die Slowly: The Kinetic Cinema of Umberto Lenzi
  • Violent Milan – Interview With Director Umberto Lenzi
  • Milian Unleashed – Interview With Actor Tomas Milian
  • A History Of Violence – Interview With Ernesto Gastaldi
  • Italian American Gangster – Interview With Actor Henry Silva
  • Trailer
Disc Specs:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35.1
  • Audio: English Mono / Italian Mono
  • Closed Captions / English Subtitles
  • Region A
  • Run time: 99 mins
Disc 2: ALMOST HUMAN CD Soundtrack

Disc 3: SYNDICATE SADISTS (1975)

In their second collaboration – released in Italy as IL GIUSTIZIERE SFIDA LA CITTÀ (THE VIGILANTE CHALLENGES THE CITY) – Tomas Milian stars as a biker named Rambo (the actor borrowed the name from David Morrell’s 1972 novel First Blood) who avenges a friend’s murder by orchestrating a war between rival crime families. Director Umberto Lenzi and screenwriter Vincenzo Mannino (HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK) pack the running time with a barrage of beatings, shootings, kidnappings and chases that raised the bar for ‘70s EuroCrime and “put modern action flicks to shame” (DVD Drive-In). Luciano Catenacci (KILL, BABY… KILL!), Femi Benussi (BLOODY PIT OF HORROR) and Joseph Cotten (CITIZEN KANE) co-star in this “non-stop exciting thriller” (European Trash Cinema) – also released as ONE JUST MAN and RAMBO’S REVENGE – now scanned uncut from the original negative.

Special Features:
  • First Blood – Interview With Director Umberto Lenzi
  • Family Affair – Interview With Actress Ida Galli
  • Kidnapped – Interview With Actor Alessandro Cocco
  • Interview With The Fascist – Interview With Actor Bruno Di Luia
  • Trailer
Disc Specs:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35.1
  • Audio: English Mono / Italian Mono
  • Closed Captions / English Subtitles
  • Region Free
  • Run time: 93 mins
Disc 4: SYNDICATE SADISTS/BROTHERS TILL WE DIE CD Soundtrack

Disc 5: FREE HAND FOR A TOUGH COP (1976)

Following THE TOUGH ONES, this fourth collaboration between director Umberto Lenzi and star Tomas Milian – released as IL TRUCIDO E LO SPIRRO (THE CROOK AND THE COP) – introduced Milian’s iconic character of ‘Monnezza’ and served as the unacknowledged template for 48 HOURS: When a scheming convict (Milian) is sprung from prison by a hard-nosed cop (Claudio Cassinelli of WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS?), they’ll team up to hunt down Monnezza’s former crime partner (Henry Silva) who’s kidnapped a critically ill child. Robert Hundar (CUT-THROATS NINE), Nicoletta Machiavelli (NO WAY OUT) and a murderer’s row of EuroCrime’s most recognizable character actors co-star in this “classic politziottesco packed full of fun action” (Starburst) co-written by Lenzi and Dardano Sacchetti (THE BEYOND), now scanned in 2K from the original negative.

Special Features:
  • In The Asphalt Jungle – Interview With Director Umberto Lenzi
  • Tough Guy Corrado – A Look At The Career of Corrado Solari
  • The Father Of Monnezza – Interview With Screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti
  • Hand-Held Camera For A Tough Cinematographer – Interview With Cinematographer Nino Celeste
  • Making Movies – Interview With Producer Ugo Tucci
  • Extended Bank Robbery Scene Sourced From The Original Negative
  • Trailer
Disc Specs:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35.1
  • Audio: English Mono / Italian Mono
  • Closed Captions / English Subtitles
  • Region A
  • Run time: 92 mins

Disc 6: THE CYNIC, THE RAT AND THE FIST (1977)

For their penultimate collaboration, Umberto Lenzi and producer Luciano Martino (EATEN ALIVE!) brought together Tomas Milian as a cold-blooded crime boss known as ‘The Chinaman,’ John Saxon as a sadistic American mobster looking for his own piece of the action and Maurizio Merli as hot-headed rogue cop Leo Tanzi – first introduced in Lenzi’s THE TOUGH ONES – gunning for them both. Renzo Palmer (STREET LAW) and Gabriella Lepori (5 WOMEN FOR THE KILLER) co-star in this “fantastic piece of Italian genre cinema and a definitive statement to the craftsmanship of Lenzi” (Cinezilla) co-written by Lenzi, Dardano Sacchetti (THE NEW YORK RIPPER) and Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) featuring an oft-sampled score by Franco Micalizzi (DEATH PROOF, DJANGO UNCHAINED), now scanned uncut in 2K from the original negative.

Special Features:
  • Merli vs. Milian – Interview With Director Umberto Lenzi
  • A Man Of Action – Interview With Umberto Lenzi
  • Me, Milian And Merli – Interview With Umberto Lenzi on His Iconic Characters
  • The Writer, The Director And The Actor – Interview With Screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti
  • Here Comes The Fist – Interview With Actor John Saxon
  • Trailer
Disc Specs:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35.1
  • Audio: English Mono / Italian Mono
  • Closed Captions / English Subtitles
  • Region Free
  • Run time: 99 mins
Disc 7: THE CYNIC, THE RAT AND THE FIST CD Soundtrack

Disc 8: BROTHERS TILL WE DIE (1978)

For their final collaboration, Umberto Lenzi directs his own razor-sharp screenplay while Tomas Milian delivers a brilliant dual performance reprising the roles of scheming lowlife Sergio ‘Er Monnezza’ Marazzi from FREE HAND FOR A TOUGH COP as well as his twin brother, hunchbacked sociopath Vincenzo ‘Il Gobbo’ Marazzi from THE TOUGH ONES. With Milian providing his own characters’ dialogue, it’s a potent odyssey of trans prostitutes, armed robberies, double crosses, randy Albanians, angry cops, insane asylums and some of the most startling pathos and politics in the history of the genre. Isa Danieli (SWEPT AWAY), Guido Leontini (EMERGENCY SQUAD) and Solvi Stubing (STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER) co-star in the long-unseen Lenzi/Milian swansong, now scanned uncut in 2K from the original negative.

Special Features:
  • Tomas And Tomas – Interview With Director Umberto Lenzi
  • He Called Me 'The Tamer' – Interview With Editor Eugenio Alabiso
  • Music And Bullets – Interview With Composer Franco Micalizzi
  • Heart Of Rome – Interview With Composer Antonello Venditti
  • Trailer
Disc Specs:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35.1
  • Audio: English Mono / Italian Mono
  • Closed Captions / English Subtitles
  • Region Free
  • Run time: 99 mins

'We’re starting the year with a bang, namely VIOLENT STREETS — THE UMBERTO LENZI/TOMAS MILIAN COLLECTION. It’s the first of at least 5 new curated box sets we’ll be bringing over the next 12 months, including one dedicated to a legendary actor, a few to unique sub-genres, and barring any further source, production and/or legal hurdles, the ultimate BLACK EMANUELLE Box. In between there’ll be more Blu Premieres, never-before-available genre classics, rarities and restorations, several UHD upgrades, new titles from the Franco, Argento, Fulci, Deodato and Martino canons, and as always a plethora of Mid-Year and Black Friday exclusives. Some new Severin announcements this week:

ACCION MUTANTE (Alex De La Iglesias):
https://severinfilms.com/en-ca/colle...on-mutante-blu
(I've wanted to see this one since first reading about it in some horror magazine when it was new. Not sure it's ever been released on disc in North America; if it was, I missed it)

ALIEN FROM THE ABYSS (Antonio Margheriti)
https://severinfilms.com/en-ca/colle...-the-abyss-blu

EXTRA TERRESTRIAL VISITORS (Juan Piquer Simon) Blu-ray + CD set -- aka POD PEOPLE
https://severinfilms.com/en-ca/colle...l-visitors-blu
(the feature length documentary on this is very intriguing, but buying this movie to see it is a tricky decision. I cannot imagine a 'director's cut' making this piece of shit any less shitty. Only Severin would try . . .

THE COMPLETE COMIC STRIP PRESENTS … CHANNEL 4 FILMS [3-disc Blu-ray)

Daniel Roebuck

Joshua Grannell (aka Peaches Christ)

Josh Miller & Pat Casey (HEY STOP STABBING ME and the SONIC movies)

Mark Savage (PURGATORY ROAD, PAINKILLER)

Another stuffed box from Severin: THE SENSUAL WORLD OF BLACK EMANUELLE, May 30

THE SENSUAL WORLD OF BLACK EMANUELLE

She was the pleasure-seeking photojournalist – forever embodied by the exquisite Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, most frequently in collaboration with writer/director Joe D’Amato – who would uncover an increasingly lurid world of sex cults, snuff films, cannibal jungles, women’s prisons, white slavers, depraved convents and beyond to become the premier feminist icon in genre history. Now Severin Films – recently hailed by Polygon as “one of the best labels in physical media” – presents THE SENSUAL WORLD OF BLACK EMANUELLE, a landmark collection that brings together 21 BLACK EMANUELLE films, 2 adjacent titles starring EuroCult heroine Ajita Wilson, and the D’Amato documentary INFERNO ROSSO, most newly scanned, restored and on Blu-ray for the first time in America. The box set is produced by Kier-La Janisse, the creator of Severin’s award-winning 2022 release ALL THE HAUNTS BE OURS: A Compendium Of Folk Horror.

THE SENSUAL WORLD OF BLACK EMANUELLE also includes 2 soundtrack CDs curated exclusively for this collection encompassing music by composer Nico Fidenco and more, the lavishly illustrated 356-pageTHEBLACK EMANUELLE BIBLEdesigned by Luke Insect and featuring new writings by noted film historians as well as Laura Gemser’s historic 1996 Nocturno Magazine interview, and over 40 hours of Special Features that include alternate versions, audio commentaries, video essays, a documentary on Gemser’s husband/co-star Gabriele Tinti, the ‘80s Gemser workout video Looking Good, and much more.

The collection – also available as part of Severin’s THE AROUND THE WORLDBundle which features a board game, a replica of Emanuelle’s golden shell camera necklace, a magnetic dress-up set, a vintage 4x6 still from the set of DIVINE EMANUELLE, a recreation of Emanuelle’s passport and more, all packaged in a vintage replica airline bag – will be available exclusively at the Severin webstore on May 30th, with a wide release to follow this summer.

Also this month, INFERNO ROSSO: JOE D'AMATO ON THE ROAD OF EXCESS / SCANDALOUS EMANUELLE & DROWNING BY NUMBERS come to Blu-ray!

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

This is from Cannes and was going around on Twitter. It shows the films that will likely be in the Bruceploitation set.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Hoped you might’ve been wrong when you referenced the possibility of multiple sets in an earlier post, but if those eight represent only a first set, then I’m kinda disappointed. I’m sure they’ll get the royal treatment, and undoubtedly the usual group of supplement makers they’ve contracted are spread thin these days, but considering the low rewatchability factor of a lot of Brucesploitation pics (including some in that picture) I was really hoping for something more all-encompassing along the lines of their ALL THE HAUNTS box (31 films, I think?) or even the EMANUELLE set (15 films). Not fond of potentially waiting years to see how many of these they actually have access to. 🙁

This set has been moved back to 7/25. The swag-free version is on sale for $195. I don't need all the extra bs for another hundo, but in fact the 21 movies themselves are merely a bunch of bs for two-hundo, but damn I am tempted.

I’m tempted as well – especially by the all-in-one nature of it – but it’s definitely more of a sale item for me, as some of the films in it that I’ve seen don’t have much repeat value. How long I’ll have to wait for it on sale is anyone’s guess. I noticed that Severin didn’t have a mid-year sale this year, so I’m assuming that’s been cancelled going forward? I was hoping to get the Steckler box as it’s the only thing left in their catalog that I want, but I guess that’ll have to wait until the BF sale.

I've seen probably five movies in the set (I reviewed three for this site) and when you get right down to it, none of them have any replay value. Until a couple three or four years down the road when you think "that movie was so bad, I would like to see it again, I wish I still owned it!")

I am thinking of it as a long-term investment, so that when I'm 70, and I want to see Emmanuel in America again, I will know it's right there for me…

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I would love to see that Brucesploitation documentary. Not sure I would want to buy the disc or invest in a pricey set of terrible Bruce Lee knockoff movies. So I hope they put it out on demand and I'll be more than happy to pay for it.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Per Frank Djeng:

To quote ALIEN3, this is rumor control, here are the facts on Severin Films' upcoming Bruceploitation Volume 1 Blu-Ray set.

1. Yes, it's coming. Special features like interviews and commentaries are being planned and scheduled for next month. There's still hope the set will be out by April earliest. All of us have been so busy in the past 4-5 months (And three of us had surgery this month!) that we really couldn't get to the bonus features sooner.
2. The Vol.1 set will also include the ENTER THE CLONES OF BRUCE documentary and there will be a group commentary with me, co-producer Michael Worth, Director David Gregory, and cameraman Jim Kunz. The documentary will also be available as a separate Blu-Ray. It is still making the festival rounds and we hope to have a "Grand Finale" multi-cities screening for the documentary in late March/Early April before it comes out on video.
3. THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE *will* be one of the films on the Volume 1 set. If you recall, Severin actually put out an ad in a trade publication last year listing some of the films on the set, and CLONES was one of them, see below. I am not sure what the quality of the upcoming Shoreline Entertainment's release of it will be (and it will be on BD-R, not on an actual pressed Blu-Ray), but I guarantee the Severin one will be much better, with a VERY interesting audio commentary for the film.
